Black and white mountains and rocks covered in colorful mist — the combination of Chinese and Western painting styles — caught the eye of Michela Millstein at an art exhibition in San Francisco.
“I think there are a lot of meanings behind the paintings. You can tell that it’s trying to show cultural things and not just a picture,” Millstein says. Having studied Chinese for three years, Millstein, a high school student in the San Francisco Bay Area, says she loves Chinese culture.
The exhibition, The Flying Colors, recently presented more than 60 pieces of Chinese ink paintings by a local artist, Arthur Ku, at San Francisco City Hall. Arthur Ku is a well-known painter, calligrapher, and artist. “His endless devotion to the art community has undoubtedly contributed to the vitality (活力) of San Francisco,” the mayor said in the announcement.
Ku was born in Guangdong Province in 1941 and settled in the United States in 1977. He has been exploring the “splash ink and color” style, which is a technique of working with splashy (泼墨), colorful washes to create an abstract, expressive style. Ku’s artistic talent in traditional Chinese brush and ink painting inspired a unique style of down-to-earth and creative freedom, which created a critical attempt to turn traditional Chinese brush painting into modern and contemporary art, according to the mayor’s statement. Ku is also keen to promote cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the US to improve art and friendship. He has successfully held several joint painting exhibitions in the US for artists from China.
“I think inclusiveness brings unity and diversity brings vitality. We are now living in the most challenging times. So, I think it’s important for us to embrace more inclusiveness and diversity, to have more cultural dialogue, so that we can communicate better and respect each other more.” said Arthur Ku.
24. What does Millstein mainly talk about in Paragraph 2?
A. The reason for holding exhibitions. B. The effect of culture on artistic styles.
C. The features of Chinese ink paintings. D. The cultural significance of the works.
25. What does the mayor probably think of Ku’s painting?
A. It is costly. B. It is traditional.
C. It is innovative. D. It is understandable.
26. Why did Ku hold painting exhibitions in the US?
A. To boost communication of culture and art.
B. To found an international charity organization.
C. To enhance the reputation of some Chinese artists.
D. To introduce the history of Chinese traditional arts.
27. In which column of a newspaper will you read the passage?
A. Fitness. B. Culture. C. Environment. D. Technology.

Layton Guenther recently took a break from work to talk about moving from a wealthy neighborhood near New York City to a farm on Long Island. “Farming — for where I grew up — was a very unusual career choice,” said the 32-year-old American. “But everybody belongs to the land in their own way. None of us should feel separated from it.”
Guenther was raised in a wealthy town outside New York, where most people never think about working on a farm. Today, Guenther grows potatoes, pumpkins, wheat and other crops at Quail Hill, New York. She is one of a growing number of college-educated Americans in their 20s and 30s who are changing the face of organic farming.
In the United States, organic farming is a growing, fifty billion dollars industry. Some of the best-known organic farms on Long Island are operated by women. Women make up a little more than 37 percent of all organic farmers nationwide. They represent 36 percent of all commercial farmers. Experts predict women’s share in farming is likely to continue to grow. One reason organic farms are more popular is that their smaller size means less money is needed to support them. The average organic farm is about 141 hectares, compared to 178 hectares for a commercial farm.
These new young farmers chose organic farming because of their desire to have an impact on society. Guenther said that the farmers wanted to protect natural resources for future generations, to fight climate change, and to feed their community good and healthy food.
Although organic farming is growing quickly, it comes with high labor costs and sometimes smaller harvests than commercial farming. So it can be a difficult business for new farmers. “When I look now at the starting of the farm, it seems really audacious,” Guenther said. “But in that environment, in 2008, everybody had lost their jobs and there was no work. So, it didn't feel strange to start something new.”
28. Why does Guenther say farming was a very unusual career choice in her hometown?
A. Farming is seen as the most tiring job there. B. Farm work is usually done by women there.
C. People there have no need to farm for a living. D. People there undertake farming in their own way.
29. Which of the following makes organic farms more popular?
A. Occupying less area. B. Having good harvests.
C. Costing low labor. D. Employing modern technology.
30. Why did the young generation begin to take up organic farming?
A. To prevent climate change. B. To make a difference to society.
C. To experience a novel career. D. To produce more natural food.
31. What does the underlined word “audacious” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Profitable. B. Exciting. C. Promising. D. Daring.

To promote employees’ creativity, managers should consider offering a set of rewards for them to choose from, according to a new study by management experts at Rice University.
The study, co-authored by Jing Zhou, Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management and Psychology at Rice’ s Jones Graduate School of Business, is the first to systematically examine the effects of reward choices in a field experiment, which was conducted in the context of an organization-wide suggestion program.
“Organizations spend a lot of resources and make a great deal of effort in designing incentive stimulation plans that reward employees who exhibit creativity at work,” Zhou said. “Our results showed that the effort may be a bit misplaced. Instead of discovering one reward type that is particularly effective at promoting creativity, what is more effective is to provide employees with the opportunity to choose from several reward types, if they submit one or more ideas that are among the top 20% most creative ones.”
Workers in the study were given a range of options: a financial reward for the individual employee or their team, a self-decided reward such as getting priority to select days off, or a donation the company made to a charity selected by the employee. Those choices had positive, significant effects on the number of creative ideas employees thought up and the creativity level of those ideas.
The studies also found that rewards aimed at helping others, such as making a donation to a charity, might be especially powerful. But for less-creative employees, alternative rewards that benefit those in need might actually lower creativity and should be avoided.
The researchers also found that the choice of rewards developed creativity by raising the employees’ belief in their ability to be creative Alternative rewards also had a powerful impact on promoting the creativity of employees who earlier had scored high on an assessment of creative personality characteristics.
32. Why was the study conducted?
A. To promote employees’ creativity.
B. To discover and reward creative employees.
C. To develop a system of selecting employees.
D. To investigate the influence of different reward choices.
33. Which statement would Professor Zhou agree with?
A. It’s necessary to confirm which reward is the most effective.
B. It’s time-intensive to examine the effects of reward choice.
C It’s advisable to let employees choose their own favorite reward types.
D. It’s inappropriate to choose from the top 20% most creative employees.
34. What reward would be least beneficial to less-creative employees?
A. Financial reward. B. Charity donation.
C. Occupation promotion. D. Assessment priority.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Choice of Rewards Promotes Creativity
B. Financial Rewards Can Motivate Employees
C. Organizations Should Focus on Employees’ Demands
D. Good Management System Inspires Employees’ Potential

“Are you ready, Rosa?” asked Dad. “Of course. Let’s go!” Actually, I was ready before they even woke up this morning. I couldn’t wait.
We all piled in the car and headed for the beach. I carried the cake. Woofie wagged his tail and stuck his head out of the window. The sun was shining and the sky was blue. What a lovely day! A perfect start for my perfect birthday.
Arriving at the beach, Dad found a nice place to spread out the beach blanket. I went exploring and found interesting ants. Upon seeing what I was doing, Mom screamed out, “Red ants!” It was at the moment that I discovered they stung. I was stung by the awful ants! She rushed me down to the water at once. To her relief, I was OK.
When we were back, Woofie was staying near our blanket, looking very happy. I could easily spot vanilla cream dripping down his nose. “He knocked the cover off the cake!” I shouted. In fact he only licked a little bit. “We can’t eat it now,” Dad sighed. Then, he went to fetch the rest of the food. Mom thought Dad had put it in the car. Dad thought Mom had put it in the car. They were both sure. But we couldn’t find the food basket anywhere. “Do you still remember this is my birthday?” I murmured. I felt a little disappointed. “I am so sorry, Rosa. We may forget to take it!” Mom apologized. Anyhow we ate some cake after Dad cut off one fourth, more than where Woofie licked.
I had nothing to do but clean Woofie with my coat. Bad things happened again. Now it was windy and sand blew everywhere, which was like a desert. To make myself cheer up, I played a game with Woofie. He was my camel and I was an explorer, but he wouldn’t let me ride on him. We didn’t finish the game because Dad said to everybody to get in the car, so sand wouldn’t blow in our eyes. Woofie jumped around me in circles catching beach flies. What a dog! He always knows how to get fun.
Rain came with a little thunder. Most people left. “It won’t last long.” I said, “We can sing songs here while we are waiting.” I like singing. Woofie tried to sing, too. But I don’t think that was singing. After a while, we decided to go home. “We’ll stop for takeout somewhere,” Dad promised. “Triple Z Party Burgers?” I begged. “Sounds good.” Mom said.

26. Why did Ku hold painting exhibitions in the US?
A. To boost communication of culture and art.
B. To found an international charity organization.
C. To enhance the reputation of some Chinese artists.
D. To introduce the history of Chinese traditional arts.

A. Profitable. B. Exciting. C. Promising. D. Daring.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了年轻一代选择有机农业的原因及其挑战。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“Guenther was raised in a wealthy town outside New York, where most people never think about working on a farm.(Guenther在纽约郊外的一个富裕小镇长大,那里的大多数人从未想过在农场工作)”可推知,Guenther所在的富裕小镇的人们不需要通过务农来谋生,因此在她的家乡,务农是一个非常不寻常的职业选择。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“One reason organic farms are more popular is that their smaller size means less money is needed to support them. The average organic farm is about 141 hectares, compared to 178 hectares for a commercial farm.(有机农场更受欢迎的一个原因是,它们的规模较小,意味着需要更少的资金来支持它们。平均有机农场约为141公顷,而商业农场为178公顷)”可知,有机农场更受欢迎的原因之一是它们占地较小。故选A。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“These new young farmers chose organic farming because of their desire to have an impact on society. Guenther said that the farmers wanted to protect natural resources for future generations, to fight climate change, and to feed their community good and healthy food.(这些新的年轻农民选择有机农业是因为他们希望对社会产生影响。Guenther说,农民们希望为子孙后代保护自然资源,应对气候变化,并为社区提供良好健康的食物)”可知,年轻一代开始从事有机农业是因为他们希望对社会产生影响。故选B。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段的“Although organic farming is growing quickly, it comes with high labor costs and sometimes smaller harvests than commercial farming. So it can be a difficult business for new farmers.(尽管有机农业发展迅速,但与商业农业相比,它的劳动力成本很高,有时收成也较小。因此,对于新农民来说,这可能是一项艰巨的任务)”可知,有机农业虽然发展迅速,但伴随着高昂的劳动力成本和有时较小的收成。因此对于新农民来说,这可能是一项困难的业务。所以当Guenther回顾农场刚开始时,他觉得开农场的想法非常的大胆。划线单词意为“大胆的”。故选D。
D
C. It’s advisable to let employees choose their own favorite reward types.
D. It’s inappropriate to choose from the top 20% most creative employees.
34. What reward would be least beneficial to less-creative employees?
A. Financial reward. B. Charity donation.
C. Occupation promotion. D. Assessment priority.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Choice of Rewards Promotes Creativity
B. Financial Rewards Can Motivate Employees
C. Organizations Should Focus on Employees’ Demands
D. Good Management System Inspires Employees’ Potential
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. A
【解析】

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“Our results showed that the effort may be a bit misplaced. Instead of discovering one reward type that is particularly effective at promoting creativity, what is more effective is to provide employees with the opportunity to choose from several reward types, if they submit one or more ideas that are among the top 20% most creative ones.(我们的研究结果表明,这种努力可能有点错位。与其发现一种对促进创造力特别有效的奖励类型,更有效的方法是为员工提供从多种奖励类型中进行选择的机会,如果他们提交了一个或多个最具创造力的20%的想法)”可知,研究表明提供多种奖励类型供员工选择更为有效。由此可推知,周教授会建议让员工从多种选择中选择自己喜欢的奖励类型。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The studies also found that rewards aimed at helping others, such as making a donation to a charity, might be especially powerful. But for less-creative employees, alternative rewards that benefit those in need might actually lower creativity and should be avoided.(研究还发现,旨在帮助他人的奖励,如向慈善机构捐款,可能特别强大。但对于缺乏创造力的员工来说,让有需要的人受益的替代奖励实际上可能会降低他们的创造力,应该避免)”可知,慈善捐赠对缺乏创造力的员工可能降低创造力。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“The study, co-authored by Jing Zhou, Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management and Psychology at Rice’ s Jones Graduate School of Business, is the first to systematically examine the effects of reward choices in a field experiment, which was conducted in the context of an organization-wide suggestion program.(这项研究由Rice Jones商学院Mary Gibbs Jones管理与心理学教授Jing Zhou合著,是第一个系统地研究奖励选择在实地实验中的影响的研究,该实验是在全组织建议计划的背景下进行的)”可知,文章的核心信息是关于通过给予员工奖励选择来提升他们的创造力。所以“奖励的选择促进创造力”适合作本文的标题。故选A。

It’s called “study abroad” for a reason, which is that you will be spending half of your time either in class, or learning about the local culture through educational trips to museums, palaces, castles, and other historical sites. Don’t let yourself forget how absolutely amazing it is that you get to get first-hand knowledge about a culture that fascinates you.(没错。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Dad tried to start the car, but nothing happened. Seeing the disappointment on our faces, the children decided to do something to make a difference. While Dad checked the battery, which he suspected might be the culprit, I helped Mom gather branches and leaves to create a shelter from the rain. Meanwhile, Woofie who was always full of energy, found a way to entertain himself by chasing the waves that crashed onto the shore. Despite the situation, we managed to keep our spirits high, knowing that we were all in this together.
Finally, we arrived home. Over time, their efforts, especially what they did through the apps, took effect. Using a roadside assistance app, Mom was able to contact a mechanic who guided Dad through some trouble shooting steps over the phone. Once the car started, we felt a wave of relief wash over us. Although the day hadn’t gone as planned, we shared stories and laughter about the adventure, feeling closer as a family. It turned out that the unexpected challenges made the day even more memorable, teaching us that sometimes, the best memories come from the most unpredictable moments.
