When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated but the best thing always needs waiting. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park which lies in Hawaii.
When we arrived at Haleakala National Park we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o'clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.
Nearly another one hour later “Amazing!” a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive(印象深刻的)sunrise in my life. However waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever.
Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasingly unbelievable and satisfied. So it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do it yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself.
She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derck Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derck to work during her school holidays. A day’s work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money. She says: “I’m sure I wasn’t much of a help to start with, painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills.”
Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit (存款) when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds: “I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures. So, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.”
With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over that coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around £823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. Two fifths wish to increase the value of their house. Though DIY has traditionally been seen as male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.
9. Which is closest in meaning to “a dab hand” in paragraph 1?
A. An artist. B. A winner C. An expert D. A pioneer.
10. Why did Terri’s grandfather give her £5 a day?
A. For a birthday gift. B. To encourage her to take up a hobby.
C. To support her DIY projects. D. As a treat for her work.
11. How did Terri avoid losing the deposit on the house she rented?
A. By making it look like before. B. By making furniture herself.
C. By sharing the rent with a roommate. D. By ending the rental agreement.
12. What trend in DIY does the research show?
A. It is becoming more costly. B. It is gaining popularity among females.
C. It is turning into a seasonal industry. D. It is getting more time-consuming.
D
Insects (昆虫) are very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.
Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.
But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries should have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.
Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.
13. The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show ________.
A. the high cost of food production
B. it’s quite easy for farmers to raise insects
C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers
D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects
14. The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from ________.
A. their terrible taste
B. people’s old beliefs
C. family traditions
D. eating methods
15. We can infer from David and other insect experts that ________.
A. people can make a lot of money from insects
B. insects should be better protected
C. people should eat more insects
D. it’s dangerous to eat insects
16. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Raising Insects: Feed the World
B. Eating Insects: Save the World
C. A New Way of Growing Food
D. An Unusual Cookbook

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony (讽刺)? Write it down!
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it. Don’t be crazy about taking notes. You’ll be frantic (慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework.
17. What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A. It helps you to get good marks in tests.
B. It’s a basic skill of researching a paper.
C. It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says.
D. It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
18. Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
A. To introduce the topic on note-taking.
B. To compare writing styles in different times.
C. To give an example of forming good habits.
D. To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.
19. It’s suggested in the third paragraph that ________.
A. teachers encourage their students to be active in class
B. it’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles
C. it’s not always possible to note down all information in class
D. a teacher’s style be taken into consideration when taking notes
20 The writer has the opinion that students ________.
A. must try to take correct and detailed notes in class
B. should put down only key points while listening carefully
C. must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class
D. should put down as much information as possible in class

5. When did they see the first light of the sunrise?
A. About 3 o'clock. B. About 4 o'clock.
C. Nearly 5 o'clock. D. Nearly 6 o'clock.
6. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “chilly” in paragraph two?
A. Total. B. Cold.
C. Terrible. D. Interesting.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards waiting for the sunrise?
A. Excited all the time. B. Afraid all the time.
C. Firstly excited then afraid. D. Firstly excited then impatient.
8. What does the author want to tell us by this passage?
A. Sometimes it is worthwhile to wait for the best.
B. Hawaii is a good place to enjoy the sunrise.
C. I enjoyed the most flaming sunrise in my life.
D. My friends and I took a trip to Hawaii.
C 6. B 7. D 8. A

C 10. D 11. A 12. B

C 14. B 15. C 16. B

Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
根据第四段中“But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries should have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. (但是昆虫不会很快取代肉食。首先,一些国家的人们应该改变他们对吃昆虫的看法。北美和欧洲的许多人吃很多肉,比如牛肉和猪肉。但传统上他们不吃昆虫)”可知,食用昆虫还有漫长的道路要走,主要是因为人们的旧看法。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. (例如,David George Gordon写了一本名为《吃虫食谱》的书,试图向人们展示昆虫也可以是美味的。其他昆虫专家到处告诉人们吃昆虫的好处。但他们仍有很多工作要做)”可知,我们可以从David和其他昆虫专家那里推断出人们应该多吃昆虫。故选C项。
【16题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“Insects(昆虫) are very healthy food. (昆虫是非常健康的食物)”和“Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. (吃昆虫对环境也有好处,因为它们比大型动物需要更少的土地和水)”可知,本文主要介绍了昆虫是非常健康的食物,并且吃昆虫有利于环境保护,所以“吃昆虫:拯救世界”符合文章主题。故选B项。

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board that’s good: You can copy them down.
Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework.
20. The writer has the opinion that students ________.
A must try to take correct and detailed notes in class
B. should put down only key points while listening carefully
C. must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class
D. should put down as much information as possible in class

Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)?

根据第四段中的“Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.(事实上,有些人通过听,写下一些要点,然后在课后复习材料来学习得更好。)”

故填the。
故填to。
固定短语have chance to do sth. 故填to meet。
