When you think of a rodent (啮齿动物), you probably think of a small animal you could pick up and hold—but when it’s a rodent that can weigh as much as an adult human, it might be a little difficult to carry.
Capybaras can grow up to 1.4 metres long and 61 centimeters tall, and weigh up to 65 kilograms, making them the world’s largest rodent.
They’re native (原产于) to South America but you might see them in other parts of the world, too—including in some zoos and animal parks in many countries.
Here are some interesting facts about these rodents!
They love water
Capybaras live both in water and on land. They can stay in the water for about five minutes, and sometimes they fall asleep in it. Their bodies are built for water, too. They have feet like frogs (青蛙), and their eyes, ears and nose are on the top of their head. And this lets them keep their bodies under water while still seeing what’s around them.
Their teeth never stop growing
Like other rodents, capybaras have two long front teeth that never stop growing. They’re herbivores—meaning they only eat plants—so eating things like grass and wood helps stop their teeth growing too big for their mouths!
They’re very friendly
Capybaras are social animals, and live with other capybaras in groups of about 40. They’re also friendly with other animals. In fact, they’re sometimes called “nature’s chairs”, because it’s common (常见的) to see another animal—like a bird or a monkey—sitting on them!
14. How long can Capybaras grow up to?
A. 1.4 metres. B. 14 metres. C. 6.1 metres. D. 61 centimeters.
15. Which part of the world are capybaras native to?
A. North America. B. South Africa. C. South America. D. China.
16. According to the article, what can we know about Capybaras?
A. Their feet are like those of pandas. B. Their eyes are on the top of their head.
C. Their bodies only work well on land. D. Their teeth grow too big for their mouths.
17 Capybaras are sometimes called “nature’s chairs” because ________.
A. they like living in groups of about 40 B. only plants are their favourite food
C. they live both in water and on land D. other animals like to sit on them
C
The topic “e” person or “i” person has caught the attention of many. Are you an “e” person or “i” person? Do you know the differences? In this passage, we will talk about the differences between “e” people and “i” people. These two personality types (类型) are very different.
According to a survey (调查), “e” people are more active than “i” people. They enjoy meeting new people and going to parties. On the other hand, “i” people prefer to spend time alone or in small groups. When it comes to making friends, “e” people prefer to have a larger group of friends. But “i” people would like to be with a smaller group of people. They feel more comfortable with fewer people around.
Besides, “e” people and “i” people may have different ideas about the same way of doing things. For example, “e” people see some behaviors (行为) as polite while “i” people think of them as impolite. For example, “e” people may interrupt (打断) others in conversation, but it can make “i” people feel uncomfortable.
However, people can gradually change over time. “i” people may become more active as they practice socializing (社交) and get confidence (自信), while “e” people may become less interested in making new friends as they age and only look for a quiet “me time”.
Want to know what kind of person you are? Come to have an MBTI test now!
18. How many kinds of different personality types does the passage talk about?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
19. Which of the following is an “i” person?
A. A 28-year-old woman who makes friends quickly.
B. A 22-year-old man who enjoys meeting new people.
C. A 30-year-old woman who likes to go to big parties.
D. A 25-year-old man who prefers to spend time alone.
20. How does the writer show people’s different ideas about the same behavior in Paragraph 3?
A. By showing ideas. B. By using examples.
C. By telling stories. D. By giving numbers.
21. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. “i” people will stay the same for their whole life.
B “e” people will never be interested in quiet time.
C. Practice can help change some people’s personality.
D. It is not polite to interrupt other people’s talking.
22. In the following paragraph, the passage will introduce ________.
A. a test to know personality types B. a test to have more confidence
C. a way to change personality types D. a way to practice socializing
D
“It’s a waste (浪费) of time,” I said when my mom told me to join Madcaps, a mothers and daughters club that helps the poor. When she told me I had to volunteer (志愿服务) at a homeless shelter (收容所), I thought that things could not get worse.
We got there late and walked to the dirty homeless shelter, where we saw a lady shouting at a man.
He talked to her and then led us to the kitchen, where we ran into our five fellow (同伴) Madcaps mothers and daughters.
Then homeless people started to walk in and a little girl, around five years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I handed her a cold sandwich and she smiled to say thanks. She then walked over to her parents, who sat not far away.
As she walked away, I thought about how much I had. I go to one of the top schools in San Die- go, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She probably didn’t go to school, and that is where she sleeps and eats every day. That little girl makes me understand just how fortunate I am.
After that moment, I had a change of heart. Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting.
I have little trouble getting along with others and now I have many friends to play and talk with.
I believe that if you have an open mind about things, you can learn a lot about yourself and the people in your community. You can make new friends and understand yourself better. I believe you can make a difference just by doing something that you don’t want to do.
23. Where did the writer and her mother go to volunteer?
A. At a food bank. B. At a school. C. At a homeless shelter. D. At a hospital
24. What did the writer see when she arrived?
A. The place was clean and bright. B. The place was full of homeless people.
C. There were no other volunteer workers. D. A lady was shouting at a man.
25. What did the writer come to understand after the little girl walked away?
A. The writer felt sorry for herself. B. The writer had a comfortable life.
C. The writer wanted to help more people. D. The writer liked volunteering.
26. What does the underlined word “fortunate” mean?
A. Popular. B. Strange. C. Smart. D. Lucky.
27. The writer wrote the story to advise us to ________.
A. keep our mind open B. love our mothers C. care for little girls D. help the homeless

17. Capybaras are sometimes called “nature’s chairs” because ________.
