A
My father is a truck driver, and he has been for over 30 years. He works more than 12 hours every day, and weekends.
One evening my father brought my brother and me to pick up our mother. We arrived at the Eagles Hall and were waiting in the truck when my father smelled something. He looked behind our truck and could see smoke coming from a house, a block behind us. He drove quickly to the house. The smoke was thick, and we saw fire when he opened the door and went inside. He came out with a woman and rushed back in for her children. He didn't stop until all the children were out. When the firemen arrived we went back to get my mother.
My father didn't even mention it to Mom. We had to tell her what we had seen. My father said that nothing much happened and not to worry. The next day, it was reported in the newspaper that the people in the house were trying to find my father to thank him. My father just said they had more important things to care about.
My father has a metal detector. He used it all over the town, in fields, bus stations, parks—almost everywhere. He found countless amounts of change, jewelry, and junk. The most valuable thing he found was a pure gold nursing pin, a badge(徽章)given to nurses when they graduated. There was a name on it, and a date in the early 1920s. Dad did some research and learned that the owner was now in a nursing home several hundred miles away.
The next Sunday he drove to see her. She was overjoyed. The pin had been lost for over 50 years. The woman asked my father how much he wanted for the pin and he refused any reward. But the woman became upset that he would accept nothing, so he compromisedby accepting gas money for the trip—though I am sure that he didn't tell her how much the drive really cost.
Any one of these events makes my dad a hero, but he never stops. I've learned from him that being a hero means doing whatever you can whenever you can.

I'm Jenny. I was moved by a story last summer. When I went to a friend's house as a guest, I found a wooden sign hung on the door. It reads, "Before entering, please put down your trouble. When returning, bring back your happiness."
After entering the house, I saw the wife and the husband were both harmonious(和睦的), two children were friendly and polite and warmth filled the house.
I naturally asked them about the wooden sign. The wife looked at the husband with a smile, "You tell the story." The husband then looked back at the wife, "You say because it was your creativity(创意)."
Finally, the wife said softly and slowly, "Once when I got home, I was surprised to see a sleepy and tired face in the elevator(电梯) mirror, with the worried eyes. So I thought when my children and husband faced this worried face, what would they feel? If I also faced such a face, what would I feel? Then I could imagine my children's silence and my husband's indifference(冷淡) at the dinner table. The next day, I wrote a wooden sign and hung it on the door to remind myself. Sometimes the worst thing about feeling afraid is that you donˈt know what to do. Here are the top 3 ways that kids who answered our survey try to help themselves feel better:
1. Do something, like playing outside, listening to music, or watching TV.
2. Talk to your parents.
3. Talk to a friend.
Talking to a friend can help, especially if that person is supportive(给予帮助的). About half the kids who participated in our survey said theyˈd been teased(取笑)about being afraid.
And even more—75%—said theyˈve sometimes said they werenˈt afraid when they really were. So no teasing is allowed. Encourage your friend today and maybe he or she will encourage you tomorrow!
Hereˈs some very supportive advice kids had for other kids:
If you get scared at night, Monica, 10, suggests listening to the radio when youˈre falling asleep. And Naruto, also 10, recommends writing or drawing what youˈre afraid of and then ripping it to pieces. Eight-year-old Jessica finds it helpful to take a deep breath when youˈre scared.
Amanda, 10, thinks kids should talk with a parent or school counselor(辅导员). “They will find a way to help you get over it,” she said.
Bethany, 9, wants kids to hang tough, so weˈll let her have the last word: “Try, try again and never give up,” she says. “Youˈre not alone!”
26.What would you do if your friends feel afraid?
A. Make fun of them. B. Tell their parents.
C. Encourage them. D. Give them up.
27.What does Monica suggest if you get scared at night?
A. Taking a deep breath. B. Listening to the radio.
C. Not telling anyone. D. Doing your homework.
28.Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The parents will find a way to help you to get over it.
B. About half the kids had been teased about being afraid.
C. Try your best and never give up. Youˈre not alone!
D. Drawing some pictures and then hand them into your parents.
29.What do the underlined words “hang tough” mean in the passage?
A. 半途而废 B. 知难而进 C. 坚持到底 D. 得过且过
30.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

32. People in Cliff-top Village Moving to New Homes So far, many people from poor areas have benefited from the government's poverty relief policies (脱贫政策).
As part of the nation's poverty relief program, eighty-two families in the cliff-top village of Atuleer in Sichuan are preparing to move to new apartments." The government has bought new furniture for each new home. Our new apartments have kitchens and toilets with running water. We only need to take clothes and quilts there," Mou'se Subure, a young man from Atuleer said. "We used to live in adobe (土坯) houses and have never seen such nice apartments."
The village is at the top of a 1,400-meter cliff. Villagers used an 800-meter rattan (藤) ladders with no railings (栏杆) to reach the nearest market several kilometers away once a week to sell peppers and walnuts, and to buy necessities. The ladders were their only way to the outside world. The villagers were very poor, with an income of about 3,000 yuan per year.
Three years ago, the village caught the attention of the government. Soon the government spent one million yuan on a steel ladder with a handrail that has cut travel time to the nearest town from three hours to one. Now, a total of 84 families-most of the villagers-will settle in their new apartments 75km away. The members of two families were so excited about their new homes that they moved on Monday, one day ahead of schedule.
In 2016, a newspaper published some photos showing students climbing rattan ladders, so more and more tourists went to see the rattan ladders. And some even tried to climb them.
After the 84 families move, Atuleer will see new tourism development. A cable car will be used to transport tourists to the village and nearby canyons (峡谷) will he developed. Some 30 better-off families will remain in the village and work in the tourist industry, running rural inns, showing tourists around and carrying bags to make money.
Shaking off poverty is not the finish line, but the starting point of a new life.

Hi, Richard,
You must have known that our class will visit the city museum next week. Let me tell you something important before the visit, Firstly, please keep quiet, Loud noises may annoy other visitors. Secondly, it is also very important to line up when entering the museum. This will help us enjoy the exhibits better. Besides, we are not allowed to use flash. Flash will damage the exhibits. Finally, make sure you bring a notebook in order to take notes. Most of the exhibits in the museum are full of history and stories, which are great for us to learn from.
I look forward to seeing you at the museum!
Yours,
