Shelby Lattimore works as a math teacher at a school in North Carolina, America. When she discovered some of her students were often absent from school and that some didn’t pay attention in class, she found a clever way to encourage them not only to attend school but also to get excited about learning. She created a programme called “My Class Economy (经济)”.
At the start of each month of the school year, Lattimore’s students have to pay rents (租金) for their class desks and chairs. They can make money by doing different jobs around the classroom. They can be a door holder, a line leader, a cleaner or the class pet helper. They get paid every two weeks, and how much money they can get depends on which job they take on. Of course, if they act properly in class or make progress in study, they can also get money. It’s worth (值得) mentioning that Lattimore collects and gives play money instead of real money. After the students get the play money, they can use it to buy rewards once a month, such as candies, free time and a change of seats. They can even pay $30 to be the teacher for a day. But if they spend too much, they’ll experience a money shortage until their next pay day. And if they are absent from school or late for class, they will be fined.
The programme works. Lattimore’s students have changed a lot since the programme started. “They all like it,” Lattimore said. “They not only learn math, but also learn about the value of money.”

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, to find a place to lay their eggs. In this process, they help eat insects and keep the waterways clean. However, there is one problem. They have to wait at the Weerdsluis lock (水闸), which is usually closed at this time of year.
After knowing that, local ecologist (生态学家) Mark van Heukelum decided to help the fish. He learned that the lock keeper didn’t know when there were fish waiting at the lock. Mark set up an underwater camera at the lock and connected it to a computer and an online doorbell. When someone sees fish waiting to pass, they press the doorbell and the lock keeper will open the lock to let the fish through.
But Mark couldn’t keep watching the doorbell day and night. He reached out to the public to see how many people would like to lend a hand. He was surprised. In its first spring in 2021, the Fish Doorbell was run more than 100,000 times by people all around the world.
This spring, people’s interest didn’t seem to wane (减弱). On the website, the number of visitors was always over 100 and could go as high as 500, depending on the time of day. Many hands make light work. Politely holding a door open for the friends of humans in the water is a feel-good act of kindness.
Some people are thinking of ways to automate (使自动化) the doorbell. But Mark thinks differently, “I hope when spring comes, people will be excited to ring the doorbell again.”
