Right now, there are still 870 million hungry people in the world, according to a survey of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. Children can’t escape this, either. Around fifteen million children die of hunger each year. What’s causing food shortages? There are several reasons. There are now more droughts and floods. This is very harmful to farmers and their ability to grow food. Besides, with the growing population, feeding everyone becomes more difficult. There are a little more than seven billion people in the world. By 2050, the world population will be more than nine billion. Another reason is food waste. The average person throws away 50kg of food every year. How can we help with food shortages? The easiest ways is to cut down on food waste. Next time before throwing away the food on your plate, just think how much work has been done to make it. By buying less, we waste less. This takes the pressure off producing so much food. And it helps to solve the problem of food shortage. You can also ask your schoolmates to join you. In 2013, researchers at Kansas State University in the US put up short anti-waste slogans in dining rooms “Think Before You Waste”. Guess what happened? Students wasted fifteen percent less food after that! The another of the study said, “You don’t need a huge activity to make difference.” Reasons of food shortages 6._____________________________ The growing population 7._____________________________ Ways of 8.____________________ 9._____________________________ Ask the other students to join in your anti-waste work. Scientists now are trying to make machines that can think like us. Artificial Intelligence, AI has given the machine the ability to copy human’s acts. We are already using AI on our smart phones, iPads and other digital devices. The best example of this would be Siri, a voice helper created by Apple. It can recognize a user’s voice and complete actions. For example, you can tell Siri to “ call Mom” or “set a time for 10 minutes”, and it will do these things for you. In 2018, the world’s first AI news reporter was shown to the public. It had a voice, facial expressions and actions of a real man. “He” learnt from live videos by himself and could read texts as naturally as professional news reporter. According to Xinhua, “he” had become a member of its reporting team and could work 24 hours a day on its official website. Surprisingly, many people failed to discover that the news was reported by AI. AI is also making artworks. For example, a painting created by AI was sold at the price of $ 432,5000 earlier this year. This means the computer now doesn’t just follow rules, but makes some decisions and “thinks itself”. This is not the first AI artwork, just the first piece on sale. As AI is doing more for us, we can have time to do more important things. However, what if we somehow created an AI that was smarter than us? How would it act, to help us or control us? Besides, bad guys might also use AI. For example, they could use AI to create websites to steal people’s personal information. Or they could use AI programs to break into computer systems. Luckily, this is set to change. European Union plans to set up a group to create some safety rules for AI technology by carefully discussing the dangers of highly developed AI. AI technology Present situation AI _1_ that machines have the intelligence as humans do. AI is already common in our daily lives. Well, these are not enough if you are a student at Tsinghua University. According to a new rule of the university, students must prove themselves in the swimming pool. They need to pass a swimming test of at least 50 meters, and those who fail the test will be required to take a swimming course throughout their school years. By the time they graduate, they will have known how to swim; otherwise they can’t graduate with their bachelor’s degrees. The news made waves in Chinese society. Some people praised the university for requiring a necessary skill that can save lives, and they also believed that the rule would help improve students’ health. However, others questioned if it was fair to expect those who come from inland cities to be able to swim. In fact, this is not a new rule. Tsinghua University first made swimming a requirement in 1919 but later gave it up because the number of students became too large and there were not enough swimming pools in the school for them to learn swimming. Anyway, it is still good news that Chinese students’ health has become more and more valued. Why not just take this chance to learn one more life-saving ability? B What is one thing that would help parents understand their kids better? More than 8,000 US kids answered this question in an online poll by KidsHealth. Org. Many US kids – two out of three – said they get along with their parents. Bu that doesn’t mean they never disagree. In fact, most kids reported arguing with their parents, at least sometimes. And two out of five kids said arguments sometimes even include shouting at each other. “It’s certainly normal to disagree and argue,” says Darcy Lyness, an American expert. “But it’s also important to learn how to do so respectfully. Be patient. Don’t use a raised, angry voice.” And not surprisingly, three out of four kids said they have lied to their parents sometimes. Many said they lie so they would not get in trouble or let their parents down. According to Lyness, lying isn’t just wrong. It can actually have bad results. Telling the truth builds trust. “Telling the truth,” says Lyness, “shows maturity”. But older kids actually lie more often than younger ones. Kids aged 12 to 14 not only said they lie more, but they also reported having less fun, feeling less close and not getting along well with their parents. According to Lyness, those feelings are common. Ad kids become more independent, they have more areas of disagreement with their parents. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “kids and parents get along differently at each stage of the journey,” she says. “As kids grow and change, it is important for everybody to change.” ( )1.In Lyness’s opinion, kids ________ their parents. You will probably throw them all away. But actually, all of these pieces of waste need to be sorted. On July 1, 2019, Shanghai created a new rule about sorting rubbish. Everyone in the city must sort his or her rubbish into four kinds: wet, dry, harmful, and recyclable. According to the new rule, people who fail to sort garbage properly can be fined up to 200 yuan. The new rule is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone. To better carry out the rule, Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account” service for its people. Account holders get points by correctly sorting their rubbish according to the new rule. Through the Alipay app, they can get milk, phone cards and other products when they have enough points. Why should we sort our rubbish? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year. Most of the waste is buried, which may pollute water and land. Besides, it’s harder to find new space to bury the waste. In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable rubbish can be made into new materials, while wet waste can be used to make gas and heat. But in order to better recycle, we need to sort our rubbish. Can’t sorting-processing factories do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own rubbish. Besides, less waste may be produced when people are encouraged by this. According to a study, over 90 percent of people believe that rubbish-sorting is important for the protection of the environment. Shanghai rubbish-sorting rule The rule and its importance · Rubbish shouldn’t _1_ directly before it is carefully sorted. · Everyone has duty to sort rubbish. Liu, with other workers, weighs the things and takes down the numbers. But she works for only 20 minutes and then goes back to study. Liu, 15, is actually a student in Nanjing Baijiahu Middle School. Both the company workers and the sellers are students. The company collects the waste from every class and sells it at the end of every month. You’ve gone from a hero to the most embarrassing adult in the world. Your child has become a teenager! What makes adolescence so difficult? Physical and emotional changes are the reasons that make them change so much. When they are young, children live in a safe and simple land called “childhood”. Parents organize their lives. Parents choose children’s clothes, take them to places, and spend time with them. They’re there with the children when there is a problem. As children get older, however, they learn about another land – an exciting land, called “adulthood”. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of pants, four pairs of shoes and a few other things. It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, Lin was one of those people who couldn’t stop buying. Back then, she had more than 400 pieces of clothing and handbags. But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014. Joshua Becker, an American writer, was introducing a minimalist lifestyle to the public. He encouraged people to reduce the number of their things to fewer than 100. Lin decided to give it a try. She threw away 90 percent of her things. She also deleted 120 contacts she never spoke to from her social account. After doing all that, Lin said she felt “lighter”. We used to think owning more was the way to lead a rich life. But now many people come to believe that fewer is better. According to US scientist Joel Stillerman, rich and educated people are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. “These people are making the statement: ‘I can afford to have less.’” He said. But leading a minimalist life doesn’t mean spending less. A report by UK market research company Euromonitor finds young Chinese people spend less buying things, but more on their hobbies, short holidays and visits to the movies. “They are looking for a life that is all about culture,” Alison Angus, head of lifestyle at Euromonitor, said. If the voice drops, we’re confirming information which is known. For example, you remember that Jack is from New York, but you are not sure about that. Then you can ask, “you live in New York, don’t you?” A.Indirect questions are used more than direct question. B.But all in all, each type can be used to ask polite questions. While it provides us with a very convenient way of communication, it is gradually shaping our language. According to a recent survey, more than 76 percent of young people in China say their Chinese language skills have become poorer. They don’t use rhetorical techniques as often anymore but choose all kinds of Internet emojis. With the popularity of the Internet, people’s communication habits have become quite different from what they used to be. For example, direct expression is people’s favorite way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, he or she will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji. Also, “copy and paste” culture is getting popular. Some people aren’t serious about choosing words or building sentences when they express ideas. They simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “whenever you disagree with each other, you…” In general, words are being used less. Since people can share photos online, there is little need for them to describe things with words. If this situation continues, it could make a difference to our way of thinking. When we use expressions without thinking, it means we have become too lazy to express our real feelings. If teenagers are used to using expressions like emojis, they can’t understand words and use them properly. Will our language skills keep going down? That is a problem we should pay much attention to. Some experts say that we should try to think independently and develop our own language skills. They also tell us to read more classic works and keep using various words to show our own feelings. Strange animals and plants, shipwrecks and more. Is it possible that there’s a whole underwater island with homes, places and temples? Some people believe there used to be one – Atlantis. Atlantis is believed to be an island that appeared over 11,000 years ago in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Greek mythology, the island got its name from the god Atlantis, who owned the island. On the island, people lived rich lives. They built large houses with gold. This ancient place is also said to have developed technology that modern society hasn’t discovered. Islanders used special stones to get energy from the sun, moon and stars. Their brains were so developed that they could understand what animals were saying. The story of Atlantis was first told by Greek philosopher Plato. According to him, the people on Atlantis became so greedy that the gods got mad at them. Then, the gods created fires and earthquakes that caused Atlantis to sink into the sea. There are no other historical records of Atlantis. However, some people believe the story is true. Some researchers have tried to find proof of the story. They have found underwater tools of ancient cities around the Atlantic Ocean. They said these tools look just like what Plato described. Just not long ago, high-teach search company Merlin Burrows said its workers had found houses and towers of the island (what they said) near the coast of Spain. No one can say for sure that Atlantis was ever real. However, one thing is for sure: the mysterious island has caught the imaginations of many people around the world. People love the story so much that they have made many movies about it, including the hot movie Aquaman. The film Green Book won Best Picture, the biggest award of the night. How did it impress so many people? The reason is probably that it speaks openly about the problem of racial discrimination. The time between the late 1870s and 1960s was a very different period in American history. Many parts of the country had Jim Crow law, which allowed racial segregation. Those laws made life and travel dangerous for black people. They couldn’t use certain hotels, restaurants or even gas station. They had to stay indoors after dark, or they might be punished. But in 1963, a black postman named Victor H. Green made a list of business places in New York, which were friendly to black people. He published the list secretly as a small book with a green cover. The book helped black people travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away, and the book went away too. It became a forgotten part of history. Thanks to this film, people remember it again. The film Green Book is made according to the true story of a road trip through southern America in the early 1960s. In it, the black pianist Don Shirley hires a white person who is named Tony to drive him to his shows around the country. Tony doesn’t like black people, but he still takes up the job. However, they face many problems because of Shirley’s skin color on the way. Those problems lead them to develop a special friendship. As Tony and Shirley drive through the south, they realize how much they have in common and come to understand each other’s race. But no one can be compared with Taylor, a girl from Virginia, US. Among her family and friends, Taylor is known as a cow whisperer(牛语者).She started showing these skills at the age of 9. And the young girl thinks she was born to do it. When Taylor was younger, she visited her uncle’s farm that had lots of cows. The little girl loved them at first sight. She couldn’t help running to feed them and even named all of them. “‘Come here, Bessie,’ I often call her like this and she’d eat grass on my hand,” Taylor said. “But when my mom and dad came, they would run away.” The secret of the girl is the style of talking. “You have to say easy words with them, or they will be jumpy and scared”, said Taylor. In December 2015, Taylor was in a TV show. When Taylor was in the show, the girl talked to cows so they didn’t get nervous. She said thing like “It’s OK” and “No one is going to hurt you.” And later, the girl even had a little chat about her school life with the cows. The cows were listening to her during the whole chat. It is 800 meters wide and 4,000 meters long and there are many things to do. We took a ride on some horse through the park and even had a boat trip on one of the park’s lakes. My mom loved looking at all the works of art in the park. Dad enjoyed the concert most. My brother and I liked the zoo most of all. It was small but had some cute animals. Our guide said the Central Park Zoo is one of the oldest zoos on the United States. In the afternoon, we took a boat to see the famous Statue of Liberty(自由女神像)that stands in New York Harbor. Our guide said this 46-meter-high statue was given to the United States by France in 1886 to show the friendship and freedom both countries shared. The guide told us that millions of people came to the United States and were greeted by this statue as they entered our country through Ellis Island. For them, it represented the freedom and chances they would find in our country. Dad said my grandparents often spoke of how excited they were to be greeted by “Miss Liberty” when they came to this country through Ellis Island. Seeing the Statue of Liberty made me so proud of our country. Well, that’s all about my trip. I’m going to see a Broadway play in half an hour. I’ll be back home in two days. See you soon. They worry that they won't say things correctly or that they will look stupid, so they don't talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to use it again and again until you get it right. Use all of your resources. Even if you study English at a language school, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class. Using as many different methods and tools as possible will allow you to learn faster. Listen to English. By this, we mean, listen to the radio or CDs in English. This is more different than watching the television or films because you can’t see the person that is speaking to you. Recording yourself is also necessary. Not everyone likes to hear their own voice on tapes while learning a language, but it’s a good way to compare your pronunciation by recording your voice. Do exercises and take tests. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and taking tests is that they give you a chance to see what you have learned. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Keep doing this and you will really make great progress with English.
