This is exactly the case for Holly Smith, 34, from Surrey, when she lost her job two years ago. At the beginning of 2020, Holly was working as a general manager for a small independent bakery business in Surrey. She had been there six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she had to pack up her bags and leave. Being made redundant came as a huge shock for her and she panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time. Holly didn’t know where to turn initially, but she was determined to find a silver lining, so she picked up a paintbrush and began to paint. Holly painted a portrait of her parent’s dog, a Spinone Italiano named Bailey, and shared the image online. Straight after, a few friends requested their own pet paintings and soon her career took off. Holly named her business Holly & Murphy, after her special five-year-old cocker spaniel, Murphy. She is often at her most creative when she’s floating on water, together with her furry companion in her boat. She combines watercolour paints and pencils to bring dogs’ faces to life. A small painting usually takes two to three days to complete. Customers love how she captures their pet’s personality in great detail. Some of the most memorable paintings she has been asked to do are of dogs that have passed away. Her dog portraits start at £295 and can cost up to £595. “When it first happened, it felt like the end of the world,” Holly, a current full-time painter and business owner, told The Mirror, “but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And I’m so grateful to have a job that I love.” 4. What does the underlined word “redundant” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Responsible. B. Retired. C. Unimportant. D. Unemployed. 5. Who contributed to the initial development of Holly’s business? A. The netizens. B. Holly’s parents. C. Holly’s friends. D. Customers losing their pets. 6. What do customers think of Holly’s paintings? A. They speak highly of her paintings. B. They don’t like her pet paintings. C. They think her paintings need to be improved. D. They think her paintings should include more details. 7. What does the story convey to the readers? A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Every cloud has a silver lining. C. He who laughs last laughs best. D. Failure is the mother of success. D 5. C 6. A 7. 根据画线词的上文“She had been there six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she had to pack up her bags and leave. (她在那里待了六年,当他们告诉她必须收拾行李离开时,她简直不敢相信)”和下文“came as a huge shock for her and she panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time (对她来说是一个巨大的打击,她对在如此困难的时期挣扎着支付账单和找另一份工作感到恐慌)”可知,此处在描述Holly失业时的情况,失业让她受到巨大打击,她的处境很艰难。 根据第四段中“Holly painted a portrait of her parent’s dog, a Spinone Italiano named Bailey, and shared the image online. Straight after, a few friends requested their own pet paintings and soon her career took off. (Holly给她父母的狗画了一幅肖像画,这只狗名叫Bailey,是一只史毕诺犬,并在网上分享了这幅画。不久之后,一些朋友要求她画自己的宠物画,很快她的事业就起飞了)”可知,一开始是朋友们关照了Holly的绘画事业,然后她的事业成功了,因此是朋友们为Holly生意的初期发展做出了贡献。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“Customers love how she captures their pet’s personality in great detail. (顾客们喜欢她捕捉宠物个性的细节)”可知,顾客们很喜欢Holly在绘画中捕捉到了宠物个性的细节,对她的画作评价很高。故选A项。 通读全文可知,文章围绕Holly的故事展开,在被公司解雇后,她的生活陷入困境,但她决定寻求一线希望,开始拿起画笔为宠物画肖像,收到了很多好评,事业取得了成功,再结合第一段中“Sometimes when it feels like things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place. (有时候,当你感觉事情正在分崩离析时,它们实际上可能正在恢复原状)”可推知,Holly的故事传递出这样的讯息:看似糟糕的事情,可能会带来好结果。因此,B项“黑暗中总有一线光明”符合题意。故选B项。 C Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech(California Institute of Technology)are exploring. They’re working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth. Caltech’s scientists have created a special tool for this project. They call it MAPLE. MAPLE and two other devices are part of a project that was sent into space in January, 2023. MAPLE’s job is to test the idea of sending energy wirelessly from space to Earth. We’re used to using wires to move electrical energy from one place to another. But sending energy without wires is a lot trickier. The method used by Caltech’s scientists depends on the way waves act when they meet. Imagine two waves coming together as they travel in the same direction. If the tops of the waves line up, they combine to make a bigger wave. But if the top of one wave lines up with the low point of the other, the waves cancel each other out. The Caltech team has found a way to control the timing of lots of microwaves so that they can combine their power, and focus the energy in one direction. It’s a little like using a magnifying(放大的)glass to focus sunlight into a small, hot point of light. To prove that the system could work, MAPLE sent energy to two devices just 30 centimeters away in space. This energy was then turned into electricity, which made two small lights light up. Next, MAPLE sent energy all the way down to a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able to detect the energy, proving that it’s possible to send solar energy to Earth from space. Dr. Hajimiri, one of the project’s leaders, thinks that one day, the system could be extremely useful, bringing energy to places that need it, all over the world. He believes that in the future, we’ll be able to send energy to remote regions and areas destroyed by war or natural disaster. 8. What is the challenge in Caltech’s project with MAPLE? A. Solar energy detection. B. Wireless energy delivery. C. Sending devices into space. D. Using wires to move electricity. 9. How does the Caltech team concentrate solar power? A. By changing the way microwaves act. B. By magnifying waves coming together. C. By controlling the timing of microwaves. D. By lining up the waves in opposite directions. 10. What potential benefit could the system bring in the future according to Dr. Hajimiri? A. Warning people of natural disasters. B. Turning solar energy into electricity. C. Providing a solution to energy shortages. D. Sending energy to regions in urgent need. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Use of Solar Energy in Space Exploration B. The Challenges of Generating Energy Without Wires C. The Development of a New Tool for Collecting Electricity D. The Possibility of Sending Energy Wirelessly from Space to Earth 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段“Caltech’s scientists have created a special tool for this project. They call it MAPLE. MAPLE and two other devices are part of a project that was sent into space in January, 2023. MAPLE’s job is to test the idea of sending energy wirelessly from space to Earth. We’re used to using wires to move electrical energy from one place to another. But sending energy without wires is a lot trickier.(加州理工学院的科学家们为这个项目创造了一个特殊的工具。他们称之为MAPLE。MAPLE和另外两个设备是2023年1月送入太空的一个项目的一部分。MAPLE的任务是测试从太空向地球无线发送能量的想法。我们习惯于用电线把电能从一个地方传输到另一个地方。但是在没有电线的情况下传输能量要棘手得多)”可知,MAPLE的挑战是无线能量传输。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The Caltech team has found a way to control the timing of lots of microwaves so that they can combine their power, and focus the energy in one direction. It’s a little like using a magnifying(放大的)glass to focus sunlight into a small, hot point of light.(加州理工学院的研究小组已经找到了一种方法来控制大量微波的时间,这样它们就可以结合它们的能量,并将能量集中在一个方向上。这有点像用放大镜把太阳光聚焦成一个小的热点)”可知,加州理工学院的团队通过控制微波的时间来集中太阳能。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Dr. Hajimiri, one of the project’s leaders, thinks that one day, the system could be extremely useful, bringing energy to places that need it, all over the world. He believes that in the future, we’ll be able to send energy to remote regions and areas destroyed by war or natural disaster.(Hajimiri博士是该项目的领导者之一,他认为有一天,这个系统会非常有用,把能源带到世界各地需要它的地方。他相信,在未来,我们将能够向偏远地区和被战争或自然灾害摧毁的地区输送能源)”可知,根据Hajimiri博士的说法,这个系统在未来会向急需能源的地区输送能源。故选D项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech(California Institute of Technology)are exploring. They’re working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth.(想象一下,可以一直使用太阳能,即使是在晚上。这就是加州理工学院(Caltech)的科学家们正在探索的想法。他们正致力于在太空中收集阳光并将其能量发送到地球)”以及纵观全文可知,主要讨论了使用Caltech科学家创造的特殊工具MAPLE从太空向地球无线传输能源的可能性,所以D项“The Possibility of Sending Energy Wirelessly from Space to Earth(从太空向地球无线传输能量的可能性)”是本文最好的标题。故选D项。 D On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds” effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together”. Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous. 12. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A. The methods of estimation. B. The underlying logic of the effect. C. The causes of people’s errors. D. The design of Galton’s experiment. 13. Navajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________. A. the crowds were relatively small B. there were occasional underestimates C. individuals did not communicate D. estimates were not fully independent 14. What did the follow-up study focus on? A. The size of the groups. B. The dominant members. C. The discussion process. D. The individual estimates. 15. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies? A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. B 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第二段内容“This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and come to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. 根据第二段的“In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. (从更专业的角度来说,群众的智慧要求人们的估计是独立的)”和第三段的“The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. (这项研究的关键发现是,当人群被进一步划分为允许进行讨论的小组时,这些小组的平均值比同等数量的独立个体的平均值更准确。例如,从四个五人讨论组的估计中获得的平均值明显比从20个独立个体获得的平均值更准确)”可知,人们在没有独立的情况下,分成更小群体,平均值是更准确的,说明即使在估计数字并非完全独立的情况下,准确率提高也是可以做到的。故选D。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的“In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? (在一项针对100名大学生的后续研究中,研究人员试图更好地了解小组成员在讨论中的实际行为。他们是否倾向于选择那些对自己的估计最有信心的人?他们追随那些最不愿意改变主意的人吗)”可知,在后续研究中,研究人员试图更好地了解小组成员在讨论中实际做了什么。结合两个问题,因此可知后续研究的重点是小组内的讨论过程。故选C。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous. Hashtags(标签) and keywords for Citywalk are currently trending across multiple Chinese social media platforms as more and more people look to share their experiences and thoughts online. Biar Kon, a 17-year-old student, whose parents were working in neighboring Sudan, moved to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, to attend school. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up. One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meeting, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meeting tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.” The next day we arrived at the swim meeting late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I should be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she expected me to take part. As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were all here to do just one thing — beat me. All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head, “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself. The match began! I swam harder than I had ever swum before. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The match began!I swam harder than I had ever swum before. After the first turn, I was surprised to find that I had a half-body length lead over other girls. However, they soon sped up and narrowed the gap. Halfway through the race, the girl to my left almost drew level with me, while I already began to feel tired. At that moment, the powerful words of my grandma echoed again in my ears, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” I waved my arms and legs to keep swimming and used every last bit of strength to swim the last 50 meters. As soon as I touched the wall, I looked the screen, waiting anxiously for the result. It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I saw my time in the screen but could hardly believe it - mine was at the top of the list! My coach ran to me and hugged me tightly when I got out of the water. Narrow victory as it was, I did win my first real trophy that day. Everything felt like a dream as I stood on the winner's podium, weeping tears of joy. Back at home, I delightedly replaced the “Honorable Mention” on my shelf with the new trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.” 加速:speed up/ accelerate ②.拥抱:hug/hold in one’s arms ③.代替:replace/take place of 情绪类 ①. B They don’t like her pet paintings. C. They think her paintings need to be improved. D. They think her paintings should include more details. 7. What does the story convey to the readers? A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Every cloud has a silver lining. C. He who laughs last laughs best. D. Failure is the mother of success. C Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it’s night. The Possibility of Sending Energy Wirelessly from Space to Earth D On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds” effect. A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. Hashtags(标签) and keywords for Citywalk are currently trending across multiple Chinese social media platforms as more and more people look to share their experiences and thoughts online.
