I played with my baby brother until nearly dark. I then made a fire, and put the kettle (水壶) over it to boil the water for tea. It was soon boiling. The baby fell asleep.
“Now,” I thought, “I can read a new book before my parents return for supper.” So I sat down to read by the light of the fire. I didn’t know how long I sat there, but suddenly I heard the sound of someone heavily walking in the room. I looked up from my book, and saw a bear standing in the open doorway.
He pushed his way into the room, slowly moving toward my baby brother. In a moment the bear would nearly catch our sleeping baby.
What could I do? I had no gun or a stick, and nobody was near to help me. I picked the kettle of hot water, and rushed toward him. He returned his angry head toward me as I moved. I threw a shower of boiling hot water in his eyes, nose, ears and open mouth.
He roared (咆哮) in anger and pain. Blinded by the hot water, he turned away from the baby’s bed and almost fell out of the door. I rushed to close it at once. I then fell, ▲ and shocked, to the floor.

Jody Mikhail goes to Cumberland Valley High School in Pennsylvania. She is a senior. A few years ago, a sign for a new girls” wrestling (摔跤) club caught her eye. Jody decided to try it. “I fell in love with it the first time,” she said. Unlike before, she’s hardly alone. Girls’ wrestling has become the fastest-growing high school sport in the US.
In 1990, there were just over 100 high school girl wrestlers in the whole country. Before 2018, just six states had approved (认可) it. Now the sport has been officially approved in more than 40 states. In the United States, there are four times as many girls’ wrestling teams today as there were 10 years ago. There are now over 50,000 high school girl wrestlers. That’s five times as many as 10 years ago. This was the biggest increase for the sport these years.
Hundreds of girls wrestled in Pennsylvania’s first official state tournament (锦标赛), including Mikhail. In the past, girls often had no choice but to wrestle boys. There were very few girls wrestling in tournaments. “There were never tournaments like this,” said Savannah Witt, a state champion wrestler who has wrestled for 10 years. “It’s amazing. I’ve been used to running into the same three faces at tournaments. Now although I don’t know half these girls, it’s exciting to wrestling them.”
Wrestling is something of a niche sport, meaning that it’s popular among a small part of the population. But we are finding out now that the world is changing. Some see the rise of girls’ wrestling as part of a larger change in women’s sports. Although wrestling is still more popular among boys than girls, there may be as many girls as boys taking part in the sport one day.
11. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving advice. B. By asking questions.

A. To introduce wrestling. B. To list the numbers of wrestlers.

13. What can we know about Savannah Witt?
A. She started wrestling at the age of 10. B. She is happy to see more girls in wrestling.
C. She used to know half these girl wrestlers. D. She has never taken part in any tournament.
14. What does the underlined word “niche” mean in paragraph 4?
A. 小众的 B. 友好的 C. 精致的 D. 普通的
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The dream to be a wrestler. B. The choices of women’s sports.

If we want to understand each other, we have to find out why we laugh and what makes us laugh. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that others want us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves.
Dr. Wiseman starts a “Laugh Lab” project to study humor. Participants (参加者) from all over the world are invited to give their personal information tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people on the website.
The project lasts for a year, hoping to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. And there is also another goal. The organizers try to find out what different people think of funny.
People don’t always laugh at the same things. According to the results, men and women do have different senses (感觉) of humor. “Men use humor to show superior (优越) to others, while women are more skilled in languages and like word play.” says Dr. Wiseman. Also, as people get older, their sense of humor changes. For example, children find a lot to laugh about, as they are always excited to see so many new things. While adults often laugh at jokes about annoying things in their everyday life. What’s more, researchers find that there really is a national sense of humor. The French like short jokes while the Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey finds that German participants are more likely to find jokes funnier than those from other countries. Why? Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.
Dr. Wiseman and his workmates also show jokes created by computers. But no participants find them funny. Although computers can do everything, they should leave the funny stuff to us.
16. What does the writer want to tell us about laugh in Paragraph 1?
A. People who often laugh are honest. B. It gives people things they want.
C. People are asked to laugh sometimes. D. It helps people know others well.
17. What are participants asked to do on the website?
①Tell favorite jokes. ②Judge jokes of others.
③Study humor. ④Give personal information.
A. ①②④ B. ①②③ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
18. What do we learn about the “Laugh Lab” project according to the passage?
A. It is set up to create jokes by computers. B. It lasts for more than a year.
C. Getting the funniest joke isn’t its only goal. D. Germans dislike this project
19. Which of the following pairs may have the similar sense of humor?
A. Jack and his parents. B. Bob and his wife.
C. Li Hua and his foreign friends. D. Lucy and her twin sister Lily.
20. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A story book. B. A science magazine. C. A travel guide. D. A geography hook.

When my parents came home, my mother said, “George, you saved your brother’s life. You are a hero, my boy!” I was so proud and happy to hear that.

Participants (参加者) from all over the world are invited to give their personal information, tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people on the website.
