夹层玻璃的诞生
One day in 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass flask(烧瓶), and it fell to the stone floor. Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn’t broken into hundreds of pieces! It had cracked(破裂)but it had held together. Benedictus wondered why.
His helper explained he had used the flask to hold liquid plastic. Then he'd put the flask aside and forgotten to wash it. The liquid plastic dried. so the flask looked empty. Benedictus realized the dried plastic had kept the cracked glass from falling apart.
The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. The car was a new and exciting invention. and many people were driving fast on the roads. When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly Benedictus thought of the broken flask. Could his accident be something useful?
Benedictus spent a lot of time in the lab, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and pressed them together. When he hit it, the “glass-and-plastic sandwich” cracked, but it didn't break into small pieces. Benedictu succeeded. He wrote in his diary, "I produced my first piece of Triplex(the name for his invention)-ful of promise for the future. "
Benedictus was right. His method of putting plastic between pieces of glass is still used today. And that's how a careless accident led to an invention that makes us all safer!

现代汉字印刷先驱:王选
Do you like reading? At this moment. in the 2020s, anyone who reads a book or a newspaper in Chinese should thank Wang Xuan, a pioneer of modern Chinese-language printing.
Wang is known as the father of Chinese language typesetting. He invented a computerized laser photocomposition system (计算机激光照排系统) for Chinese characters in the 1970s , turning a new page in the history of printing in China.
Before Wang's invention, people printed books and newspapers with movable block type (活字印刷). This was invented by Bi Sheng. Workers made character blocks(字符块)out of lead and put them in a frame for printing. This took a lot of time, as there were always many blocks to place in a frame. At the time, it would take more than 30 people 8 hours a day to print just one page of a newspaper, according to a worker at People's Daily
Wang changed this situation. In 1974,he began to study laser photocomposition. This was the most advanced printing way at the time. Only a few Western countries were working on it. But it was not yet on the market. Without any experience to borrow from, Wang studied this nearly unknown world. It's said that he took no holidays and worked more than 65 hours a week on this project.
In 1980,Wang’s hard work finally paid off. A 26-page story about kung fu became China's first laser-printed book. In late 1988, Economic Daily became the first Chinese newspaper to use laser printing technology. With Wang’s system, a newspaper could be typeset in just 20minutes. China's printing industry has said goodbye to the times of lead and fire.

人工智能的用处
Artificial intelligence, or Al in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. Al scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.
Facial recognition(人脸识别) is one of them. Al is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. Nowadays, the Chinese police use this technology to identify and catch criminals. For example, the police once caught a man in a concert, who fought with others in the restaurant and ran away after that. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.
Al is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this ability. Car makers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding( 让路), it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.
Service robots also show you how powerful Al is. Imagine this-you come back from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.
AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

( )21. What can we learn from the passage?
A. People use AI in many different ways.
B. Al will take the place of human beings in all jobs.
C. Self-driving cars will be able to talk like humans.
D. Service robots only do the work as a real music teacher
( )22. What's the passage mainly about?
A. The future of service robots.
