“WELCOME,XIE LEI!” BUSINESS
STUDENT BUILDING BRIDGES①
Six months ago,19-year-old Xie Lei said goodbye to② her family and friends and boarded a plane③ for London. It was the first time that she had left China.“I was very excited but also quite nervous.I didn't know what to expect[1],” Xie Lei recalled④.
Xie Lei is studying for a business qualification⑤ at a university in China and has come to our university on a year-long exchange programme⑥.“I chose the exchange programme because I wanted to learn about global business and improve my English[2]. My ambition⑦ is to set up⑧ a business in China after graduation,”she explained.
At first,Xie Lei had to adapt to⑨ life in a different country.“You have to get used to⑩ a whole new life,”she said.“I had to learn how to use public transport and how to ask for things I didn't know the English names for.[3]When I got lost⑪,I had to ask passers-by for help⑫,but people here speak fast and use words I'm not familiar with⑬.I ask them to repeat themselves a lot!”
[3]how to use...and how to ask for... I didn't know the English names for是省略了that/which的定语从句,修饰先行词things。
Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation,Xie Lei chose to live with a host family, who can help with her adaptation⑭ to the new culture.“When I miss home,I feel comforted⑮ to have a second family,”Xie Lei said.“When there's something I don't know or understand[4],I can ask them. They are also keen to⑯ learn
about China.Laura, the daughter of my host family[5],wants to study in China in the future. We take turns to⑰ cook each evening. They really love my stir-fried tomatoes and eggs!Laura says she always feels hungry when she smells it,so I taught her how to cook it,too.” [6]
Another challenge for Xie Lei is the academic requirements⑱.The first time that she had to write an essay, her tutor⑲explained that she must acknowledge⑳ what other people had said if she cited㉑ their ideas, but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought! Xie Lei was confused because she thought she knew less than other people. Her tutor advised her to read㉒ lots of information in order to㉓ form a wise opinion of her own.
Xie Lei also found many courses included students' participation㉔ in class as part of the final result.Students need to generate ideas, offer examples, apply concepts, and raise questions,as well as give presentations㉕.At first㉖,Xie Lei had no idea what she should say,but what surprised her was that she found herself speaking up㉗ in class after just a few weeks.“My presentation on traditional Chinese art was a great success㉘,which boosted my confidence㉙[7],”she said.“I'll use these skills back home for presentations. They'll help me build a strong business in the future.”
Now halfway through㉚ her exchange year,Xie Lei feels much more at home㉛in the UK.What seemed strange before now appears quite normal to her. [8] “Engaging㉜ in British culture has helped,”she said.“As well as㉝ studying hard,I've been involved㉞ in social activities.British people are fascinated by㉟ our culture and eager to㊱ learn more about it,so I'm keen to share my culture with them. While I'm learning about business,I'm also acting as㊲ a cultural messenger㊳ building a bridge between us.” [9]
期间”,相当于when;动词-ing形式短语building a bridge between us作定语,修饰名词短语a cultural messenger。
We will follow Xie Lei's progress in later editions㊴,but for now,we wish her all the best㊵.

Often, there is a false idea that one must be “in-the-know” to truly appreciate artworks. However, fine art opens the door to everyone.Learning how to look at and understand artworks requires us to take the time to view, identify and think.
Look at the Art
As the first step,it's necessary to take a moment to identify the artwork's general features:
●Is it a painting,sculpture or craftwork?
●Does it appear chaotic (混乱的) or organized?
●Are the colors bright or soft?
Identify the Art and Artist
Knowing when or how the artwork was made and learning something about the artist can reveal more context. We all know the famous painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by Picasso in 1937.However,if we can find out Picasso composed the painting to reflect a bombing during the Spanish Civil War,we'll know more about its anti-war meaning.
Even if the historical context of an artwork is not obvious, knowing the year of its creation offers more context.
Think About the Meaning
Use what you observed in the first two steps to think about meanings the artwork could have.
Consider what the title, the subjects,or the symbols meant to the artist when he or she created the artwork. What do the colors say about the artist, and how do they apply to the subjects in the art? For example, the owls in Lebo's works represent wisdom, but why are they so brightly colored?
In addition, ask how the art makes you feel. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art,but also encourage viewers to come up with their own explanations.Still, every explanation is not automatically correct, which is why the techniques described above are helpful in finding clues.
The next time you're admiring a work of art, keep these techniques in mind, and its meaning may unfold before your eyes.

When Roy Austin went on his first wildlife trip back in 2018,his only goal for the leisurely vacation was to catch sight of some African wildlife in its natural habitat—but he ended up finding something much more meaningful. He was most captivated (迷住) by the people he met in rural Kenya—particularly at the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School in Amboseli National Park.
In addition to befriending many of the students and teachers,Austin was surprised to learn how difficult it was to get books and school supplies for the children.“In rural Kenya, the government does not build school buildings. You either build it yourself or raise money to have it built,” says Austin.“A teacher was asked if they had a library. She replied,‘No,but we would love to have a library.’ That stuck in my mind.”
When Austin eventually returned to his home in Bluffton,South Carolina,he launched Libraries for Kids International.Since starting the charity,Austin has managed to ship more than 1,000 books to 11 schools across Kenya and Tanzania. He sends the books through the post office rather than FedEx to keep the shipping costs down.
As it continues to collect books and donations for additional shipments,Austin says that the charity is now helping to move a shipping container of 22,000 books from Atlanta to Kenya. In the future,he hopes to start sending donations to South America as well.
“Many people told me that it can't be done. It's too expensive to ship books, and they will disappear going through customs,” Austin says.“However, every worthwhile project will have problems and barriers. If you focus on the problems, you will never start. On the contrary,if you focus on the aim and solve the problems as they arise, most anything is possible.”

Oliver's journey with tai chi began in her early 20s,when she was suffering from a back injury, which left her lying in bed for six months.

It is no wonder that art plays a significant role in human life,of which colors are an essential part.As for the hidden meanings of colors used in art,we don't often think about them but they do work.
In a conceptual artwork, placement of colors at appropriate locations can make an amazing visual impact. 1 In an abstract art setting, using tints (色调) of colors creates a bright atmosphere and mild sensations of joy or peace.
Yellow is a color that represents happiness or lack of courage, but a slightly darker shade of yellow used with a bright red can create a mood for adventure. 2 Bright yellow used with black conveys determination, confidence and power.
Not only that,if you're an artist trying to get across an idea, use colors and combinations to make a point. For example,an activist working on water conservation projects could use brown, yellow, blue, and orange to create a beautiful summer setting with children playing. 3
Additionally, right colors can attract business. If it is a food chain, use red and yellow to stress the sensation of hunger and increase customers' appetite. 4 If you're selling floor tiles (地砖),use blue and green in advertisements to impress upon potential buyers the calm, relaxing atmosphere your product will create.

1.答案:A
解析:根据前文“In a conceptual artwork, placement of colors at appropriate locations can make an amazing visual impact.” 故选A。
2.答案:E
解析:根据前文“a slightly darker shade of yellow used with a bright red can create a mood for adventure”以及后文“Bright yellow used with black conveys determination, confidence and power.”
3.答案:G
解析:根据前文“For example,an activist working on water conservation projects could use brown, yellow, blue, and orange to create a beautiful summer setting with children playing.”
4.答案:D
解析:根据本段主题句“Additionally, right colors can attract business.”以及前文“If it is a food chain, use red and yellow to stress the sensation of hunger and increase customers' appetite.”
5.答案:C
解析:根据后文“As long as you create a harmony of colors and a deeper expression in your artwork without making an unpleasant visual impact, then the sky is the border.”
