Unit 12 Life is full of the unexpected【A卷·提升卷】 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 In our daily lives, we often do the same activities: getting up, going to school or work, eating, and going to bed. Sounds common? But what if something unusual or unexpected happens? That’s what I experienced one evening in April 2023 on my way home from work. As I was riding my bike home in the evening, I saw a small scruffy (邋遢的) dog with orange and white fur. It looked sad and lost, simply sitting in the middle of the road by a pedestrian crossing. It seemed unsure of what to do as it lay down and stared at the passing traffic. Nobody seemed to mind the dog either, only passing him by at a distance (在远处). At first, I also crossed over to the other side, hoping that somebody else would care for the dog. But, realizing that the dog might suddenly get up and walk into traffic, I decided I must do something to help the dog. When the light changed, I saw my chance. I used my bike to guide the dog to a street corner, blocking (阻挡) the way to keep it safe from passing cars. Slowly but surely, I was able to encourage the dog to keep walking until finally, we both made it to the sidewalk. I messaged a dog shelter group to let them know about the dog’s whereabouts. Yet, by the time I turned to it again, the dog was gone. Sometimes we don’t know what we will find or see in our daily lives. Still, what’s important is our reaction (反应) to them. Although how shy I normally am in these situations, I am glad I found the courage to help a dog in need, even if just for a moment. 1.What unusual event did the writer experience one evening in April 2023? A.Falling off his bike unexpectedly. B.Helping a dog on the road. C.Giving a hand at a traffic accident. D.Seeing a guide dog for the first time. 2.How did the writer react at the first sight of the dog? A.He passed it without minding much. B.He called a dog shelter for help at once. C.He tried to guide the dog to safety. D.He watched the dog crossing the road. 3.Why did the writer use his bike to block the way? A.To prevent the dog from walking away. B.To warn passers-by not to get close. C.To stop cars getting too close. D.To hold the dog for the light change. 4.What does the writer want to tell us with his experience? A.Be calm for unexpected events. B.Take action even if others do not. C.Be brave to look for help in hard times. D.It takes courage to help animals. ①Life is full of surprises and unexpected turns just like a roller coaster (过山车). What is the best we can do to deal with unexpected events? ②John and Jimmy are workmates in an IT company. One morning John and Jimmy both got stuck in traffic on the way to work. They both had to attend an important meeting. John got unhappy and started thinking negatively. “Why is this traffic now on this road?” “It is already 10 minutes but I am still stuck here...” On the other hand, Jimmy was also irritated by the same traffic jam, but he tuned on his music system and started listening to his favorite song. ③Both of them reached the office late. After entering the workplace, John was talking about the unexpected traffic jam. As a result, John couldn’t complete his work in the best way he could, while Jimmy seemed to be more relaxed and put across (表达清楚) his points well in the meeting. ④I am sure you also have met similar negative unexpected tings in your life. ________ Here are some ways to deal with them. ⑤First, accept that unexpected things can happen. They could be small things affecting just your day-to-day life. They could also be important changes affecting your whole life. Some make you scared. Some give you surprises. Nobody could avoid unexpected events in life. ⑥Second, prepare yourself for the unexpected. For example, to avoid forgetting keys, keep them in a handy, safe place. We may not be able to prepare for all the possibilities, so preparedness that means having mentally (心理上) prepared can help deal with unexpected events in a much better way. ⑦Third, never react at once. Instead of responding rapidly to any event, take a deep breath or two. Think about “How” to solve the problem rather than “Why” before you respond. ⑧Last, stay positive (积极乐观的). Sometimes we just need to go through experiences. Stay positive and keep going. After all, all things will pass. 5.How does the author start the passage? A.By asking a question. B.By giving a fact. C.By offering a suggestion. D.By telling a story. 6.What can we learn from the third paragraph? A.John forgot to finish his work. B.Jimmy did well in the meeting. C.Both John and Jimmy missed the meeting. D.Neither John nor Jimmy cared about being late. 7.Which of the following can be put in ________ in the fourth paragraph? A.Unexpected things are everywhere in life. B.These unexpected things may affect your daily life. C.A positive attitude can have a good influence. D.You should ignore (忽略) the unexpected things. 8.What should we think first when an unexpected event happens? A.How can I solve it? B.What will it bring to me? C.Who can I turn to? D.Why does it happen? 9.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? A.①②③/④⑤⑥⑦⑧ B.①/②③④/⑤⑥⑦⑧ C.①②/③/④/⑤⑥⑦⑧ D.①/②③/④/⑤⑥⑦⑧ My brother and I were driving home together and started talking about something interesting. Without paying attention, my brother took a wrong turn. Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the need less waste of $4. As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black Mustang (福特野马汽车) by the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to, phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help, And he did. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.” What K loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross. 10.Why did the author’s brother take a wrong turn? A.He was focused on his conversation. B.He was new to this part of the city.
