continued holding the Olympic Games for almost 12 centuries. The last ancient Olympics
were held around the year 393, and there would not be any Olympic Games for the next
1,500 years or so. Then a Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin restarted the Olympic
Games, and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
2. Have students answer the second question in A3 on page 18.
I believe that the Olympic Games can help people of different racial origins and from
different cultures live side by side in peace because sport focuses on a person’s athletic
capabilities and not on the colour of their skin or cultural background. The Olympic Games,
by celebrating sportsmanship worldwide, draw attention to the hard work that athletes put
in and the devotion they have to their specific sport. Sports fans do not care about race or
culture either, but instead, are impressed by the athletes’ physical and mental abilities and
show their appreciation for every athlete’s effort.
3. Have students answer the third question in A3 on page 18.
I think Coubertin’s words mean that the Olympic Games would have a positive influence on
the world well into the future. Coubertin believed that through the “joy of living” and “faith
in the future”, the Olympics would make the future better so that people of all races and
cultures could live in harmony. When Coubertin said “its ambition and its will to ascend”, he
was referring to how the Olympics would motivate humans to strive for greater and greater
ambitions with each generation, making humanity stronger over time.
4. Have students work in pairs and discuss the following questions.
(1) Do you think the Olympic motto is inspiring not only for sports but also for life in general? Why?
Yes. The Olympic motto has inspired and motivated Olympic athletes to try their best
throughout the years. The motto focuses on solidarity, devotion and excellence that we all
aim for in our lives. With these qualities, we will surpass ourselves continuously and develop
our greatest potential.
(2) If your city plans to host the Olympic Games, what can you do to help make it successful?
