① A New Year’s resolution is a promise to do something differently in the new year. Some of you might be giving something up or maybe you’re taking up a new hobby. Maybe you want to eat more healthily or do more to help the environment. These are all great ideas, but if you aren’t sure what to choose as your goal for this year, here are some suggestions (建议) for you.
② Get active — Keeping active is a really good way to keep healthy. You might try a new sport or start learning that dance you want to try. Or it could just be going for more walks or runs in the park. There may even be a sport or activity club at school or in your local area that you could join which would help you to make this resolution.
③ Take up a new hobby — Taking up a new hobby can be a great thing to do in the new year. By taking up a new hobby, you can learn something new. If you’re interested in art, why not try to do one sketch (素描) every week? Or if you like cooking, you could help out an adult in the kitchen with one meal a week to get your cooking skills up? Or maybe you’d like to learn a musical instrument? You may even take up something completely new. What have you always wanted to try?
④ Eat well — Lots of us love chocolate, sweets and foods that maybe aren’t the healthiest for us! So you could make a resolution to eat some healthier foods in the new year and cut down on the sugar!
⑤ Go green — There are lots of things you can do to be eco-friendly (环保的). Perhaps you could do more recycling at home or try to cut back on the number of single-use plastics? You could promise to eat less meat, or make sure you turn the tap off more while you’re brushing your teeth.

Between the food, gifts and games of Christmas Day and the fireworks and parties of New Year’s Eve, many people make resolutions, setting goals for the year ahead.
New Year’s resolutions are an opportunity to pause, reflect (think carefully) and plan. They allow you to think about the changes you’d like to make, such as being kinder or taking up a new hobby. They make you feel that the new year is a fresh start, which can give you the energy and opportunity to make changes. Trying to achieve (实现) what you want keeps you calm and confident.
Although it can be exciting to set goals, making too many can lead to feeling overwhelmed (不知所措的).
Professor Ann John, an expert in young people’s mental health, says it’s important to be realistic. “Choose resolutions you are able to do and make smaller goals on the way to bigger ones,” she advises. Setting out when you’d like to achieve these goals can be helpful, as well as celebrating when you get there. “If you decide you want to learn to play the guitar, celebrate learning a scale (音阶)," says John. Another tip is to focus on being positive when you set goals, such as saying “I will.” rather than “I will not...”
