B I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort. One can assume that I didn’t own many old books. I had merely a few here and there that my parents had gifted me, but nothing too special. In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. Just then, I found my parents’ old copies of the entire Harry Potter book series. Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books. However, I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that if I wanted to read the series, I would have to read my parents’ copies. And so began the terrible journey of reading seven old books. When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted the entire Harry Potter bookshelf in my room. Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now. 4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs? A. She felt uneasy about owning old books. B. She was on bad terms with her parents. C. She grew fondness for reading classics. D. She was often gifted old books by her parents. 5. How did the author feel when seeing her parents’ Harry Potter series in the fourth grade? A. Confused B. Scared C. Discouraged. D. Astonished. 6. What does the author mean by saying “I was kind of a changed woman” in paragraph 3? A. She started to enjoy reading fictional books. B. She began to ignore the appearance of the books. C She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read. 7. What is the best title of the text? A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books C. My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey With Old Books C Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager. “I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’ ” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.” Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits (轨道). Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as pop culture and sex would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood. But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.” Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and at more democratic (民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now,” explains Mr. Ballmer. 8. What doesn’t the underlined word “gulf” means in the first paragraph? A. difference. B. argument. C. balance. D. achievement. 9. What is the change in today’s parent-child relationship? A. There is less parent-child activities. B. There is more respect for parents from children. C. There is a new equality between parents and children. D. There is more strictness and authority on the part of parents. 10. Which word best describes Kerrie’s attitude to the change of the parent-child relationship? A. Interested. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned. 11. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with. B. To discuss the development of the parent-child relationship. C. To suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship. D. To solve the problem of the parent-child relationship. D Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day. World Tuberculosis (肺结核) Day is on Saturday March 24th. Tuberculosis was once terribly fashionable. Dying of “consumption” seems to have been a favorite activity of 19th-century artists, which has, however, been neglected of late. Researchers in the field never tire of pointing out that TB kills a lot of people. According to figures released earlier this week by the World Health Organization, 1.6 million people died of the disease in 2005, compared with about 3m for AIDS and 1m for malaria. But it receives only a fraction of the research budget devoted to AIDS. America’s National Institutes of Health, for example, spends 20 times as much on AIDS as on TB. Nevertheless, everyone seems to be getting in on the TB-day act this year. The Global Fund, an international organization responsible for fighting all three diseases but best known for its work on AIDS, claims that its anti-TB activities since 2002 have saved the lives of over 1m people. The World Health Organization has issued a report that contains some good news. Although the number of TB cases is still rising, the rate of illness is growing only because the population itself is going up. Even drug companies are involved. Eli Lilly announced a $50m boost to its MDRTB Global Partnership. MDR stands for multi-drug resistance, and it is one of the reasons why TB is back in the spotlight. Careless treatment has caused drug-resistant problems to evolve all over the world. The course of drugs needed to clear the disease completely takes six months, and persuading people to stay that course once their symptoms have gone is hard. Unfortunately, those infected with MDR have to be treated with less effective, more poisonous and more costly drugs. The other reason TB is back is its relationship to AIDS. AIDS does not kill directly. Rather, HIV weakens the body’s immune system and exposes the sufferer to secondary infections. Of these, TB is one of the most serious. Some anti-TB drugs interfere with the effect of some anti-HIV drugs. Conversely, in about 20% of cases where a patient has both diseases, anti-HIV drugs make the tuberculosis worse. The upshot is that 125 years after human beings worked out what caused TB, it is still a serious threat. 12. The first sentence “Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day.” means __________. A. every dog enjoys good luck or success sooner or later B human beings can deal with problems caused by disease C tuberculosis becomes a serious infection disease D. people attach importance to tuberculosis recently 13. By referring to AIDS in Paragraph 2, the author intends to show _________. A. the US government is reluctant to spend millions of dollars on tuberculosis B. the death rate of AIDS is higher than that of tuberculosis C. the officials don’t pay much attention to the research of tuberculosis D. compared with AIDS, tuberculosis can be cured effectively 14. Which of the following is best defines the word “upshot” (Para 5)? A. Outcome. B. Reason. C. Achievement. D. Project. 15. Which of the following proverbs is closest in meaning to the message the passage tries to convey? A. Forgive and forget. B. Forgotten, but not gone. C. When the wound is healed the pain is forgotten. Our mother Clare was the heart of our family. She was the type of mom who always put our needs first, sacrificing her own desires for our happiness. Growing up, we established a beautiful tradition that each year, we would surprise her with a special gift to show our gratitude and love. This year, Oscar came up with a brilliant idea: “What if we made her a long and beautiful dress?” she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. As I recalled, since the day we were born, Mom hadn’t bought herself a beautiful new dress, so I knew we had to make this year’s surprise truly special. With that thought in mind, we set to work. I grabbed my drawing book and began to design, my pencil dancing across the page; while Oscar with her perfect sense of measurement and love for sewing. she got down to handling the cloth. Her eyes shone with concentration, while I focused on the beautiful patterns on the dress. Soon, the dress began to take shape — it was such a magnificent long dress, and we carefully wrapped it in gift paper. But then came the question: where to hide it for the surprise to be revealed at dinner? We put our heads together, brainstorming the perfect hiding spot. “Nobody would think to look in my bedroom closet.” I suggested Oscar giggled, nodding in agreement, but we both neglected the fact that our two playful cats could be a problem. Finally, the moment arrived. After dessert, I exchanged a knowing look with Oscar. It was time to unveil our creation! We dashed to our bedroom together, my heart pounding in my chest as I flung open the closet door. “NO” I yelled, seeing our cats dashed out of the closet. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Where did you get such a beautiful scarf?” Mom asked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5 CCACC 6-10 BCABC 11-15 BACCB 16-20 BACAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 南京市第二十九中学高一摸底测试英语学科 满分:150分 时间:120分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题:每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read. 7. What is the best title of the text? A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books C. My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey With Old Books 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段“I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort.(我过去讨厌旧书。不过,我说的“旧书”并不是指经典作品。我指的是那些有黄页、断了书脊、散发着木头味的书,你必须小心不要把它们弄破,因为它们已经磨损得很厉害了,会给你带来严重的不适)”可知,对作者来说,拥有旧书是一件令人不舒服,不自在的事。故选A项。 根据第二段“In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics.(在四年级的时候,我已经准备好去探索一个新的阅读世界,一个超越儿童章节书和青少年主题的世界)”以及“Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books.(从视觉上看,父母的书是我最可怕的噩梦。我记得我当时对自己说,我是不可能读懂这些书的)”可推知,作者在看到这套书的破旧样子后感到很沮丧。故选C项。 【6题详解】 句意猜测题。根据第三段“I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted the entire Harry Potter bookshelf in my room.(我仍然非常不喜欢旧书,但是整个哈利波特系列的情节吸引了我,我几乎完全忘记了这些书的样子。最后,我把房间里的整个哈利·波特书架都放满了)”可知,作者之所以说自己有点变了是因为她开始更多地关注书的内容而忽略书的品相了。故选B项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“I used to hate old books.(我过去讨厌旧书)”以及最后一段“Now, I love old books.(现在,我喜欢旧书)”可知,本文主要讲述作者对旧书的感情变化。 C Sometimes, when Mr. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第一段“‘There was just a complete gap in taste.’ Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits (轨道).(‘他们的品味完全不同。’音乐并不是唯一的并不是gulf。从服装、发型到活动和期望,前几代的父母和孩子往往在不同的轨道上运行)”可推知,前几代的父辈与子女有代沟,具体表现在音乐、服装、发型、活动和期望。gap为关键词,意为“隔阂,差距”,根据语境,gulf意为“区别,分歧”,故选A项。 9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.(今天,代沟没有消失,但在许多家庭中正在缩小)”,第三段第一句“But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.(但家庭专家警告说,这种新的平等也可能导致对父母的尊重减少)”中的new equality可知,当今的亲子关系中,代沟越来越小,关系越来越平等,故选C项。 根据第三段最后一句“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents(在这种变化的过程中,父母有很多困惑)”可知,Kerrie对这种关系的变化有些担心,故选D项。 根据第二段第一句“Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.(今天,代沟没有消失,但在许多家庭中正在缩小)”可知,父母和子女的关系在发展。根据第三段最后一句“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.(在这种变化的过程中,父母之间有很多困惑)”可知,当今父母在亲子关系上有困惑。第四段第一句“Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. (家庭研究人员为这些不断变化的角色和态度提供了各种各样的原因)”,阐述了当今亲子关系的变化的原因。所以文章的目的是要探讨亲子关系的发展变化。故选B项。 D Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day. A. every dog enjoys good luck or success sooner or later B. human beings can deal with problems caused by disease C. tuberculosis becomes a serious infection disease D. people attach importance to tuberculosis recently 13. C. When the wound is healed, the pain is forgotten. D. Every dog is brave at his own door. D 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第一段最后一句“World Tuberculosis Day is on Saturday March 24th.”(世界防治肺结核日在3月24日(周六)。),人们专门将特定的一天定为世界防治肺结核日,可推知“Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day. ”这句话意指近年来,人们足够重视肺结核病。故选D项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。第二段中的“1.6 million people died of the disease in 2005, compared with about 3m for AIDS and 1m for malaria”(2005年,160万人死于肺结核,300万人死于艾滋病,100万人死于疟疾)的数据说明,肺结核病也是十分严重的,但根据第二段倒数第二、三句“But it receives only a fraction of the research budget devoted to AIDS. America’s National Institutes of Health, for example, spends 20 times as much on AIDS as on TB.”(但是肺结核病的研究经费仅为艾滋病研究经费的一部分。 A. Outcome结果;B. Reason理由;C. Achievement成就;D. Project项目。最后一段中的“Conversely, in about 20% of cases where a patient has both diseases, anti-HIV drugs make the tuberculosis worse.”(相反,那些同时患有两种疾病的患者中,有20%的病例是抗艾滋病药物使肺结核病病情恶化。) 而“upshot”后面的“125 years after human beings worked out what caused TB, it is still a serious threat”(从人类发现肺结核的成因到现在已经125年了,肺结核病仍然对人类造成严重的威胁。) 故选A项。 Summer is the best time for kids to explore nature. Bug bites will eventually disappear. A“Cuts and broken bones heal in time.(伤口和骨折会及时愈合。)” 故选A。 【19题详解】 下文“When kids are involved in planning, they’re more eager to participate, and they might have some surprising interests that you don’t even know about!(当孩子们参与计划时,他们更渴望参与,他们可能会有一些你甚至不知道的令人惊讶的兴趣!)” D“Sit down with your kids and brainstorm ways of doing so.(和你的孩子一起坐下来,集思广益地想办法)”与下文构成递进关系,符合题意。故选D。 【20题详解】 下文“Instead, consider it a welcome escape for yourself as well.(相反,你也可以把它当作一种受欢迎的逃避方式。)” F“Getting kids close to nature should not feel like a trouble in any way.(无论如何,让孩子们接近大自然都不应该觉得是个麻烦。)” My wife and I parked by a rough path the same time as a young man covered in tattoos (纹身). ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “NO!” I yelled, seeing our cats dashed out of the closet. My eyes widened in horror as I saw the gift-wrapped dress on the floor, torn and tattered. Oscar’s face paled as we both stared at the ruined surprise. Tears welled up in my eyes. How could this have happened? But there was no time to wallow in disappointment. We had to think fast. “Where did you get such a beautiful scarf?” Mom asked. I looked at Oscar, panic-stricken. Then, on the spur of the moment, I grabbed the torn pieces of fabric and held them up. “Mom, this was supposed to be a dress for you. We made it with all our love. But the cats got to it.” Mom’s eyes filled with emotion. She took the pieces from me and hugged us both. “This is the most beautiful ‘scarf’ I’ve ever seen. It’s filled with your love and that’s all that matters.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①看到:see/witness ②.发生:happen/take place ③.抓住:grab/capture 情绪类 ①.失望地:in disappointment/in despair ②.充满了情感:be filled with emotion/be full of emotion 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
