读后续写:
Kenneth took a deep breath and entered the classroom. He noticed that all eyes were on him as he walked in. It was quiet for a moment and he felt his face got hot. Trying to calm himself down, he knew he was supposed to introduce himself. Though his voice was shaky, Kenneth managed to tell them a little about himself. After the introduction, the class clapped and cheered warmly and they seemed happy to have him there, which was quite a surprise and comfort for Kenneth. He became a little less nervous, and he started to feel like maybe he could make friends here.
As the day went on, Kenneth found that what he had worried was unnecessary. The classes were interesting, and the teachers were helpful. During the breaks, he was surrounded by the enthusiastic classmates and they chatted about their interests and had fun together. After school, some of the students invited him to play basketball in the school gym. The day ended up with surprise. Kenneth realized that change wasn’t always bad. It was scary at first, but it had led him to new experiences and friendships. He learned that he was stronger than he thought and that he could adapt to new situations.

【原文】Well, it’s the end of the basketball season and I’d like to say a few words. Firstly, well done for your effort over the past three months. When the season began on October 1st, we were right at the bottom of the group, number 13 of 14 school teams in our area. But you trained hard, followed my game plans strictly, and most importantly, you worked together as a team. Teamwork was really the key to your success. All that effort really paid off, and we made our way up to the top of the group. We even got a place in the regional competition. Although we didn’t win the game, you should have no regrets. This game isn’t really about winning. It’s about learning the skills that will take you forward in life, such as teamwork, problem-solving and learning how to face failure and never give up. I couldn’t be prouder to be your coach.

Because of its thin atmosphere and greater distance from the Sun, Mars is much colder than Earth.(火星也有大气层,但大气层很薄,主要由二氧化碳组成。由于火星大气层稀薄,距离太阳更远,所以它比地球冷得多)”以及后文“The dust storms of Mars can grow so big that sometimes they blanket the entire planet and last for months. The poles on Mars are a lot like Antarctica, capped by ice, but much of Mars’s ice is made from carbon dioxide, not water.(火星上的沙尘暴会变得非常大,有时会覆盖整个星球,持续数月之久火星的两极很像南极洲,被冰覆盖,但火星的大部分冰是由二氧化碳而不是水构成的)”可知,本句是在说明火星上的气候,后文提到了沙尘暴,可见火星上有风,故E选项“然而,火星确实有天气,有云和风”符合语境,故选E。
4.根据后文“Since 1960, more than half of all attempted Mars missions have failed.(自1960年以来,超过一半的火星任务都失败了)”可知,后文提到很多火星任务都失败了,可见火星任务并不容易实施。故B选项“火星任务从来都不容易”符合语境,故选B。

During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
24.Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms?
A.To stand out in the crowd. B.To show love for athletes.
C.To fit in with the venues. D.To stand for their countries.
25.What do we know about Guo?
A.She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B.She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C.She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D.She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
26.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B.To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C.To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D.To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
27.How is the text mainly developed?
A.By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B.By discussing historical Olympic events.
C.By comparing different views on Olympics.
D.By sharing personal stories and experiences.

A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid—related things. In fact, I am one of them.
Child—rearing (养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of capers and a bay leaf. Then he’d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.
The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as “Mummy kiss it better,” and cured l7 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.
Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always right. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.
The mother of Bill Gates: “If you’re going to drop out of college and hang out with your nerdy friends, don’t come running to me when you find yourself penniless.” The mother of Albert Einstein: “When you grow up, you’ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W. Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme(极端的) weather events in places like the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. Besides, traditional weather forecast(预报) models in sub- Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events accurately(准确地) ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. By using both physical atmospheric processes in traditional forecasting and AI, researchers develop a first-of-its-kind new modeling approach to give more accurate rainfall forecasts.“ We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has actually been observed,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics.
According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme weather caused by climate change.
Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa had not good computational resources. The project is supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense.
The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust.
32.What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph?
A.The necessity of using the new weather forecast model.
B.The great climate changes caused by human activities.
C.The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
D.Little progress has been made in weather forecasts.
33.How does the new weather forecast model work?
A.It needs much less observational data.
B.It uses supercomputers to process data.
C.It combines AI with the traditional method.
D.It depends on AI instead of the former way.
34.What can we say about the new weather forecast model?
A.It runs easily. B.It is low- cost.
C.It doesn’t work as wished. D.It is geographically limited.
35.What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A.Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B.Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI
C.AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast in Sub- Saharan Africa
D.The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model

Mars is truly a fascinating planet for those of us here on Earth. 36 It is about half as big as Earth and is often referred to as the Red Planet because of its red surface.
The Red Planet has the largest volcano in the solar system-Olympus Mons. 37 That’s about three times the height of Mount Qomolangma.
Mars also has an atmosphere, but it is very thin and made up mostly of carbon dioxide. Because of its thin atmosphere and greater distance from the Sun, Mars is much colder than Earth. 38 The dust storms of Mars can grow so big that sometimes they blanket the entire planet and last for months. The poles on Mars are a lot like Antarctica, capped by ice, but much of Mars’s ice is made from carbon dioxide, not water.
Scientists believe that studying Mars can help answer some of the key questions about our planet Earth, or even the universe.
39 Since 1960, more than half of all attempted Mars missions have failed. The USA, Russia, the European Space Agency, and several other countries have lost many spacecraft in their quest to explore the Red Planet. Nevertheless, they will still continue their explorations. Chinese experts are confident about their plan to explore Mars, in spite of the many challenges. The first Mars unmanned spacecraft was launched from Wenchang around 2020. But it is only the beginning of deep voyages into outer space. 40
A.It is roughly 27 kilometres high.
B.Missions to Mars have never been easy.
C.Mars, however, today has no active volcanoes.
D.The temperature at the planet’s surface varies widely.
E.However, Mars does have weather, with clouds and winds.
F.China will continue to explore the mysteries of the universe.
G.It is one of the few planets that we can see with our own eyes.

Kenneth was born and raised in California. The sun, the beaches, and the friends he’d known since kindergarten were all part of his world. But at the age of 16, everything changed. His parents got new jobs in Ohio, and the family had to move there. It was a difficult decision, as it meant leaving behind everything Kenneth knew and loved.
Along with the move came a new school for Kenneth. He felt upset every time he thought about saying goodbye to his school. He was scared of the change, like the new city, the new school, and the new people he would meet. He didn’t know if he could fit in or if he would be lonely there.
After a long journey across the country, the family arrived and finally settled in Ohio. When it was time to go to his new school, Kenneth’s mind was filled with worries. What if the students were unfriendly and even cold? What if he didn’t make any friends?
The next morning, Kenneth’s parents drove him to school. His heart was beating in his chest as they pulled up to the big brick building. He hugged his mom and dad, took a deep breath, and stepped out of the car. With each step towards the school gate, his anxiety grew. He felt like he was walking into a whole new world.
Kenneth was greeted by a school secretary, who was very friendly. Seeing that Kenneth was nervous and shy, she decided to show Kenneth around the school yard first. Kenneth was led to the modern computer lab, the science lab, and the huge gym with a basketball court where Kenneth imagined trying out for the school team. As they walked around, Kenneth gradually felt the school seemed nice, starting to feel a little better.
Finally, they got to the teaching building and headed for Kenneth’s new classroom, and Kenneth’s heart started racing again. The school secretary led him to the door and gave Kenneth an encouraging smile.
