The use of “yes” and “no” in Chinese is different from that in English. So after coming to America, the use of the two
words bring me a lot of 51 . For example, if I am asked, “Haven’t you had lunch yet?” and I have not had lunch yet,
then in Chinese I usually say “Yes, I haven’t.” But in English, I have to say, “No, I haven’t.” Because of this, my friends
often get the 52 meaning from what I want to give them.
One weekend night, my roommate Mark brought his children into the room. They made some noise while playing. I
did not 53 the noise since I was just watching TV. The next morning, I met Mark. He asked me with a smile,
“Didn’t my children make noise last night? Didn’t it make you 54 ?” Because I did not care about the noise at all,
I 55 said “Yes!” The smile suddenly disappeared from Mark’s face, and he said, “I am 56 about that. They
are going right now. See you later.” I could not 57 , and I just said, “OK. Bye!” After a moment of thinking, I
realized how 58 I was. That evening, I explained to Mark and said sorry to him. I knew he thought that I had been
very 59 .
Now to solve this problem, I have set simple rules: First, take a five-second break if I am not sure of “yes” or “no”.
Second, use “ 60 ”, so the person may explain to me in a direct way.
( )51. A. knowledge B. requests C. trouble
( )52. A. correct B. opposite C. direct
( )53. A. mind B. like C. stand
( )54. A. afraid B. surprised C. uncomfortable
( )55. A. wisely B. clearly C. seriously
( )56. A. worried B. happy C. sorry
( )57. A. understand B. accept C. explain
( )58. A. impatient B. stupid C. strange
( )59. A. kind B. strict C. impolite
( )60. A. I’m sorry B. pardon me C. all right

AI chatbots like ChatGPT 4 make it easy to write emails quickly. 1 One of the main problems is the "water
footprint." This means the total water the AI uses during its lifetime.
AI systems need data centers, which have servers (服务器) that keep and manage information. 2 Engineers use
cold water to cool them down.
Data centers run all day and night, so they use lots of water. The Washington Post says that for each 100-word email,
ChatGPT 4 uses about 519 milliliters(毫升) of water. 3 In one year, ChatGPT 4 uses over 435 million liters of water
just to write emails. This is enough water for a normal US family to use for over 1,000 years!
Data centers also need a lot of electricity(电). Writing a 100-word email uses 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity. This
could power 14 LED lights for an hour. Every year in the US, ChatGPT 4 uses over 120,000 megawatt(瓦 )—hours of
electricity to help write work emails. 4
Before the chatbot is used, it already has a "carbon footprint." Training ChatGPT 3 made about 502 tons of carbon.
This is the same as what 112 cars would make in a year. Also, building data centers sends CO2 into the air.
5 Microsoft uses cold metal plates with cold water to cool equipment, saving water. Natural energy helps too. For
example, Tencent’s data center in Tianjin uses solar power(太阳能). These efforts can help reduce the environmental harm
caused by AI.
A. When servers work, they get hot.
B. That’s a bit more than one water bottle.
C. Companies are now trying to make AI greener.
D. But they have a big influence on the environment.
E. With the chatbot, people’s life becomes more convenient.
F. This is enough power for all homes in Washington D.C. for 20 days.

When we wake up, how many of us think of what we want to do today? Almost all of us.
How many of us think of improving on what we do or focus on personal growth and development? Not many.
As Josh Waitzkin, a talented chess player, said in his book The Art of Learning., “We focus so much on the results that
the details of the learning process are lost on us.”
Why is the process of learning so important? If we are getting the result, why do we have to learn or do things in a
better way?
My point: Life is a marathon, not a sprint(短跑). You have to keep running. You have to build the foundation(地基) of
the house strong enough so that it could bear every earthquake or storm. And believer me, bad days come.
That foundation is the process of learning. Learning is more important than the results. And those who understand this
always win.
Many of us, me included, do not realize the importance of this process. When I used to correct my mistakes, instead of
第 9 页 共 10 页
understanding the cause of the problem, I was more interested in just copying the right answers from teachers. The next
time a similar question appeared, I made mistakes again. I didn’t learn anything from the first time and ended up spending
even more time later on the same thing.
My dancing teacher always reminded me to improve my postures (姿势). He said that I could go on with one hour of
dancing and go home and feel happy about exercising. But all of that would mean nothing if I didn’t improve my postures.
Only then the body would accept changes and the right muscles (肌肉) would work; or the purpose of dancing would be
meaningless.
If we don’t do something properly—it could be worse than not doing it at all. But if we focus on the learning process,
we could be faster and better for any future problems.
