My classmates and I are always crazy about thinking of the future. Most of our conversations are about which colleges we want to go to or the jobs we dream about. My diary has more pages about my grades than real diary entries.
Recently, I realized that focusing too much on the future was stopping me from enjoying the present. I was doing homework not because I wanted to learn, but just to get good grades for college. I even chose some classes just because they were easy and would help my grades.
I used to think high school was just a step from being a kid to becoming an adult. But last month,I went to a school dance, and that changed everything.
That night, I danced with 200 other sweaty (出汗的) teens. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I was living in the moment. We weren’t thinking about the future at all. All that mattered was that we were young and having fun. The only problem we had was getting blisters (水泡) from wearing high heels.
Most of us didn’t even do our homework that day. Even I, someone who usually works very hard, didn’t finish mine.
It felt amazing to just be young! That night, we danced, sang, and really enjoyed ourselves. We forgot about college and future careers for a while. That night changed my view of high school. Since then, I’ve been trying to live more in the moment as a teenager. Whenever I start thinking too much about the future, I remind myself to focus on today.
I’ ll think about being an adult later, but for now, I just want to enjoy being a teenager.

What do comic book villains have in common? They harm others or break the law to get what they want. Another thing is that they often wear costumes in green and purple colors, and some even have green or purple skin. But why do they wear these colors? Let’s find out.
First, let’s look at culture and history. In Shakespeare’s play Othello, a character warns another about envy and calls it a “green-eyed monster”. This is where the saying “green with envy” comes from. However, even before this play, people connected the color green with negative (消极的) feelings like greed. The ancient Greeks believed that when a person was sick, their skin might turn green because of too much bile (胆汁). Over time, green has come to stand for greed, sickness, envy, and ambition—feelings that are often found in villains.
But what about purple? The color purple is often connected with power. It is not a color that we see a lot in nature, and in ancient times, purple dye (染料) was very hard to make. This made it rare and expensive, so only the most powerful people could afford it. In ancient Rome, only leaders could wear clothes in purple, and in England, Queen Elizabeth I allowed only close relatives to wear purple. So, when a villain is shown wearing purple, it suggests they are powerful or think of themselves as powerful. It also shows that they want respect from others.
Now, let’s look at color theory (理论). When the three primary colors ( red, yellow, and blue) are mixed together, they create white light. If you mix any two primary colors, you get one of the three secondary colors: orange, purple, or green. Most superheroes wear at least one primary color, and some have all three. If heroes wear bright primary colors, comic artists often use secondary colors like green and purple for villains. This way, even if you don’t know the story or the characters, you can quickly tell the heroes and villains apart just from their colors.
32. What does the underlined word “villains” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Main characters in stories. B. Writers of comic books.
C. Characters who harm others. D. Superheroes in the stories.
33. Who is allowed to wear purple clothes in old times?
A. Villains. B. Rulers. C. Superheroes. D. Artists.
34. How does the writer organize his ideas?
A. In time order. B. In space order.
C. From specific to general. D. From general to specific.

15 years ago, I was poor and lived alone. A nearby pet hospital always kept one or two adoptable (供领养的) animals in the window. One day, a beautiful black cat showed up. The moment I saw her, I decided to take her home and named her Carla.
① . Every night, Carla and I would sit side by side watching TV. We shared lots of hours of doing nothing—— the quiet time that can feel sort of lonely if you’ re alone, but like healing (治愈) if you have someone with you.
② . I married a woman named Lynn and we finally bought a house. For over ten years, it was the three of us.
The day after Christmas, six years ago, Carla jumped on our bed. We thought she just wanted her breakfast. Lynn headed downstairs— but, strangely, Carla stayed in the bedroom. A moment later, Lynn came running back: “I smell smoke.” I went to the basement (地下室), where I found fires from the ceiling. I carried our kitchen extinguisher (灭火器) and tried to put it out; and I ran up to the kitchen and called 911.
A firefighter later told us that if Carla didn’t buy us that extra time, the fire would have covered the house and us.
While the house was being repaired, we spent a month in a hotel. Carla would tell you that it was the best time of her life: her people, a bed, food —all in the same room.
Our schedules (日常安排) slowly changed as we got older. And then came the warning signs. Carla started to lose a lot of weight. The light began to leave her eyes. One night I made a fire and she climbed in my lap and bumped her head into my face. Then she went and sat quietly nearby as we watched television, just like the old days. It felt like a goodbye. I think she knew.
The next day our vet told us that there was little more we could do for Carla. We had to let her go.
③ . We haven’t got used to a house without Carla. We still expect her at dinner, and Lynn still waits for her to come and say: Time for bed.

Guy de Maupassant (莫泊桑) was a famous French writer, born on August 5, 1850, in Normandy. He is best known for his short stories, which have a lasting influence on modern literature.
Maupassant’s early years were difficult. His parents separated when he was just 11 years old, and his mother raised him and his younger brother by herself. Under his mother’s influence, Maupassant developed an interest in reading and writing.
A turning point in his life came when he met the well-known writer Gustave Flaubert, his mother’s friend. Flaubert became Maupassant’s guide, helping him shape his writing style. Much like Flaubert’s works, Maupassant’s stories told the difficult life of poor people. Flaubert also introduced young Maupassant to some of the other famous writers of his day, such as Emile Zola and Henry James.
In 1880, Maupassant published his first major work, “Boule de Suif”(《羊脂球》). It was a big success. But his best-known work was The Necklace which was published in 1884. It tells the story of Mathilde Loisel, a woman who borrows a beautiful necklace to wear to a party. After losing it, she spends her whole life working hard to pay for it, only to discover that the necklace was a fake (假货). This story shows the problems of pride and the hard realities of life for many people.
Even though his writing career lasted only about ten years, Maupassant was very productive. He wrote around 300 short stories, six novels, and hundreds of newspaper articles. His clear and simple writing style, along with his ability to show human feelings, made him a pioneer in short stories.
Maupassant is often described as the father of the modern short story. His works were admired by people of the time. His style of writing has been copied by those who came after him. Maupassant inspired (激励) many other famous writers, including W. Somerset Maugham, O. Henry, and Henry James. Sadly, Maupassant fought with mental illness in his later years and died on July 6, 1893, at the age of 42.

Growing up
Growing up is like a journey. I’ve learned a lot on the way.
Learning about the world is part of growing up. I learn through books about people in different times and places. At home, my parents always teach me how to be a kind person. Besides, I have learned how to get along with classmates and teachers at school.
However, there are difficulties during the journey. For example, I couldn’t achieve a balance between schoolwork and hobbies. Luckily, my teacher Mr. Wang advised me to manage my time well.
So, it is Mr. Wang who has a great influence on me. He is a person of great wisdom. He teaches me not only the knowledge in books but also the knowledge out of books. Whenever I feel worried, I will go to ask him for advice.

29. What is the correct order of the story?
①I went to a school dance.
②I wore high heels and got blisters.

35. According to the colour theory, what colour should we use for Superman?
A. Orange. B. Purple. C. Green. D. Red.

The next day, our vet told us that there was little more we could do for Carla. We had to let her go.
③ . We haven’t got used to a house without Carla. We still expect her at dinner, and Lynn still waits for her to come and say: Time for bed.
④ . Eventually (最终), we’ll welcome new animals into our home. But I’m sure I’ll never be as thankful to another cat as I am to her.
36. Carla jumped on the bed because she wanted to ________.
A. have her breakfast B. play with her owner.
C. remind her owner about the fire D. sleep on the bed
37. We can put the following sentence “Soon, I started to see daylight and put my life back in order.” in ________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④

A. Carla was a gift from a local pet hospital.
B. Carla was with the writer for over ten years.
C. The writer felt lonely doing nothing with Carla.
D. The writer has got used to a house without Carla.
39. What can we infer from the story?
A. The fire started in the kitchen first.
B. Time in the hotel was Carla’s best time of life.
