On Oct. 2nd, 2023, Katalin Karikó and her workmate, Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology (生理学) or Medicine. But while both scientists worked hard on the way to the huge success, Karikó had to get over greater difficulties.
Born in 1955 in Szolnok, Hungary, the researcher began her work on biological (生物学的) research in 1978. In 1985, she decided to travel abroad with her husband and daughter, and work in the US. In 1995, she had to accept low pay to keep on with her study on mRNA vaccine (疫苗). In 2013, Karikó “was laid off from Penn (宾夕法尼亚大学)”, because the university told her that her study of mRNA vaccine was not hopeful. Yet the scientist’s love for her work did not change. “When I was asked to leave, I didn’t feel sorry for myself,” she said. “You have to keep your mind on finding out what’s next.”
In the same year, Karikó travelled to Europe, along with her daughter Susan Francia, a US Olympic champion. On the trip she visited BioNTech, then a little-known German company, where she met a group of mRNA enthusiasts (爱好者). “This was the first time in my life that I didn’t have to explain that mRNA is good, because all the people who were there were believers,” she said later.
Karikó’s most important message for scientists is about enjoying their work, no matter what difficulty they meet. At Penn’s Nobel party, she said, “I wish all of you to stick to your dreams...and have fun. Do great things and don’t give up that easily.”
