Captain Henry, a 98-year-old American retired fisherman, has become a first-time author, having written and published his autobiography In a Fisherman’s Language after learning to read at the age of 91.
Mr. Henry spent most of his life without even his closest family members knowing he was uneducated. Forced to quit school in the third grade to take odd jobs, he kept the secret close to his chest, only telling his late wife. Henry’s granddaughter, Marlisa, told reporters how he used tricks, like waiting for others to order at restaurants first, to avoid the issue.
A family argument in his 90s, she said, aroused his desire for education. “He signed a document he could not read about where he was going to live,” Marlisa said. Starting with his name, he eventually moved on to the ABC’s and children’s books. He had put them down since his wife fell ill. After the loss of his wife, he went back to reading and began to record his life. He wrote about his family’s voyage from Portugal to the US, how he went on to captain a boat, and his many journeys at sea.
His life stories have become so popular that nearly 800 copies were sold in the first two weeks after the book’s publishing. One thousand more have been printed as requests for the book flood in from as far as Germany. And now even Hollywood producers have approached Mr. Henry about buying the copy rights to his life stories for a big screen adaptation(改编).
The family also now has a book agent and a deal in the works to publish a second edition. Meanwhile, the family members say they are reconnecting and closer than ever as a result of Henry’s late-life efforts. “Everyone has a story,” Marlisa said. “It teaches that when you’re down and out, never give up.”
24. When did Henry begin writing his life stories?
A. When he was 91 years old. B. After his wife passed away.
C. After he retired from work. D. When he was 98 years old.
25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Hollywood producers wish to make a movie out of Henry’s book.
B. Henry never told anyone that he couldn’t read or write.
C. Henry began his reading with some famous novels.
D. Henry’s book was well-received only by Americans.
26. How did Henry’s family benefit from his writing?
A. His family moved from Portugal to the US.
B. The family ties were rebuilt and strengthened.
C. The family got more money from the second edition.
D. His family story has been made into a movie.
27. What message can Henry’s story give us?
A. A lazy youth, a needy age. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. It is never too old to learn. D. Practice makes perfect.

“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation(直译)of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood movie makers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective(警探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.
28. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?
A. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”
B. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
C. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
D. “Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
29. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Culture mixture B. Confucius’s words.
C. A kind of cooked dish. D. American changing cultures.
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
B. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
C. Hollywood probably made “Long time no see.” popular.
D. The phrase “Long time no see.” is recognized as correct and formal English now.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
B. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.

A new study has found that including climate impact labels(标签) on a fast food menu influenced participants’ food choices in favor of more climate-friendly items.
Study lead author Julia Wolfson, associate professor in the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School, and her co-authors wanted to test how labeling climate change impacts of fast food menu items might lead people to choose less red meat. Eating too much red meat has been linked to many health problems. Eating less red meat would also help lower greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
More than 5,000 participants were shown a sample menu and asked to choose a single item for dinner. One group of participants received a menu with non-red meat items such as chicken sandwiches labeled “low climate impact”. Another group received a menu with red meat items— burgers labeled “high climate impact”. A third control group received menus without climate labels.
Both the high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat choices compared to the control group. Menus with a high climate impact label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23 percent compared to the control group. Menus that included low climate impact labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10 percent more participants than those in the control group. “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable (可持续的) food choices in a fast food setting,” says Wolfson.
While encouraging on the whole, the results suggest that positive “low climate impact” labels are less effective in encouraging sustainable food choices compared to “high climate impact” labels. At the same time, climate labels may have the unwanted side effect of making a choice seem healthier than it actually is.
“An undeserved health halo (光环) given to unhealthy menu items could encourage people to overeat them,” Wolfson says. “So we have to look for labeling strategies that create ‘win-wins’ for encouraging both more sustainable and healthy choices.”
32. What’s the aim of the new study?
A. To decide the best method for labeling food products in general.
B. To discover the impact of climate labels on fast food choices.
C. To find out the connection between red meat and health problems.
D. To encourage sustainable food choices in fast food restaurants.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The influence of the study B. The results of the study
C. The importance of the study D. The process of the study
34. What potential effect could climate labels cause?
A. They may cause confusion among consumers
B. They might result in people consuming more red meat
C. They could make a food item seem healthier than it is
D. They may lead to an increase in vegetarian choices
35. What is Wolfson’s attitude towards climate impact labels on food?
A. Supportive B. Cautious C. Objective D. Uninterested

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you’ve read!
36 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images (形象) may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
● 37
If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do, like using a dictionary and looking up the difficult words.
● Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 38 How willing are you to make the connections happen?
● Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. 39
● How often do you read?
If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading and what you’ve read. 40 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you’ll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature, as you remember what you read!
A. Are you confused?
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. What’s your motivation?
D. Memory is sometimes not dependable.
E. Marking helps you remember what you read.
F. But other books require a bit more work on your part.
G. You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!

Good afternoon, everyone,
I am Li Hua. Today I am more than honored to speak about how to develop good habits for English learning. It’s of great importance because they can greatly enhance our language proficiency and make learning more enjoyable and efficient. Here are some effective ways for us to form good English learning habits.
To begin with, I suggest we (should) practice spoken English daily. If we do this, it will better our pronunciation and fluency, encouraging us to communicate effectively. What’s more, it will be a good idea to read English materials on a regular basis, such as books, magazines and online articles, which can improve our comprehension. Additionally, keeping an English journal is another excellent habit. Not only does it help us to reflect on what we’ve learned, but also we can practice our writing in English.
In conclusion, cultivating good English learning habits is crucial for our academic and personal growth, enabling us to upgrade our English skills and open our minds.
Thank you for your listening.
