I.Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Buy Experience to Build Social Connection
The human being is a “social animal”, as Aristotle suggested. We have a fundamental need to belong. A lack of social connection puts both our mental and physical health 1 threat. How, then, might we encourage the feelings of connectedness that are so integral to our well-being?
Over the past years, my colleagues and I have conducted studies 2 (suggest) that experiential purchases (such as travel, meals at restaurants) tend to bring people more happiness than material ones (for instance, clothing and electronic goods). In recent research, we investigated another downstream consequence of spending on experiences rather than objects: it can promote a greater sense of social connection.
We conducted a series of 13 experiments involving 1, 980 participants, in most of 3 , people reported feeling more kinship (亲密感) with someone who had made the same experiential purchase than someone who had made the same material purchase. This reflects that experiential purchases are more central to an individual’s identity 4 this kind of consumption tends to represent more of his true, essential sense of self.
Moreover, the finding 5 (apply) even when people think about how their experiences differ. Meeting someone who had made a similar but superior experiential or material purchase, 6 was more likely to foster connection due to experience than material. Knowing that another person has a better version of what you have 7 create a sense of social distance. What we observe, however, is that this distance feels 8 (wide) when it comes to experiential purchases compared with material ones.
Finally, we found that after people reflected on a rewarding experience, they expressed a greater desire 9 (involve) in social activities over solitary activities when they were asked how they would spend their free time.
Experiences connect us with others, and they provide memories of such connection that people can revisit it. These memories, in turn, can encourage engagement in even more sociality. One clear takeaway from this research is 10 people would likely be wise to tilt (向……倾斜) their spending toward “doing” rather than “having.”

Section A

When 17-year-old Quattro Musser hangs out with friends, they don’t drink beer or drive around with their dates. 21 , they stick to activities such as rock-climbing or talking about books.
They are in good company, according to a new study showing that teenagers are increasingly delaying activities that had long been seen as signs of passage into 22 . The study found that the percentage of adolescents in America who have a driver’s license, who have tried alcohol, who date and who work for pay has dropped since 1976, with the most dramatic 23 in the past decade. To be sure, more than half of teens still engage in these activities, but the 24 have slimmed considerably. Between 1976, 86 percent of high school seniors had gone on a date; between 2010 and 2015, only 63 percent had, the study found.
“People say, ‘Oh, it’s because teenagers are more responsible, or more lazy, or more boring,’ but they’re 25 the larger trend,” said Jean Twenge, lead author of the study. Instead, she said, youths may be less 26 activities such as dating or driving because in today’s society, they no longer need to be.
According to an evolutionary-psychology theory, a person’s life strategy slows down or speeds up depending on the person’s 27 . Thus, exposure to a fierce and unpredictable environment leads to faster development, while a more resource-rich and secure environment has the 28 effect. In the first 29 , “you’d have a lot of kids and be in survival mode, start having kids young, expect your kids will have kids young, and expect that there will be more 30 and fewer resources,” said Twenge. A century ago, when life expectancy was lower and college education less common, “the goal back then was survival, not violin lessons by 5,” Twenge said. In that model, a teenage boy might be thinking more 31 about marriage, and driving a car and working for pay would be important.
But the United States is shifting more toward the 32 model, and the change is apparent in socioeconomic terms, Twenge said. “Even in families whose parents have never been to college, the idea that children need to be carefully 33 has become widely accepted.”
The 34 of “adult activities” could not be due to more homework or after-school activities, the study said, nothing that teens today spend fewer hours on homework than they did in the 1990s and the same amount of time on after-school activities. Nor could the use of smartphones and the Internet be entirely the 35 , the report said, since the decline began before they were widely available.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Sanding on the shore of a lake, I can’t help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.
And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?
Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago. And much like a rock. I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun.
Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and more understanding. I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.
But I’m not a rock. I’m a human-being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.
Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask a guy to leave for not falling in line with the rules. Not forceful and net rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can.” But the guy tried to argue about the note.
I sat watching. understanding both sides. I’ve been this guy before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow by looking through others’ eyes, and thus the possibility of finding content and success.
You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view.
I placed a rounded stone into my pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.
36.What does the author compare the rocks to?
A.People with varied personalities.
B.DNA unique to each person.
C.Challenges that we come across.
D.Our abilities that grows with time.
37.What caused the argument in the restaurant?
A.Lack of clarity in the sign.
B.The owner’s inappropriate attitude.
C.Demanding restaurant requests.
D.The guy’s failing to obey the rules.
38.Which best describes the author’s attitude toward the world when he was young?
A.Respectful. B.Aggressive. C.Ambiguous. D.Tolerant.
39.What does the author try to convey through this text?
A.We should adjust ourselves to new conditions.
B.Be brave when in the face of difficulties in life.
C.It’s necessary to obey the rules in public spaces.
D.Being open and understanding brings satisfaction.
【答案】36.A 37.D 38.B 39.D
从文章第三段“Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago. And much like a rock. I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun. (即使是最高的山也已磨损;没有一座像一千年前那么高。和这些岩石很像,我发现我的态度软化了,而随着每一次的旅行,我也更渴望能去更好地了解他人) ”可知,作者把岩石比成有着各自性格的人。故选A项。
文章第六段讲到“Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask a guy to leave for not falling in line with the rules. Not forceful and net rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can.” But the guy tried to argue about the note. (两年前,在太平洋西北地区旅行时,我看到一个餐馆老板要求一个不遵守规定的人离开。他的态度既不强硬,也不粗鲁。门上写着:“请戴上口罩进入我们的餐厅。我们也不喜欢这样,但让我们一起尽己所能。”但那家伙试图就这条规定进行争吵。)”,从中可知,这次餐馆的争吵原因是这个人未能遵守规则。故选D项。
38.推理判断题。从文章第四段“Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. (我也曾是一块边缘锐利的尖石)”可知,作者年轻时是有棱有角的性格,态度比较激进好斗。故选B项。
39.推理判断题。从文章倒数第二段“You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view. (圆的石头比棱角分明的石头更容易装进罐子里。前者想办法调整自己,为他人腾出空间;后者从不让步迁就别人。时间就像水流冲刷着尖锐的石头,冲走我们对从别人的角度看世界的抗拒,从而改变了我们)”可知,作者通过本文传达的应是“开放和理解的态度将使我们获得满意”。故选D项。

Road Bike Vs Hybrid Bike — Choosing the Right Bike
Road bikes are all about speed and performance, aiming to be the quickest bike possible. Hybrid bikes take characteristics from both road and mountain bikes. Is one better than the other? We’ll unpack everything there is to know about them and how they differ.
Performance
Road bikes are more performance-driven. The weight of frame plays a big part in a bike’s speed. The industry standard for building the lightest bikes is to construct carbon fiber frames. While aluminum bike frames are only a half-pound to a pound heavier, that difference can go a long way. A majority of road bikes are built with carbon and a majority of hybrids are built with aluminum or steel.
Comfort
The hybrid wins the comfort battle. One of the quickest ways to distinguish a hybrid bike from a road bike is by looking at the handlebars. Hybrids typically come with flat bars making the stability and turning easy and comfortable. Whereas the drop bars commonly found on a road bike can be challenging to stabilize for inexperienced cyclists.
Components
A bike’s components include brakes, shifters, chain, etc. Although there can be high-end components on hybrids and low-end components on road bikes it doesn’t typically shake out to be that way. Expect hybrids to be equipped with lower-end components and road bikes to be equipped with the higher end ones.
Touring
Both bikes can be used for touring. But hybrid bike frames are typically more durable for long multi-day adventures because they can sustain the extra weight of luggage, say, pannier (货篮) bags for camping vacations.
Before purchasing, be sure to locate a local bike rental shop to get familiar with a bike. Testing out a bike in the parking lot of a bike shop won’t do your purchase justice. Instead, be sure to take the road bike vs hybrid battle to the streets. No matter which bike you choose you are guaranteed to enjoy your rides knowing that you’ve picked the best bike for you.
40.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Compared with carbon fiber frames, aluminum bike frames are a half-pound to a pound heavier and don’t result in much difference in speed.
B.It’s not common to see low-end components on hybrids and high-end components on road bikes.
C.Before purchasing a bike, taking it to the parking lot of a bike shop to test out is not recommended by the author.
D.Hybrids have an edge over road bikes only from the perspective of comfort.
41.Jack, an inexperienced cyclist, chooses to buy a hybrid bike instead of a road bike for his five-day adventurous trip possibly because________.
A.a hybrid bike has an additional drop bar to keep balance
B.a road bike is not suitable for touring
C.a road bike challenges a rider’s flexibility
D.a hybrid bike can sustain more weight
42.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.An advertisement for a bike rental shop.
B.A paper analyzing the differences between two kinds of bikes.
C.A guide on how to choose between two kinds of bikes.
D.News on road bikes and hybrid bikes.
根据尾段中的“Testing out a bike in the parking lot of a bike shop won’t do your purchase justice.(在自行车店的停车场里测试一辆自行车是不公平的。)”
根据Touring部分中的“But hybrid bike frames are typically more durable for long multi-day adventures because they can sustain the extra weight of luggage, say, pannier (货篮) bags for camping vacations.(但混合动力自行车的车架通常更耐用,适合多天的长途旅行,因为它们可以承受额外的行李重量,比如露营度假用的货篮包。)”
根据首段“Road bikes are all about speed and performance, aiming to be the quickest bike possible. Hybrid bikes take characteristics from both road and mountain bikes. Is one better than the other? We’ll unpack everything there is to know about them and how they differ.(公路自行车都是关于速度和性能,旨在成为最快的自行车。混合动力自行车兼有公路自行车和山地车的特点。一个比另一个好吗?我们将揭开关于它们的一切,以及它们的不同之处。)”以及文章的标题“Road Bike Vs Hybrid Bike – Choosing the Right Bike(公路自行车Vs混合动力自行车——选择合适的自行车)”可知,本文介绍了公路自行车和混合动力自行车的特点,以便消费者选择合适的自行车,所以本文的目的是关于如何在两种自行车之间进行选择的指南。故选C项。
(C)
When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories , the memories they’ re referring to are usually episodic memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life.
Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know.
Usually, the recall of episodic and semantic memories has easily identifiable triggers (诱因) in our context. Context includes our physical surroundings as well as the aspects of our mental state, such as thoughts and feelings. For example, you’re eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. When someone says the word “Oscar”, the name of the movie that won the Oscar recently flashes in your mind. That belongs to semantic memory.
These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they’ve been called mind-pops (闪念).
Mind-pops shouldn’t be confused with insight, which is the sudden pop ping up of a potential solution to a complex problem in the mind. Thus, mind- pops are semantic or autobiographical memories that suddenly flash in our minds without an easily identifiable trigger.
Mind-pops may comprise any piece of information, be it an image, a sound, or a word. They’re often experienced by people when they’re engaged in mundane tasks like mopping the floor or brushing teeth. Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind. For example, you’re reading a book, and suddenly, the image of your school corridor pops into your mind for no reason. What you were reading or thinking at the time had no connection to your school.
I do experience mind-pops from time to time. But when I tried to look for cues in my con text that may have triggered my mind-pops, I would fail. Maybe such mind-pops are completely random.
43.Which of the following might be episodic memory?
A.You predict a heavy rain is on the way.
B.A good idea flashes into your mind suddenly.
C.A song reminds you of your middle school graduation.
D.You think of a round shape when hearing the word “circle”.
44.What is a feature of mind-pops?
A.They have obvious triggers. B.They come out without warning.
C.They appear in the form of images. D.They often bring long- lasting memories.
45.What does the underlined word “mundane” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Careful. B.Dull. C.Necessary. D.Challenging.
46.What is the aim of this passage?
A.To explore human inner thoughts. B.To point out the memory formation.
C.To distinguish different memory scenes. D.To explain some similar memory phenomena.
根据第三段“For example, you’re eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. (例如,你在餐馆吃一道菜,它的味道让你想起了你妈妈以前做过的类似的菜。这就是情景记忆.)”可知,情景记忆就是类似的物质环境和精神状态引起我们曾经的记忆,所以C项“一首歌让你想起中学毕业”属于情景记忆的范畴。故选C项。
44.细节理解题。根据第四段“These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they’ve been called mind-pops (闪念). (这些记忆在我们的环境中有明显的触发点,但有时,在我们脑海中闪现的记忆没有可识别的触发点。它们似乎不知从哪里在我们脑海中闪过;因此,它们被称为闪念。)”可知,闪念是在脑海中闪现的记忆,没有可识别的触发点,突然在我们脑海中闪过。故选B项。
45.词句猜测题。根据画线词后面的例子“like mopping the floor or brushing teeth (从事拖地或刷牙)”以及“Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind (这些平凡无奇的日常往往会激发我们的思想)”可知,刷牙、拖地是单调的日常工作,由此推断B选项词义与画线词词义接近。故选B项。
根据第一段“When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories , the memories they’ re referring to are usually episodic (情景的) memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life. (当人们说突然想起旧记忆时,他们指的通常是情景记忆。顾名思义,这种类型的记忆存储了我们生活中的场景。)”以及第二段“Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know. (另一种可以被突然记住的记忆是语义记忆。我们的语义记忆是我们知识的仓库,包含了我们所知道的所有事实。)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了什么是情景记忆、语义记忆、闪念及其与顿悟的区别等,由此推断文章的目的是解释一些相似的记忆现象。故选D项。
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
A.Consequently, passengers know when the car is about to turn, speed up or brake.
B.A main feature Uber plans to integrate is to automatically use vibrating and moving scats.
C.It’s been criticized for years that drivers allow themselves to be distracted by family or work issues.
D.Instead. its operating mechanism is to provide distractions and learned responses to motion.
E.With the emergence of autonomous driving technology, rider attention can be focused on alternative activities.
F.A computer screen built into the instrument panel simultaneously records the car’s progress as a luminous dot (光点).
Uber Wants to Cure Travel Sickness
Uber is working on a system, described as “sensory stimulation system for autonomous vehicles” to prevent travel sickness in cars, which it sees as a barrier to the adoption of self-driving automobiles, stopping people from doing other things as they are ferried to their destination. 47 . Additional functions include the flow of air targeting the face or other part of the body, and light bars and screens to prevent passengers from feelings travel sick.
48 . Their work, socializing reading, writing, task-based activities and the like can make them feel dizzy. As the driverless vehicles travels along an inputted route, motion sickness can result from the perception of motion by a rider not corresponding to the rider’s balance and spatial orientation senses.
Uber’s plan is to have a system that can stimulate the occupants as the self-driving car makes turns, brakes or speeds up, not necessarily to imitate the experience of being outside the car. 49 . For instance, the seats could vibrate when braking, or “a number of motors can control pitch (频) and roll of the seat” in response to turns.
Uber also plans to use airflow in the cabin to provide passive stimulation: “when the autonomous vehicle is about to brake, the sensory stimulation system can use the airflow system to modify airflow within the cabin — including speed direction, temperature, timing, and height”.
Additionally, “light bars” positioned in the ceiling or doors, or screens fitted around the cabin, show riders the vehicles’ intentions. 50 .
Whether the system will actually work remains to be seen, but the benefits of having a computer driver instead of a human is to be expected. Computer will know when it is about to perform certain steps and be able to time the anti-sickness system accordingly.
【答案】47.B 48.E 49.D 50.A
47.根据前文“Uber is working on a system, described as “sensory stimulation system for autonomous vehicles” to prevent travel sickness in cars, which it sees as a barrier to the adoption of self-driving automobiles, stopping people from doing other things as they are ferried to their destination.(优步正在开发一种被称为“自动驾驶汽车感官刺激系统”的系统,以防止车内的旅行病,优步认为这是采用自动驾驶汽车的一个障碍,阻止人们在前往目的地的途中做其他事情)”以及后文“Additional functions include the flow of air targeting the face or other part of the body, and light bars and screens to prevent passengers from feelings travel sick.(附加功能包括针对面部或身体其他部位的气流,以及防止乘客晕车的光条和屏幕)”可知,前文讲述,优步正在开发一种被称为“自动驾驶汽车感官刺激系统”的系统,后文讲述附加功能,所以空处应是主要功能,所以B项“A main feature Uber plans to integrate is to automatically use vibrating (震动的) and moving scats.(优步计划整合的一个主要功能是自动使用振动和移动的座椅)”符合文意。故选B项。
48.根据后文“Their work, socializing reading, writing, task-based activities and the like can make them feel dizzy.(他们的工作、社交、阅读、写作、基于任务的活动等都会让他们感到头晕)”可知,E项“With the emergence of autonomous driving technology, rider attention can be focused on alternative activities.(随着自动驾驶技术的出现,乘客的注意力可以集中在其他活动上)”和后句构成因果关系,后句具体讲述了那些其他活动,以及产生的后果,符合文意。故选E项。
49.根据前文“Uber’s plan is to have a system that can stimulate the occupants as the self-driving car makes turns, brakes or speeds up, not necessarily to imitate the experience of being outside the car.(优步的计划是建立一个系统,在自动驾驶汽车转弯、刹车或加速时刺激乘客,而不一定是模仿在车外的体验)”以及后文“For instance, the seats could vibrate when braking, or “a number of motors can control pitch (频) and roll of the seat” in response to turns.(例如,当刹车时座椅可以振动,或者“一些马达可以控制座椅的俯仰和滚动”以响应转弯)”可知,本段主要讲述,优步准备采取那些措施去解决乘客的不适问题,所以D项“Instead, its operating mechanism is to provide distractions and learned responses to motion.(相反,它的运作机制是提供分心和对运动的学习反应。)”
50.位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Additionally, “light bars” positioned in the ceiling or doors, or screens fitted around the cabin, show riders the vehicles’ intentions.(此外,安装在天花板或车门上的“灯条”,或安装在车厢周围的屏幕,向乘客展示车辆的意图)”可知,A项“Consequently, passengers know when the car is about to turn, speed up or brake.(因此,乘客知道汽车何时要转弯、加速或刹车)”是前文措施的结果,和前文构成因果关系,符合文意。故选A项。
III.Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point( s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
The idea of humans making a new home on Mars is mind-bending enough on the surface. What's even wilder is that human colonization of the Red Planet's harsh and exotic atmosphere — if we can achieve it — might accelerate our species' evolution. "Given how different the Martian environment is, you'd expect strong natural selection," says Scott Solomon, an evolutionary biologist at Rice University in Houston.
Mars sits about 34 million miles away from Earth, and Earthlings still face plenty of obstacles before we even reach it. But if we do (somehow) get to Mars and establish a colony of permanent residents, factors like comparatively higher radiation, lower gravity and a vast change in lifestyle could prompt significant evolutionary changes in our bodies-much more quickly than those that have transpired on our home planet.
There is a determining factor in this potential shift, which would vastly influence how rapidly humans would adapt to new condition. If humans moved back and forth between Earth and Mars as often as every generation or two, new introduction of Earth-born human genes might low the effects of certain genetic mutations By contrast, remaining on a Martian colony for longer stretches could quicken that change.
More tense radiation on Mars could provoke elevated rates of genetic mutations in humans born there. And any favorable mutations that help humans better cope with conditions on Mars may be inherited by future generations.
Survival of the fittest is a key concept in evolution. But based on major advances in gene-editing tools like CRISPR, it's possible that humans on Mars may not need to leave evolution up to nature. Solomon says we currently have the tools to help support potential Mars residents." It could potentially be a powerful tool to make changes so people could survive and be appted to the Martain environment," Solomon says.
51.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The passage discusses the potential for human evolution to accelerate on Mars due to its harsh environment. Factors like higher radiation and lower gravity could cause significant genetic changes, especially if humans remain on Mars for extended periods without returning to Earth. Advances in gene-editing technology might also play a role in helping humans adapt to Martian conditions.

【答案】11.D 12.A 13.D 14.A
W: I suppose the first question I have to ask you, Alan, is: what is a Best Boy?
M: Well, the title is an American term used to describe the assistant to the man who works with the cameramen and the electricians on a film to make sure that the film is properly lit.
W: So how do you spend your time?
M: Basically what I do is work between the electrical department and production. I deal with the companies where the lights come from. And I’m also there on the film set, making sure that everything runs smoothly, that the lighting is set up when the camera crew arrives to shoot the film, and then I also help with the budget—we have to do timesheets, things like that. It’s mostly paperwork really.
W: When did you start working in the industry?
M: About fifteen years ago. I’d been an electrician and my first few film jobs were basic electrical ones, then I moved over to this.
W: It sounds a rather complicated job to me.
M: No, not really. I’ve never had to do anything out of the ordinary. But filming on location does make things more intense — there’s less control than in the studio and you can have problems with the weather. On my latest film, we were working in the hills and it would take us ages to get the equipment up there. But I enjoyed it. It was a challenge.
W: Where do you see yourself in the future? What would promotion be for you?
M: I like it where I am. I like working behind the scenes and seeing how the production works. There are enough challenges in the present job for me. The more experience you get, the more you worry whether you’ve got things to the right stage at the right time or not. You can’t just go home and switch off. But getting things right is a big satisfaction.

A team of scientists, who have studied the subject of dreams, have come up with some interesting conclusions. Firstly, everybody, without exception, has them. Secondly, dreams can be of practical value, acting as a reminder of things of importance that we need to do in our waking lives. If you dream of the punishment you may receive for not handing in your homework punctually, for example, this may help you to do it on time. Indeed, things we are anxious about in our daily lives often feature in our dreams.
But it is hard to make sense of your dreams if you lack the ability to remember them in the first place. One recommendation is that you should keep a diary and pen by your bed, so you can write down your dreams as soon as they occur. You should also concentrate on three aspects. Firstly, record the strongest emotion in your dream, whether it is fear, anger or whatever. Then write down anything strange or unusual that happened and the names of the people who made an appearance in your dream. This way, according to the experts, you will have a reliable and meaningful dream record, which will make for fascinating reading.

Hi, well, as you know, I’ve been doing a project on co-operatives and their history and what they’re like today. Although farmers and people have always worked together from prehistory onwards, what we know today as co-operatives really got going during the industrial revolution. They were frequently started by workers in situations where perhaps their companies were exploiting them or mistreating them in some way and they were seen as a way of providing 2protection for employees.
The first one to really last and make a go of things was set up in town in the north of England, Rochdale, about a hundred and seventy years ago. The local workers had gone on strike, but then their employer, who ran the local shop, the company shop, took revenge by refusing to sell them food. Rather than starve, they started a co-operative food store whose purpose was to provide basic foodstuffs just so people could survive. The employers in question then went a step further by refusing to sell gas to the striking employees, so because they had no light, the co-operative started selling candles as well, even though that hadn’t been part of their original plan.
Well, the movement was born and there are still co-operatives around today, ones which have been around for more than a hundred years running whole groups of shops in a region or over the whole country or offering banking and insurance. There are also ones which have been started very recently and are involved in all sorts of new technologies such as wind farms or designing internet sites and the like.
Now listen again.
Questions
18. Why did workers frequently start co-operatives during the industrial revolution?
19. Why did workers in Rochdale start the first real cooperative about 170 years ago?
20. What can be learned about today’s co-operatives from the passage?
