As you read this passage, you probably have some paper, a pen and at least one pencil in front of you. Have you ever wondered how they were first made and where they come from?
The word “paper” comes from the name papyrus, a plant. The ancient Egyptians took the soft centre of this plant and added water to make a wet mixture which was then pressed together and hung up to dry. The resulting paper was strong yet flexible and was used as writing material in Greek and Roman times. However, it was the Chinese who invented what we now know as paper. The method, in use over 2,000 years ago, also involved pressing and drying we t material to form paper. Many materials were used. It was not until the 19th century that paper became easy to make and cheap to buy.
The earliest pens were hollow reeds (空心芦苇) that were put into ink to produce a form of writing. By the 6th century BCE, feathers had taken the place of the reeds and continued to be used until the appearance of the metal nib (笔尖). The ballpoint pen was developed in the second half of the 20th century by the Hungarian Biro brothers.
From the time of the Romans, a metal stick, made of lead (铅), was used to write on papyrus. The lead left only a light mark and was later replaced by another soft metal, called graphite (石墨). Unlike lead, graphite produced a much firmer and heavier line. The graphite sticks, however, broke very easily. So an Italian couple invented something a little like our modern pencil.

A.The benefit of the pen. B.The inventor of the pencil.

Driverless cars have long appeared in science fiction movies and books, but with the development of technology, things have changed a lot. 36
The development of the driverless car actually started in the 1920s. But it wasn’t until the 1980s that the first ones were successfully created, one of which was made by Mercedes-Benz. Since then the technology has gone from strength to strength. These days Uber is the latest to show its plan of driverless cars. 37 Google and Tesla already have driverless cars on the road.
But do we really need them? 38 Some would argue “yes” to both. If perfected, it could lead to much safer road conditions for all. It would be of great help to the sick and the disabled. They would also allow roads to increase their capacity (容量) between 200-400%. 39 Google’s self-driving car has had 14 small accidents. Even worse, Tesla’s has caused an accident seriously in 2015.
40 And what’s the future? Maybe you can imagine a world of flying cars taking us to work. They’re going to allow people to take long rides at 75 to 150 miles every hour where you’d get stuck in heavy traffic now. It’s really, in a not-too-far future, going to be something that is practical. Wouldn’t that be fine?
A.And are they really safe?
B.Driverless cars are still not perfect right now.
C.They have moved from a dream to a reality recently.
D.It follows Apple and Ford who have showed similar plans.
E.That means they can make the roads safer.
F.Perfection, though, seems to be just out of reach.

Papermaking technology (造纸术) is one of the four great inventions in ancient China. Before papermaking technology was invented, the Chinese carved or wrote words on tortoise shells (龟甲)、animal bones (骨头), bamboo slices, wooden plates, and silk. Tortoise shells, animal bones and wooden plates were too heavy to use while silk was too expensive. In the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, someone used ramie (苎麻) to produce paper, which was very rough (粗糙的) and not suitable for writing.
In the Eastern Han Dynasty, an official named Cai Lun created a sheet of paper using mulberry (桑树) and other fibers along with fishing net, old clothes, ramie, and other waste. He steamed and cooked all those materials with water, and changed them into pulp (纸浆), then poured the pulp out carefully on a fine screen and dried it into a kind of thin paper. The paper was suitable for writing and was also very cheap so it became very popular. Therefore, Cai Lun played a great part in papermaking technology.
After the Eastern Han Dynasty, papermaking technology had been gradually improved. And then bamboo and straw could also be used as the materials for making paper. Because of different materials, many kinds of paper were produced for different uses. For example, the Xuan paper made in Xuanzhou of Anhui Province belongs to the high-quality paper used for Chinese calligraphy and painting.
Papermaking technology was introduced to the Korean peninsula (半岛) and Japan in the late Sui and early Tang dynasties, and later to Arabia and other countries. During the Tang Dynasty, paper was folded and sewn into square bags to preserve the flavor of tea, while the later Song Dynasty was the first government on Earth to bring out paper-printed money.
The invention of paper provides a more convenient way for communication of information, and also plays an important role in the development of global civilization.

61.例文
Technology changes our life and inventions are around us. In my daily life, the smart phone has had a greater influence on me than any other invention.
I take my smartphone wherever I go because it’s convenient. With its help, I can search for useful information at any time. I can also download and store things that I need. But the smartphone brings me some problems at the same time. Staring at screens too much is bad for my eyes. And sometimes I use my smartphone to search for solutions without thinking and exploring on my own.
So, I think the smartphone is a double-sided sword and we should use it correctly and wisely.
