What I enjoy most is seeing the migration (迁徙) of birds—they come and go every year. That makes me feel the beauty of nature,” said Liang.
Liang went on different bird watching trips in China and other countries with her friends. “In Yunnan, we saw a bird wave, wnich means different kinds of birds flying together,” Liang said. “We waited for them to land and walk in front of us. Surprisingly, we saw a kind of bird that we had been looking for for ages. To watch them closely, we tried our best not to make any sound, feeling excited.”
Another time in Paris, she saw in the newspaper that a kind of rare (稀有的) bird was active there at that time, so she rushed to see. Many people there were taking photos of that bird. Feeling excited, she also took many photos. However, when she checked the photos, she found that it was actually another kind of bird. Later, the crowd all came to know that, and everyone laughed.
“I’m happy to see that there are more and more people, old and young, becoming interested in bird watching now,” Liang said. “It’s a great way to relax ourselves, taking a step away from the busy life. What’s more, through bird watching, we get outside and are closer to nature. And through bird watching, more people get to know how well some birds are doing and which ones may need our help because of the changes of farming methods (方式) and climate (气候).” Liang said.

If you want to watch and know something about birds, you must find a good place near the bird’s nest.
Birds sit on eggs and take care of their babies from April to June. Because the baby birds are too young to leave the nest, parents often go out to look for food and come back in several minutes. So it is good to watch birds. When we watch birds, we’d better hide ourselves in a close place to the nest, and it’s better to use binoculars.
But how to make a bird’s nest? A good bird’s nest must be very fine, strong, thick and comfortable. If you want to make one, please follow these:
a)Each nest must have six boards(木板). Don’t make the boards too slippery(滑的), because birds need to hold or stand on them.
b)Dig a small hole in the front of the nest as a “door”. The “door” is big enough so birds can fly in or out easily.
c)Do remember that the rainwater can’t go into the nest.
d)One piece of the board should be easy to open.
e)Don’t forget to colour the nest.

3.If we make the nest too slippery, ________.
A.it won’t be very beautiful
B.it won’t be easy to make

Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fish and birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round while some only stay for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands and the birds can easily catch them for food. Zhalong Nature Reserve is an important living area for the rare red-crowned cranes. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world. Some of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means that there will be less and less space for wildlife.
More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space. Many of them died. The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds and they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes in their numbers. The study begins next month.
We do a bird count once a year. We are now inviting secondary school students to help. We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds. People build houses of different styles (风格). Like people, some birds also like to make their “houses” look special.
Bird nests are almost everywhere. People believe that birds made nests just for shelter (庇护所) . They protect a mother’s eggs and baby birds from the cold, wind and enemies. However, a team of scientists from the University of St Andrews in the UK looked more into bird nests. They studied white-browed sparrow weavers (白眉麻雀织布鸟) in the Kalahar Desert in Africa and found that these birds have different nest- building styles from each other.
Some of the bird families they saw made simple nests with no decorations (装饰) , Others made nests with long openings to fly into. These openings can be 10 centimeters longer than those of simpler nests. This might not seem a lot to humans but for these small birds, it’s a big difference.
More importantly, the bird families work together to build them, and each bird has its own special job. Some birds are great at collecting materials (材料) , while others are good at building.
“Once they started, everybody followed, and now they have a ... tradition (传统) ,” Mariu Tello Ramos from the team told The New York Times. Younger birds watch and try to copy the older ones. This teamwork help them learn the ways to build special nests.

B.They are simpler than the nests of other birds.
C.All of them have colorful decorations.

3.How do white-browed sparrow weaver families build their nests?
A.They work at the same time. B.They do the same job together.
C.Each bird works alone on its own nest. D.They work together but play different roles.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The styles of nests change over time.
B.Teamwork helps young birds learn from the old ones.
C.Younger birds are more important in nest building.
D.Birds make a team to help each other build nests.

Having worked in a nature reserve (保护区) for 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability—he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their saying. “I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy,” he added with a big smile.
The 52-year-old’s home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled, “In the 1970s, people were so poor. Birds were often targeted as food, so almost all the children including me in the village were good at using slingshots (弹弓).”
His life changed in 1989, when a couple hiking through the mountains visited Baihualing. They asked him to be their guide and lead them to good bird-watching spots. He said, “That was the first time I had made money from birds without killing them.”
Inspired by that, the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds. In the following ten years, more bird-watchers visited the village. The village became a popular choice for bird lovers, and most villagers have turned into bird protectors and took part in serving bird-loving tourists.
In the village, there are more than 60 “bird guides” like Hou. More than 20 guesthouses which have hosted visitors from more than 100 countries bring in a total income of 1. 5 million yuan every year. “During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day. Thanks to the birds, our life is not what it used to be any more.” Hou said, adding that he takes his 3-year-old grandson with him every day to feed birds and teaches him to love and respect them.

Every summer, about three billion birds migrate (迁徙) from North Africa to Europe and Asia. In winter, they return to Africa. As they travel from one place to another, they use the sun, stars, smells and landforms (地形) to find the way.
The migration is long and difficult, and some of the animals die during each trip. However, it is not this twice-a-year journey that poses the greatest risk for these animals. The main danger to the birds comes from hunters all over the Mediterranean (地中海地区), millions of migratory birds are killed every year. As a result, the bird population is falling.
In countries along the Mediterranean, many migratory birds are illegally (非法地) trapped or killed. Besides traps, hunters also use electronic calls to catch birds. They make bird sounds to attract the real birds. Some hunters also use nets to catch birds as they fly close to the sea. “There are no birds,” said one local man. “We walk for hours without seeing any. It’s really scary.”
Birds are in danger, and many countries are working to solve this problem. In the European Union, hunting migratory birds is illegal in some countries, while in others, it is strictly controlled—the birds can only be hunted at a certain time of year. What’s more, many nature-protection groups are making sure that laws are obeyed. This has been successful in many places. For example, Sicily, an island of Italy, was once a place where illegal bird hunting was common. Today, it has mostly eliminated (消除) bird hunting, and as a result, bird-watching is becoming popular there.
Wildlife organizations around the Mediterranean are helping to bring about change. “Hunting bans (禁令) are working,” said Martin Schneider-Jacoby, a bird scientist. “But there is still more to do. We hope to stop hunting and protect birds’ living areas all over the Mediterranean. If this can be done, the number of birds will increase. There’s a long way to go, but there is hope.”

She went off to some of the world’s most amazing natural places at once. Her trips were really hard. But Phoebe surprised her doctors and her family as she carried on travelling. Years came and went, she was still alive.

Ffh. Ffh. Ffh! It was not just the empty nest (鸟巢) of a pewee bird as Amy had found the last five days. Amy ran home through the woods.
“Mum!” she shouted. “I see birds. Two. In cave (洞穴). Beautiful!”
Mum smiled. Birds! Always birds! From the moment Amy woke up in the morning to the moment she closed her eyes at night, she thought only of birds.
Amy climbed straight to her attic room—her museum, she called it. Every shelf, every spare inch of floor, was covered with nests, bird models and natural science books. The walls were covered with pencil and crayon drawings of many different kinds of birds, all signed “Amy in the woods.”
“Are those the same birds who built the nest last year? Will they return to the cave next spring?” Amy always wondered. “I will study my cave birds. I will draw them just as they are.” Amy made up her mind.
In a week, the birds were used to her. They were busy building their nest as Amy watched and drew with her pencils. Soon the dried brown nest became a soft green bed.
Amy watched as two baby birds came out. She watched as the young birds flew for the first time. She began to feel a part of this small family.
When the days grew shorter and the autumn air began to bite, Amy knew the birds would leave soon. But would they come back? She had to know!
In bed that night, she formed a plan.
The next day, when the mother and father birds were away from the nest, she tied something to one leg of each baby bird. A week later, the birds were gone. . .
The days grew longer again. One morning. Amy heard a bird call, “Fee-bee! Fee-bee!”
She ran to the cave. Watching the way the birds flew in and out of the cave, Amy knew her friends came back. But where were last year’s babies? Did they return too? She began to search the woods near the cave, listening for their call.
Inside a little house, she found two birds building a nest. One wore a silver ring around its leg. Up the small river, under a bridge, she found two more nesting birds. And one wore a silver ring around its leg.
Amy smiled and called, “Fee-bee! Fee-bee!”

Shenzhen is an important stopping place on the East Asia-Australia migratory (迁徙的) route of winter birds. If you are a bird watching lover, here is some advice for you.
Check the sunrise and sunset and tide level
The best bird watching times are the two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset. In the late afternoon, the tide at Shenzhen Bay becomes lower. Some birds appear to find food among the mud. Most of the land birds also prefer to find food in the early morning. However, a lower tide doesn’t mean it is better for bird watching. The best tide height for watching birds is between 0.5 and 1.2 meters.
Prepare your birding tools
Binoculars (双目望眼镜) are often used for watching land birds because of its small size and light weight. A monocular telescope (单目望远镜) is often used for watching faraway birds. If you want to take photos while watching, you can simply use your cameras on your cellphones.
Have birding rules in mind
Don’t feed, catch, or run after the birds for getting nice photos. These behaviors are not good for their natural habits and health. Don’t come near their nests since some birds may be dangerous and some may leave their nests and chicks when noticing any humans.

Liang Shujie, 22, is a bird watcher from Beijing. “I fell in love with bird watching three years ago when my friend showed me the beautiful birds in the park,” Liang said. “I soon learned that you can see different kinds of birds in different seasons, and there are famous bird watching routes (路线) all over China.

1.The most important thing in watching birds is to ________.
A.look for a place near the bird’s nest
B.climb up to the trees
C.catch a bird
D.kill a bird
2.We should dig a small hole as a “door”. The “door” is big enough in order to ________.
A.watch the birds easily
B.make the birds fly in or out easily
C.open the “door” easily
D.kill them at last
3.If we make the nest too slippery, ________.

Many people do not understand the importance of the wetlands. We hope this information will help them understand and make them actively take action to protect wildlife.

Bird-watching, or “birding”, is a very popular hobby (爱好) these days, and it’s a great way of getting outside with nature (大自然). So how can you get started?
What to need
When you start, a good field guide (野外指南) will help you identify (辨认) birds, or you might want to use an app (软件) on your phone. And you will also need a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜).
Where to go
You can start bird-watching just in your garden or street or in a park. But if you want to see different kinds of birds, it is a good idea to visit a wetland (湿地). Wetlands are good places for birds because there is lots of food and water for them.
How to get started
It’s always best to look for birds in the early morning or late afternoon, because this is when they are most active (最活跃的). When you see a bird, you can make some notes about its color or shape (形状). Is it alone or in a group? What is it eating? How does it fly? Then check your field guide or app.

At the age of 50, Phoebe was told that she had cancer, with less than a year to live. Hearing the news, she decided to spend the rest of her life doing what she loved most—watching birds.
She went off to some of the world’s most amazing natural places at once. Her trips were really hard. But Phoebe surprised her doctors and her family as she carried on travelling. Years came and went, she was still alive.
Ten years later, the cancer came back. But as she continued with her trips, the cancer went away again. At the age of 61, she had seen 7, 530 kinds of birds and was named “the world’s leading bird watcher.”

Ffh. Ffh.
