阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
After learning about these famous women, you’ll know you can do a lot for society no matter what. You don’t need to be in a specific field, time or environment to make a difference to the world in your lifetime.
Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)
Amelia Earhart was the first woman who ever flew alone across the Atlantic in 1932. She became the first woman pilot in 1935 after flying from Hawaii to California. She began her lifelong dream of flying across the world in 1937. However, her flight went missing on that trip and she was never seen again.
Helena Rubinstein (1870-1965)
Helena Rubinstein moved to Australia in 1902 without the ability to speak English. Later, she founded one of the world’s first cosmetic (化妆品) companies after mixing lanolin, which is an oil that comes from sheep’s wool, with flowers. Because of that, she became the world’s richest woman at the time.
Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003)
Katharine Hepburn was known for playing strongwilled women in her films. She won four Academy Awards for Best Actress, the most an actress has ever won. Her new dress style made wearing trousers acceptable to women, which wasn’t allowed at that time.
Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928)
Emmeline was an influential woman activist, who helped British women get the right to vote. She fought along with her husband for the rights of women all the time in the late 19th century and early 20th century. After she lost her husband, she teamed up with her three daughters and formed The Women Social and Political Union, which was best known as the suffragettes (women’s right to vote).

Ms. McIntyre, 38, worked as a published. She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay.
Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times less money than they cost. In other words, for every 100 donated, the group can pay off 10,000 in unpaid medical bills.
Unfortunately, Ms. McIntyre passed away before long. Mr. Gregory posted a message for Ms. McIntyre on her social media accounts. “If you’re reading this, I have passed away,” the post began. Then the post explained, “To celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debts and then des troy the debts.”
The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or enough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts.
Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how many millions of dollars of medical debts her efforts had paid for.
4. Why did Ms. McIntyre feel luckier than some other people?
A. The doctors eventually cured her. B. Her disease didn’t become worse.
C. She had a decent job before being ill. D. She had security about medical care.
5. How did Ms. McIntyre and her husband help others?
A. By paying for their daily debts. B. By giving away money to them.
C. By paying off their debts from treatments. D. By purchasing medical insurance for them.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The public involvement. B. The couple’s commitment.
C. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre?
A. Humorous and elegant. B. Influential and generous.
C. Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable.
C
Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes (刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl cursing (咒骂) her teachers. But back home, British people were roaring, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate. Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because Britons cruelly make fun of people they like or dislike.. and of themselves. He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”. “Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen to you’.”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every American The Office episode (集). Even if they’re not perfect, the characters “learn a lesson” for the future. But in David Brent’s office — and in lots of UK comedies — the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems true to life and so much funnier. It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show that humor may mean different things in different cultures
B. To show that American people don’t understand British people.
C. To show that Britain and America have different stereotypes.
D. To show that British humor is not funny at all.
9. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A David Brent is quite a nice guy.
B. Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.
C. Episodes in the US version often end in a boring way.
D. Episodes in the UK version often end with a hopeless note.
10. Why was Michael Scott from the US version of The Office made “slightly nicer” than the UK version’s David Brent?
A. To make the character more acceptable to American viewers
B. To agree with the American workplace environment
C. Because Ricky Gervais believes people are kind by nature.
D. Due to the requirement for a more gentle sense of humor in American comedies
11. What is the author’s opinion of comic differences?
A. They are slight differences that can be ignored.
B. They can partly show cultural differences.
C. They show stereotypes of different cultures,
D. They help people communicate with each other
D
Soon, every seat on an airplane could be a window seat! New concept designs are revealing how travelers will be able to gaze at the stars above in future airplanes. Aerospace giant Airbus is showing off its vision of next-gen cabins, which include an all-round view of clouds as you jet through them.
The Airspace Cabin Vision 2035+ concept also lets passengers tap on smart interactive windows that show travel time and let you explore your destination city. The French company also says passengers will enjoy a greater choice of meals thanks to new pre-ordering concepts. They believe that, by collecting your meal at the gate, food and packaging waste could be reduced by up to 15 percent. The company explains their ethos is “to reduce emissions at heart”.
“Right now, research shows the cabin can contribute between 10% and 20% to the aircraft’s overall environmental impact during its lifecycle,” Airbus officials write.
“Putting a focus on reducing this, Airbus brought together ten airlines and eight technology companies to feed into a vision that rethinks the way the cabin should look and feel, maintaining superior passenger comfort.”
Airbus found that one of the biggest levers (手段) in the cabin for reducing emissions is lightweight solutions. To achieve this, efforts should be focused on creating lighter “bionic designs” that will help reduce cabin weight by up to 40 percent.
“As the world shifts to a more circular (循环的) economy, we are rethinking the materials used inside the cabin so they’re able to be recycled, reused and repaired during their lifecycle. This is also a key part of the 2035+ vision,” Airbus officials explain.
“Cabin lining and components will be developed for current aircraft using new materials and a complete introduction of these will be rolled out with the next generation aircraft.”
12. What can we know about the next-gen cabins from the first two paragraphs?
A. They will be made of glasses.
B. They will shorten travel time greatly.
C. They will reduce food waste to some extent.
D. They will provide whatever food passengers want.
13. What does the underlined word “ethos” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Advice. B. Fer. C. Loss. D. Idea.
14. What can be inferred about the future materials used inside the cabin?
A. They are cheaper. B. They are more eco-friendly.
C. They are more convenient. D. They are more available.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise some new flights. B. To call on people to live a greener life.
C. To introduce new design ideas of a plane. D. To explain how to make planes smarter.

People say there seems to be so much negativity in this world, but there are good people out there and sometimes we are made aware of them when we least expect it.
My family had been planning a yard sale for several weeks. Our five-year-old son, Braxton, asked if he could set up a lemonade (柠檬水) stand during the yard sale. He wanted to make a little money and save up to buy a set of Lego bricks, which might add up to $100. “I will earn it myself!” he declared proudly. He had been talking about it almost non-stop and couldn’t wait for the day to finally arrive.
Two days ago, we put up the sign “Yard Sale” in front of the driveway, telling neighbors about the time and items. On the very day, Braxton woke up early at 6:00 am and couldn’t hide his excitement. After setting everything out for the yard sale, he made the lemonade and baked some cookies to begin his business adventure.
After about an hour or more, we had several customers, but Braxton still had not sold any lemonade. He was a little sad. Then a young woman walked up with her baby to browse the items. While making small talk, we told her about Braxton’s plan to save his money for his little dream. She then selected a couple of baby toys for just $6 and paid with a $10 bill. “Keep the change, boy!” she said gently. Braxton offered to give her the lemonade and cookies he made. He couldn’t have been happier to receive his first little bit of money for the day.
The woman left with the baby toys, the lemonade and some cookies. We didn’t give it much thought after that, but the story didn’t end there.

A. David Brent is quite a nice guy.
B. Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.
C Episodes in the US version often end in a boring way.
C. They show stereotypes of different cultures,
D. They help people communicate with each other
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. B

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But comic differences can be a window into a culture.(但喜剧差异可以成为了解一种文化的窗口)”可推知,作者认为喜剧差异在一定程度上展示了文化差异。故选B。

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Several minutes passed and the woman returned.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Holding the envelope and the bill, we were so moved.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Several minutes passed and the woman returned. “Is there anything wrong?” I thought to myself. I actually thought she was here to ask for her change back. Of course, I couldn’t have been more wrong. She was carrying an envelope this time. She handed it to us and said, “The lemonade and cookies are so delicious that I want to buy all of them. I hope you can give them away to whoever passes by your stand for me.” We thanked her and she walked away. We opened the envelope after she left and found a $100 bill in it.
Paragraph 2:
Holding the envelope and the bill, we were so moved. It was just a random act of kindness by a total stranger that would make a little five-year-old boy’s wish come true. At the same time, she delivered that kindness to other strangers by offering them lemonade and cookies for free. She obviously did not do it for praise or recognition. She just did it out of the kindness of her heart. Contrary to what some may think, the positivity in this world really does outweigh the negativity. There are good people around us doing good deeds, asking for nothing back.
