More Tech, Less Work?
Do you always have enough time to relax yourself? Are the adults around you all busy with something? In modern life, everyone is as busy as a bee, but why is that?
Let’s do a simple thought experiment. Imagine yourself as a busy office worker. Now, picture having a magical set of technologies. It could make your job easier. What would you do with your extra time?
Well, you would probably work the same amount of time as before, or even more. You have doubts about this, don’t you? But it often happened in people’s life—not in factories or offices, but in homes.
With the development of modern technology, many new appliances were invented to save people time and effort. Dishwashers and electric irons (熨斗) made their way into more and more homes. Each of them could have saved hours of work, but none of them did. Full-time housewives spent more hours doing housework after high-tech was brought into their homes.
This may seem surprising, but the reasons are simple. Better technology leads to higher expectations, and higher expectations create more work. Take laundry for example. Before modern technology, most people washed their clothes only twice a year. Washing machines changed that. People began washing their clothes more often. And because it was easier to do the laundry, people bought more shirts and pants. As a result, housewives found themselves washing, drying and folding a lot more clothes.
Besides, technology has indeed reduced the time it takes to cook a meal or wash a shirt. But it has also freed up time for other household duties, especially childcare.
What does all this tell us about modern life? Modern technology brings us a lot of comfort and convenience, but it also makes us even busier. So the problem is…
36. The writer starts the passage by ________.
A. giving an example B. listing some numbers
C. asking questions D. making comparisons
37. What does “that” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Better technology. B. Higher expectations.
C. The habit of washing clothes. D. Buying more clothes.
38. The underlined word “reduced” in paragraph 6 means ________.
A. making something more B. making something less
C. making something larger D. making something stronger
39. What BIG question do paragraph 5&6 answer?
A. How does technology better our life? B. What kind of expectations do we have?
C. How often do people do laundry? D. Why do we have more work?
40. What would the writer write about after the last paragraph?
A. What kind of special roles do technology play? B. What can we do to live our life to the fullest?
C. Who can make the lives of housewives easier? D. How can we work less with more tech?
【答案】36. C 37. C 38. B 39. D 40. D

词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Before modern technology, most people washed their clothes only twice a year. Washing machines changed that.”可知,在现代技术出现之前,大多数人一年只洗两次衣服,洗衣机改变了这一点;可推测出“that”指代的是“the habit of washing clothes”。故选C。

A How does technology better our life?
