Passage 1
Linh Nguyen is a 14-year-old girl from Hanoi, Vietnam. She won the 2022 International Young
Eco-Hero Awards, which recognize young people 8 to 16 years old for their environmental
achievements.
Since sixth grade, Linh’s dream has been to help trees. When she was young, Linh traveled with
her family to several forests. However, when she returned to her home in the city of Hanoi, she
realized that many children there would never be able to breathe the cool forest air and would not
understand the value of forests and the need to protect forest ecosystems(生态系统).
So, with two friends, all 12 years old at the time, she developed, wrote and provided money for
the publication of the book A Piece of Forest for You. The book provides interesting information for
children about what a forest is, its trees, plants, and animals, and why its protection is important. It
received a lot of media attention, the first 2,000 copies sold out, and now the book is in its second
printing. Over 4,000 dollars in book sales was given to the Forest Plantation Fund. Linh continued to
visit schools and festivals to increase the popularity of the book.
“I hope that through the book, I can provide knowledge for young people, especially children
living in cities, so that the younger generation can understand, love and protect forests. Besides,
through the sale of books, I want to raise money to plant more trees in the forest.” Before publishing
the book, Linh was already well-known in Hanoi for calling for the head teachers of schools to not
release(放飞) balloons during opening ceremonies in order to protect the environment and wildlife.
Many schools have now been involved.

Today, many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK,
99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games. They spend almost 14 hours gaming a week. This
information tells us that the benefits and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting
stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and
trains, in restaurants and even at school.
Video games are educational too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move
their hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. What’s more,
video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like
drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also good for children to learn about
technology because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children
can download many games for free. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are
playing violent (暴力的 ) or scary (恐怖的 ) games. Second, many children spend too much time
playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much
time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades.
Finally, video games can affect children’s social skills. If children spend too much time playing video
games by themselves, they might not learn how to play with their friends.
In conclusion, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and some disadvantages.
Parents should know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people. Many customs
accompany Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened.
Before the New Year comes, Chinese people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their
homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes and all their utensils (用具). Then people begin decorating
their cleaned rooms. All the door panels will be pasted (粘贴 ) with Spring Festival couplets,
highlighting Chinese calligraphy(书法) with black characters on red paper. The content varies from
house owners’ wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of
doors and wealth will be posted on front door to ward off evil (邪恶) spirits and welcome peace.
The Chinese character “fu” (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on
paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the “reveled fu” is homophonic(谐
音)with “fu comes”, both being pronounced as ‘‘fudaole’’. What’s more, two big red lanterns can be
raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly
colored New Year paintings with auspicious (吉利的) meanings may be put on the wall.
People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat
dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd
cannot be excluded (把……排除在外), for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively “ji”, a “yu”
and a “doufu”, mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. After the dinner, the whole family will
sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast on China
Central Television Station (CCTV) is important entertainment for the Chinese both at home and

abroad. According to custom, each family will slay up to see the New Year in.
Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom on the Spring Festival. People thought the
spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, such an activity was completely or
partially forbidden in big cities once the government took security, noise and pollution factors into
consideration. As a replacement, some buy tapes with firecracker sounds to listen to, some break
little balloons to get the sound too, while others buy firecracker handicrafts to hang in the living
room.
9.When do people usually clean and decorate their houses?
10.Where do people usually put red paper-cuttings?
11.What do people usually do after dinner on Spring Festival Eve?
12.What do you think is the most important for the Spring Festival? Why?

Leonardo da Vinci was a genius (天才): wildly imaginative, passionately curious and creative
across multiple disciplines—painting, architecture, aeronautics, and engineering. However, the word
“genius” minimizes (贬低 ) him by making it seem as if he were touched by lightning. His early
biographer made this mistake: “Sometimes, in a supernatural fashion, a single person is gifted by
heaven with beauty, politeness, and talent in such abundance that seems that his every act is divine
(天赐的).”
In fact, the self-taught Leonardo’s genius was shaped by his own will and ambition (雄心). It did
not come from being the divine recipient, like Newton or Einstein. Part of what made Leonardo a
genius, what set him apart (与众不同) from people who are only smart, was creativity. His talent for
combining observation with fantasy allowed him to make unexpected leaps (飞跃) that related things
seen to things unseen.
Leonardo was also a very human genius. He made mistakes. He left a trail of unfinished projects,
flying machines that never flew, tanks that never rolled. “Tell me if ever I did a thing...” “Tell me if
anything was ever made.” His imperfect humanity makes Leonardo more accessible.
Even though we may never be able to match his talents, we can learn from him and try to be
more like him. His life offers a wealth of lessons. Seek knowledge for its own sake. Not all

knowledge needs to be useful. Sometimes it should be pursued (追求) for pure pleasure. Leonardo
did not need to know how heart valves work to paint the Mona Lisa, nor did he need to figure out
how fossils got to the top of mountains to produce Virgin of the Rocks. By allowing himself to be
driven by pure curiosity, he got to explore more horizons and see more connections. Keep a childlike
sense of wonder. At a certain point in life, most of us quit puzzling over everyday phenomena. We
might enjoy the beauty of a blue sky, but we no longer bother to wonder why it is that color.
Leonardo did. Be curious, observe things, see things unseen, respect facts, be open to mystery...We
can never learn enough from Leonardo.
13.According to the passage, what shaped Leonardo’s genius?
14.What set Leonardo apart from people who are only smart?
15.Why was Leonardo a very human genius?
16.Which of Leonardo’s qualities do you admire most? Why? ( Please give two reasons)
Passage 5
Some people say that today reading is not as important as it was.
These days we have photographs, films, radio, and television. Why read a description of
something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a novel when we can see a film? Why read
I a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?
Photography is certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of
places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书), for example, is always
better when it has good pictures. But we also need words to explain the photographs. A photograph
of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing
about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact (精确的) size
and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, colour, and maybe music. These are things
we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an

6
excellent feature film (故事片). Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story
differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some
important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper
does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains
interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to
understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a
full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read,
the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The
secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.
17.Why some people say reading is not as important as it was?
18.What can photographs give people?
19.What are the advantages of a novel over a feature film?
20.Why is reading important? What do/will you do to practice reading?

Do you like poems? What do you know about bamboo? Let’s read the poem Bamboo in the Rock
by Chinese poet Zheng Xie.

Bamboo in the Rock(By Zheng Xie)

Its toothlike root in broken rock is planted deep.

It’s strong and firm though struck and beaten without rest,
Careless of the wind from north or south; east or west.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
“Bamboo in the Rock,” is a Chinese poem by a man named Zheng Xie, often called Zheng
Banqiao. He was born in 1693. Besides being a great artist and poet, Zheng was also a government
worker during a time in China called the Qing Dynasty. He didn’t like the unfair things he saw
happening in the government, so he started making art and writing poems about things like bamboo,
which were easy to understand but had deep meanings.
His poem paints a picture of bamboo growing strong even though it’s in a tough spot, squeezed
within rocks on a mountain. No matter what difficulties the bamboo faces, like bad weather hitting it
from every side, it keeps standing up straight. The bamboo is a symbol of strength and determination
because it remains firm and doesn’t break under pressure.
The poem is full of beautiful words about nature, but it’s also there to teach us something
important just like the bamboo, people should stay strong and focused even when life is challenging.
By facing hard times, we can build our inner strength, just like the strong bamboo.
Young people can learn a lot from this poem because it shows them the importance of staying
strong and determined, even when things get tough. The poem reminds teenagers that tests and
difficulties can help them grow even stronger. It is an inspiring message for them to remain brave
during hard times and never give up, just like bamboo standing tall among the challenges.
21.What’s the name of the poem?
22.Why is the bamboo a symbol of strength and determination?
23.How can we build our inner strength, just like the strong bamboo?
24.What do you think of bamboo and why do you think so?

When Cash Daniels was given “The Conservation Kid” for his efforts to protect the environment
in 2021, he was only 12 years old. He got interested in environmental problems a few years ago,
when he found plastic on a beach. It got him thinking about the influence that plastic pollution has on
the environment, especially on rivers and oceans.
原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!

In his research, Cash found that rivers are at the heart of the problem.
According to a 2021 report from Science Advances, far more rivers than
thought—at least 1, 000 of them—are carrying large number of plastic into our
oceans. This hit close to home for Cash. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The
city sits on the Tennessee River, one of the most polluted in the world.
This information motivated(激发)Cash to take action. He made it his mission to clear litter from
public spaces and local waterways.
At first, he and his parents worked together to pick up litter near the Tennessee River. But Cash
soon realized that he would need more help.
So he organized community cleanup outings. Finally, he and other volunteers removed more
than 11, 000 pounds of litter from the river.
Cash has also teamed up with businesses to recycle aluminum cans (铝罐) . So far, he has
recycled more than 2, 000 pounds of them. The money he earns from that supports river protection
efforts.
Cash enjoys getting people, especially other kids, involved in environmental activism. He wrote
a children’s book called One Small Piece, which he has read to students in his community. In it, he
spent much time explaining the problem of pollution and how streams, rivers, and oceans are
interconnected.
In January 2022, together with his friend Ella Grace, he founded Cleanup Kids. So far, The
Cleanup Kids has had more than 50 members across the US, Canada, and Australia. The group
encourages children to pick up and recycle litter, as well as to raise awareness(意识) among young
people to understand how much human life depends on the nature. The goal for the young volunteers
is to collect 1 million pieces of litter by the end of 2022. “Kids may be a small percentage of the
population,” Cash says. “But they are 100% of the future.”
25.How old was Cash Daniels when he was given “The Conservation Kid”?
26.What did he find in his research?
27.What did he make as his mission?
28.Among Cash’s actions on environmental protection, which one touches you most? Why?

Every Sunday at 2 pm, Marisela Godinez, the owner of a Mexican restaurant in Texas, used to
fill a big bag with more than 50 liters of leftover (未食用的 ) food which is unsold from the
restaurant’s all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (自助餐). “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.
But a few months ago, Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10
customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftover food for $ 5.99 each and she sends far fewer
leftovers to the bin.
Around the country, restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of unsold food
every day. Apps that connect customers to businesses with unsold food have begun to spread. The
idea of apps like Too Good To Go is to help businesses sell unsold food at a low price rather than
throw it away. They say that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food
would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor (导致因素) to climate change.
Food production itself is a big contributor to greenhouse gas release (释放). It is responsible for
nearly a third of gas release in the world. Each step of the process—growing, harvesting, processing,
packaging, storing and preparing for food—releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other planet-warming
gases. When the food is wasted, greenhouse gas releases. In addition, once unused food reaches the
bins, it breaks down and releases more greenhouse gases.
Too Good To Go has tried to make buying unsold food a game. In the United States, customers
in 12 cities can book “surprise bags” that typically cost about $ 4 to $ 6 each on the app. The food in
the bags would have been firstly priced at about three times that amount. Then, they can pick up the
bags at a certain time window.
According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, there are at least a
few things that buyers don’t think of as “food waste”. An owner of a company which sells drinks said
he only used the app to sell discontinued products but also new-flavored drinks in hopes of attracting
new customers.
29.Who is Marisela Godinez?
30.What is the idea of apps like Too Good To Go?
31.How do customers in America buy unsold food on Too Good To Go?

Into the Deep: Ocean Exploration
Salt water covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, and yet we have spent much more time
exploring the Earth’s mountains, forests, and deserts than studying its oceans. Scientists say that we
know more about the moon than we know about our own oceans. And today, we continue to put
more effort on space exploration than on ocean exploration.
Why is it that we know so little about the oceans that surround us? Perhaps it is because, for
centuries, people thought of the ocean as just a travel network. Ocean exploration was also prevented
by the conditions below the surface. The high pressure of the water would kill an unprotected diver.
Water temperature on the ocean floor was not inviting either. Openings on the ocean floor have
temperatures as high as 123℃.
To explore below the surface of the ocean, humans needed special equipment. Early diving suits
from the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century were not very useful. One type
enclosed the diver’s body in a cylinder, making it difficult to move around. A later type of diving suit
replaced the large cylinder with a heavy metal helmet. Air from above the surface traveled through a
tube into the helmet. These early diving suits allowed people to descend (下降) fifty feet below the
ocean surface for about an hour.
In 1872, the first ship equipped for ocean exploration set out on a four-year trip around the world.
The ship had two labs, and it carried the most advanced scientific equipment of the time. Scientists
on the ship tested and gathered information of sea water. They discovered an underwater mountain
chain and more than 4,000 new species (物种). The results of this expedition encouraged interest in
exploring farther below the ocean surface.
The work of deep-sea explorers has given us a picture of life far below the surface. There is now
greater understanding of the diversity of life in the ocean. We are now more aware of the importance
of healthy oceans. Still, less than one tenth of 1% of the deep ocean has been explored. Sylvia Earle,
one of the leading experts on oceans, says, “We’re in a new century, and most of the planet has yet to
be seen.”

Passage 10
Cave (洞穴) People
Cave people lived in the time of the ice age and they were probably nomads (游牧民) . They had
no kinds of transportation, for which reason they travelled on foot.
They had to travel to gather and hunt food. Their main food was meat from hunted animals.
They probably did not waste any part of the killed animals. Not even the bones and the skins.
Some scientists believe that cave people were smart enough to store food. Put it in snow or ice, dry it
on wind or smoke it over fire. They used fire for cooking and for keeping warm.
Because people of the ice age had to travel to gather food, they had two types of homes. The first
type is some sort of shelters made from animal parts (bones, skins) or pieces of wood and branches
which could be moved and the second type is some sort of permanent (永久的) homes, which were
offered by caves and rock overhangs. Caves and overhangs were sometimes dangerous because
animals like bears lived in them.
If they wanted to catch a wild animal, they had to make tools. Their tools were not very
complicated (复杂的), made mostly of stone, some of wood and animal bones. The most important
material was stone. They sharpened it and used it as a tool.
Like nowadays ice age women had jewellery (首饰 ). It was simple, but beautiful, made of
animal bones, plants, stones or shells. Their clothes were made of animal skins and simple materials
found in nature grass.

12
Because sometimes there was not much to do around the cave, cave people probably told stories
from hunting to their children or painted.
They knew something about art. Sometimes they drew paintings showing animals, people, plants
and things that happened to them in their real life. Some of these cave paintings are still preserved
and they tell stories about the ancient past.
Cave people also had the so called prehistoric pets. We are sure about that because bones of the
ice dogs were found in several caves. Why did they have dogs? Probably in order to protect people
from wild animals and to help them perform various jobs. Dogs also helped to pull killed animals or
carry tools and equipment.
37.What was cave people’s main food?
38.How did cave people store food?
39.Where were bones of the ice dogs found?
40.What do you think of cave people? And why? Please give two reasons.
