“Fiona, my dear,” answered her mother, “you are a lovely girl, but you can’t be a close friend to everybody. You can’t buy friends with a smile or a few good words.”
Hearing this, Fiona thought about her mother. Her mother was always willing to help her; she put up with all of Fiona’s dislikes and problems; she always forgave her; she loved her a great deal and so on. That was what makes friends! Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing that she already had the best friend that anyone could ever want.

From the first day that men began to study numbers in daily life, some numbers have been thought to be lucky, while others are considered unlucky. And it’s not just Western culture that has done this. Cultures in Japan, China, India, and Africa have done the same thing, but for different reasons. Let’s take a look at some commonly known lucky and unlucky numbers to see why they are loved or hated.
►7
Everyone knows that “7” is lucky. But 45 ? The root of most lucky numbers can be found in religion. God, for example, is said to have created the world in 7 days. Until the 1800s, there were seven known planets in the solar system (太阳系). Seven is even the usual number of spots on a ladybug (瓢虫) and ladybugs are considered good luck themselves.
►4
This number means bad luck in Asia. For example, the pronunciation of “4” in Chinese is very similar to the word “ 46 .” And because of this, “4” has been considered bad luck in China.
►666
“666” is a/an 47 number. It is extremely bad luck in Western culture but very good luck in many Asian countries.
According to the Christian Bible (圣经), the number 666 means Satan (撒旦,魔鬼). It might be the most avoided number in Western culture.
But in Asia, people love “666” because it 48 “things going smoothly,” and is considered to be very lucky.
►2
Not like western countries, in many Asian countries, “2” is good luck. It is thought that good things come in pairs, which is a phrase that 49 appears in Western culture.
►8
Maybe no people in the world like the number “8” better than the Chinese. A recent report said that the phone number 8888-8888 was sold for over $200,000 in 50 .
45. A. when B. how C. why D. where
46. A. happiness B. death C. luck D. sadness
47. A. different B. boring C. difficult D. interesting
48. A. sounds like B. looks like C. feels like D. seems like
49. A. never B. still C. even D. only
50. A. America B. China C. Japan D. Africa
C. Fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺。每空格限填一词,首字母已给)(14分)
In recent years, more and more people have started to learn computer programming. Kids as y 51 as six are being signed up for coding (代码) classes. Are they too young to learn to program? We interviewed three parents. Let’s hear what they think.
◆Martin
In my opinion, schools and parents shouldn’t introduce coding to kids. Those who have are missing several important points. Bill Gates and Marissa Mayer didn’t become s 52 because they could code. Instead, they succeeded because they were creative thinkers.
Although technology has greatly developed over the years, raising children hasn’t c 53 much. Children thrive (茁壮成长) when they have parents who teach them important values and life skills. Kids shouldn’t spend all of their time in front of a s 54 . They should spend more time with their parents and friends.
◆Edward
Through learning how to code, kids learn “computational” thinking. “Programming is a(an) u 55 skill, and computational thinking is an important ability. Those who can properly make use of the p 56 of computer have an advantage over those who can’t. Therefore, I think that in the 21st century, every kid should learn to program.
◆Christa
I think kids should be introduced to computer science. However, before they learn to code, kids should f 57 learn ethics (道德准则). They need to understand how a single program can cause serious damage on the Internet within minutes.
D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) (12 分)
Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at her school. She was very clever and fun, and got on well with everyone. It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age, she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She felt very lucky, as no other girl had so many friends at school.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, in class, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. When she got home that night, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends.

45. A. when B. how C. why D. where

47. A. different B. boring C. difficult D. interesting
48. A. sounds like B. looks like C. feels like D. seems like
49. A. never B. still C. even D. only
50. A. America B. China C. Japan D. Africa

However, when all the presents had been made and shared among classmates, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She spent hours crying. How could it be possible? Everyone came and tried to console (安慰) her for a while. But each one only stayed for a short time before they left.
When she got home that night, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends.
