“Yes, sir.”
When he looked at me, I saw the look on his face that always made me expect something. “Do
you know what a compromise (妥协) is?” he asked.
“Breaking the law?”
“No, an agreement. It works this way,” he said. “If you promise me to go to school, we’ll go on
reading every night as usual. Is it OK?”
“Yes sir!”

Passage 7
People have long thought that AI will soon enough take jobs with repetitive labour (重复性劳
动), such as truck drivers, cleaners, but cannot copy the creativity only human brains can produce.
Truck drivers, retail cashiers and warehouse workers would all lose their jobs to robots, they said,
while workers in creative fields like art, entertainment and media would be safe.
Well, an unexpected thing has happened recently: AI has entered the creative class.
In the past few months, AI-based image generators (图像生成器) like DALL-E 2, Midjourney
and Stable Diffusion have made it possible for anyone to create unique, hyper-realistic (超现实 )
images just by typing a few words into a text box. These apps, though new, are already surprisingly
popular. DALL-E 2, has more than 1.5 million users generating more than two million images every
day, while Midjourney has more than three million members.

It’s still too early to tell whether this new wave of apps will end up costing artists and illustrators
their jobs. What seems clear, though, is that these tools are already being put to use in creative
industries.
A few months ago, Sarah Drummond, a designer in London started using AI-generated images.
Instead of spending hours creating sketches by hand, Ms. Drummond, now types what she wants into
DALL-E 2 or Midjourney.
“All of a sudden, I can take like 15 seconds and go, ‘Woman at restaurant, black-and-white
sketch,’ and get something back that’s really professional (专业的),” she said.
Ms. Drummond added that AI image generators had limitations. They aren’t good at more
difficult sketches, for example, or creating different images with the same character. And like the
other creative artists, she said she didn’t think AI designers would replace human illustrators
completely.
“Would I use it for final output? No. I would hire someone to fully make what we wanted to
realize,” she said. “But the throwaway work that you do when you’re any kind of designer, whether
it’s visual, architectural, urban planner—you’re sketching, sketching sketching. And so this is a
sketch tool.”
19.According to the passage, AI based image generators can ________.
A.take the place of truck drivers
B.be more creative than humans
C.follow instructions to create certain images
D.create more than two million texts every day
20.What does Ms. Drummond think of AI image generators?
A.They are more convenient for creating basic drawings.
B.They will be widely used and end up costing artists their jobs.
C.They are sketch tools to realize what you want for final output.
D.They are good at creating different images with the same character.
21.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To compare different AI image generators.
B.To explain howAI image generators work.
C.To encourage people to use AI for art work.
D.To show howAI is affecting creative fields.
Passage 8
We’ve been told by parents and teachers since we were kids that “It’s good to share.” Taking it
as an object of study, psychologists (心理学家 ) have published various papers stating that the
behaviour of sharing is beneficial to setting up positive emotional connecting.
Today, the action of sharing takes on more meaning. We are using technology to reduce the

money that we spend on goods and services, or to make money out of those that we don’t use all the
time. These differ from car shares to home shares, and even to pet shares. It is creating new ways of
thinking and is providing services to people when and where they want them.
This sharing economy (经济) is an answer to our increasing need for quality goods and services
at competitive prices, all delivered at a click. Whether it’s an online shop where we can get designer
clothes at rock-bottom prices (租) out our flats for a couple of days, it’s out there. Whether we’re a
lender or a borrower; everyone makes or saves money. We also make connections and sometimes
even make new friends. What’s more, sharing encourages us to reuse things, there by cutting down
on waste.
But the sharing economy is not without its problems as it’s developing faster than ongoing
supervision. Some companies are taking unfair advantage of this situation to increase their share of
the market. In addition, the sharing economy is open to misuse of trust. Some people have
experienced loss of things while renting out their homes, and others have found themselves being
stolen or attacked while sharing rides. Finally, the heart of the sharing economy, is not yet safe.
Sharing websites collect personal information about almost every part of our lives, locations, bank
information, the technology to prevent such information from being stolen still needs improvement,
and the awareness of possible risks is low among both service providers and users.
Even though, what is in no doubt is that the sharing economy is increasingly related to our daily
lives. It is growing at such a speed that we can only imagine what it will include in the future. What
will we be sharing next? Who will be sharing and how? And the most interesting question of
all—what type of society will all this sharing take us to?
22.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Online shops are the products of sharing economy.
B.Both service providers and users think highly of risks.
C.Sharing economy encourages lending and borrowing less.
D.Sharing economy offers good services with reasonable prices.
23.The words “ongoing supervision” in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to ________.
A.final judgement B.fair treatment
C.continuous management D.powerful argument
24.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.there are more possible risks of sharing than benefits
B.sharing economy will develop widely in different fields
C.it will be a popular way to make friends through sharing
D.sharing economy will bring positive emotional connecting

Passage 9
On a boat near Costa Rica, a team of scientists is helping a turtle(海龟). The animal is having
trouble breathing, and the team discovers why there is something inside its nose. A scientist tries to
get it out, but the turtle cries in pain. Finally, after eight long minutes, a
long object is pulled out. It is a 10-centimeter plastic straw(吸管).
The video of the turtle’s rescue(救援)has been viewed millions of
times on YouTube. It has helped raise a growing problem—the world’s
seas are full of plastic. Since 2000, there has been huge increase in worldwide plastic production, but
we recycle less than one-fifth of it. A lot of this plastic waste ends up in the ocean. Today, scientists
think about 8.1 billion kilograms go into the sea every year. Most of the plastic will never biodegrade
but remain there for a long time.
This ocean plastic hurts millions of sea animals every year. Some fish eat plastic because it’s
covered with sea plants, and it looks and smells like food. Typically (通常), eating plastic leads to
more hunger. “Imagine you ate lunch and then just felt weak and hungry all day,” says scientist
Matthew Savoca. “That would be very terrible. Sometimes eating pieces of plastic can seriously hurt
sea animals and even result in death. ”
Plastic is useful to people because it’s strong and lasts a long time, but this is bad news for sea
animals. According to Savoca, “Single-use plastics, such as straws, water bottles, and plastic bags,
are the worst. ” These objects are used only once before we throw them away. About 700 sea animals,
including the turtle from the video, have been caught in or have eaten this kind of plastic. Luckily,
the turtle was alive and returned to the ocean.
How will plastic affect sea animals in the long term? “I think we’ll know the answers in 5-10
years,” says Debra Lee Magadini from Columbia University. But by then, another 25 million tons of
plastic will already be in the ocean.

Passage 10
On Nov. 11, an Australia jockey got hurt after his horse “broke down” during a horse race in
Hong Kong. Though the jockey is safe now, his horse is not so lucky. Since the horse’s leg injury
would lead to its death, vets killed it in front of audience on the spot.
Falling off a horse at high speed has a big risk of injury. You can say it’s the jockey’s choice to
take part in the sport. But what about the horses?
This is not the first time that animals have been harmed because of animal entertainment-related
sports. For example, about 180,000 bulls are killed in bullfights around the world, with many more
injured in bullfight events every year, according to Human Society International, an organization
improving the human-animal relationship globally. Hunters shoot more than 800 lions in South
Africa.
To help these animals, animal lovers have started many campaigns, which seem to be taking
effect. In June, Churchill Downs, the site of the famous Kentucky Derby in the US, stopped all horse
racing which was to run to July 3. Circuses (马戏团) using animals have been banned (禁止 ) by
many countries around the world in recent years due to animal welfare worries, according to the
website Four Paws.
Animals play an important part in our lives and are more than tools for sports and entertainment.
The human-animal bond can be seen in all kinds of places. Service animals can help people in their
jobs and animals are also used to help and care for people with illnesses and who have experienced
abuse (虐待).
“We can have our sports, drinks, lively parties, and beautiful hats but we can leave the animals
out of it,” reported Vox.
30.From Paragraph 3, we know that __________.
A.animals are hurt or even die in animal entertainment
B.many people hunt wild animals for fun or personal use
C.animal entertainment-related sports are popular
D.the number of bulls and lions goes down quickly

32.According to Vox, animal entertainment-related sports are __________.
A.exciting B.necessary C.avoidable D.meaningless
Passage 11
Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media. We use it almost every day in order
to keep up with what is happening in our friends’ lives or find out the latest information. Although it
has a bad influence if we don’t use it properly, social media has done more good than harm.
The greatest advantage is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to
keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. With social media, friendship goes beyond
geography. We’re able to find friends old and new. Also, it makes it easier for us to make friends,
especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy? If yes, social media
has probably helped.
Social media is also ideal (理想的) for making yourself heard. Anyone with a voice can express
it. Anyone with a talent is free to show it. Everyone is the new content (内容 ) creator. Moreover,
anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result, it has become much faster to
cover the news than ever before.
Social media, on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes. A study published by the
Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about
his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colourful information and perfect
pictures online in order to show off their best moment. So we often get a distorted sense of how
wonderful their lives are compared to our own.
Social media does not cause sadness; it simply provides another tool for us to use. Is it good or
bad? Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says, “What is interesting is the power and
influence of social media ... We must try to use social media in a good way.” After all, you decide
how you use this powerful tool.
33.What can we learn about social media from the passage?
A.We use social media to only record our best side.
B.We can use social media to find out the shiest friends.
C.Social media can help people connect with others more easily.
D.Everyone can be a reporter in the Public Library of Science.

Passage 12
People can travel without much money by staying in other people’s house. Sometimes the
travelers may sleep for a few nights on other people’s couch (沙发) for free.
This way of travelling is called couch surfing.
Couch Surfing. org is an organization that connects travelers all around
the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share
their homes and hometowns with travelers from other places. In this way strangers can help strangers
in order to make the world a better place.
The organization has millions of members in 238 different countries and it has changed the way
of travel forever. Jamie from Australia has traveled in this way all over the world. “When I traveled
before, I used to find a cheap hotel to save money, now I stay in really nice houses and apartments.
But the best thing isn’t the free living condition, it’s the people you meet. A couch surfing host will
usually cook you a meal which helps break the ice. Then they’ll often introduce you to their friends
and take you to the places they enjoy. Couch surfing allows you to experience a country and its
culture.”
Why do people agree to let a stranger sleep on their couch? Delphine, an experienced host from
Paris, has an answer. “They say that money makes the world go round but I try to help people go
round the world without much money!” She says with a smile. So far, she has received more than
100 travelers. “I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and I’ve made friends from all over the
world,” says Delphine, who is also a professional cook. “And of course, I like sharing French food
with them. Usually, my guests love trying it but I’ve had problems sometimes. Once I cooked roast
lamb (烤羊肉) for a guest but unfortunately, when she got here, she told me she was only used to
eating vegetables!”
The idea of travelling the world for free has even been made into a TV series. Alex and Zsolt
from the US set out with no money at all. They relied on social networking websites like Facebook
and Twitter to ask for help. They say, “wherever we went we were always provided with food. All
over the world, food is a common bond (纽带).” They travelled sixteen different countries and the

Passage 13
What is SQ3R?
SQ3R was first developed by researchers at Ohio State University. SQ3R is a useful technique
(技巧) for understanding written information.
SQ3R stands for the five techniques you should use to read a book: Survey, Question, Read,
Recite and Review.
Survey (S): Scan the material to get the overview (概述). Read the headings to see the major
points. Read the introductory paragraphs and the summary at the end of the chapter (章,篇 ).
Remember, you are scanning the material and not actually reading every sentence.
Question (Q): Make questions that can be answered during the reading of the material. This will
give a purpose to your reading. Take a heading and turn it into a question. For example, if a heading
in a chapter about cell division is in your biology text, make a question by turning the title around:
“How does cell division occur (发生)?” or “How many steps are involved in cell division?”
Read (R): Now you read the material and try to find answers to your questions. This is a careful
reading, line by line. You may want to take notes or make flashcards.
Recite (R): As you read, look away from your book and notes and try to answer your questions.
This checks your learning and helps to put that information in your memory.
Review (R): To check your memory, scan portions (部分) of the material or your notes to verify
(核实) your answers. Review the material and note the main points under each heading. This review
step helps you retain (记住) the material.
原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
15
The SQ3R method is just one technique that can be used to understand and retain information
when you read. Students learn in different ways. Therefore you should be aware of your learning
styles. Knowing whether you are an auditory (learn by hearing), visual (lean by seeing) or
kinaesthetic (hands-on) learner helps you to understand your best leaning environment. The SQ3R
technique of reading can help to improve your reading skills no matter what your style is.
40.If you want to know the overview of the material, you should ________.
A.read each sentence line by line carefully
B.avoid looking at the major points
C.focus on the meaning of the first paragraph
D.read the headings, the introductory and the summary parts
41.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Making questions about the material will lead us to read on purpose.
B.Careful reading can check what we have learned by reading.
C.The reciting step helps us to know our learning styles clearly.
D.The review step helps us to get the answers to the questions.
42.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A.To tell us different ways to memorize things.
B.To explain the research on biology.
C.To encourage us to read more materials.
D.To give us some help to improve our reading skills.
Passage 14
As your phone’s alarm blares (发出刺耳鸣响), you slowly open one eye. How can it be morning
already? It seems like it was only a few hours ago that you finished your homework. If this sounds
familiar, you’re not alone. Many teens struggle to get enough sleep.
According to the Sleep Foundation, nearly 60 percent of middle school students and more than
70 percent of high school students in the U.S. aren’t getting the recommended (被推荐的) 8.5 to 9.5
hours of sleep a night. In Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a group of students have formed an organization
called Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times. It wants local middle and high schools to
push back the start of the school day to 8:30 a.m.
In fact, schools in several states have changed to later start times in recent years. Research shows
that inadequate (不足的) sleep can negatively affect students’ health and grades. Starting the school
day too early can deprive teens of much-needed sleep. Studies show that well-rested teens are more
likely to get good grades and less likely to suffer from (患有) depression.
As Aiden Rood, the co-founder of Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times, explains,
“Kids are healthier in general when they start later, and they do better in school.”
However, not everyone thinks schools should push back the start of the school day.
原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
16
Many school teachers say delaying (延迟) the start of the school day would create a number of
challenges. First, school buses would have to be rescheduled, more money would be needed. There’s
also concern (担心 ) that later school start times could leave some kids walking home in the dark.
Changing school hours could also create child care problems for some parents.
In addition, opponents (反对者) say, later school start times would leave teens with fewer hours
for after-school activities and homework. That’s what Erin Isherwood, a parent in Chico, California
is worried about. The start time at her kids’ high school was pushed back 45 minutes this year. “My
son has an exercise class that he absolutely (绝对地) loves at a gym, now he can’t go.” She explains.
43.The words “deprive teens of much-needed sleep” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to
________.
A.provide teens with much-needed sleep B.increase teens’ much-needed sleep
C.take much-needed sleep away from teens D.talk about teens’ much-needed sleep
44.According to the passage, what is a possible benefit of later school start times?
A.Students can get up early to do more exercise.
B.Students can get more knowledge about their health.
C.Students can finish their homework more easily.
D.Students can get better grades.
45.Some people don’t agree with later school start times because ________.
A.students will have more time for after-school activities
B.some students will walk home in the dark
C.students will have to take school bus to school
D.students will get enough sleep
46.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Should Your School Day Start Later? B.When Is the Right Time to Sleep?
C.What Can Students Do After School? D.Is Enough Sleep Good or Bad for Students?
