This is because studies suggest that 10,000 steps a day is enough to help us stay healthy and live longer. However, new study says just 4,000 steps a day could be the magic number for us to live well into old age. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine analyzed (分析) 17 studies that looked at how far people walked during the week. The scientists found that 4,000 steps a day reduced the risk of dying from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other life-threatening conditions. The leading researcher Dr. Martin said 4,000 steps was about a 30- to 45-minute walk, or about three to four kilometers. The study is published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiolgy. The research examined health and exercise data from more than 225000 adult participants (参与者) worldwide over seven years. They had an average age of 64. Some of them were in good health, while others suffered from heart problems. Dr. Martin found that 4,000 steps was helpful, and that it was a minimum amount. He said, “I wouldn’t want people to look at that as a magic number. More is better,” He added that walking an additional 1,000 steps a day was linked with a 15 percent lower risk of earlier death. Both at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital, Jack had to wear white clothes. One evening at the hospital, Jack had to help to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. I have travelled to many cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. My favorite one is Shanghai, which is the New York City of the East. I love the historic city of Xi’an too, which I have visited twice. Guangzhou is the manufacturing center and I am attracted by the delicious foods in this big city. Shenzhen, another city in southern China, feels similar to Los Angeles in California. For me, China is not that far apart as I read Chinese books and know many well-known Chinese people, for example, Chinese President Xi Jinping, the science fiction (科幻小说) writer Liu Cixin, and superstar CoCo Lee. Modern China is a window for me to learn more about China. Your stories about Chinese culture, people’s life, current events, business, economics, history and politics are all interesting and attractive. All in all, Modern China is a high-quality magazine, but I think Modern China should also touch upon some issues or problems facing Chinese society. For example, environmental and economic problems can also be discussed so that foreigners can know what the real challenges are and what have been done or will be done to make a change. In this way, your magazine will provide more useful information and attract more readers. Wesley Wilson U. S. A. 30. What do we know about Wilson from the text? A. He is an English teacher B. All he knew was that some materials would be needed first. He began to gather peach baskets from his neighbors. He fixed these peach baskets to the gym balcony (阳台) at school. The aim of the game was simple. Players would try to throw a soccer ball into the peach basket on the balcony. That is how the sport of basketball was born. The first game of basketball was different from games today. Each team had 9 players during the first game. Today there are 5 players on each team. The students had to stop playing when they made a basket. This is because the ball was still in the basket! The school doorkeeper had to climb a ladder and take the ball out. Naismith realized that he could cut the bottom off the peach baskets. This would make the ball fall through the basket and the players could keep playing. Basketball was created with rules that players must follow. Naismith made a list of 13 basic rules. These rules were put to the test during the very first game of basketball in 1891. The game was played by Naismith’s students and ended with a final score of 1-0. A young man named William R. Chase made the lone basket of the game. Due to my work. He wanted to make a new game for his students, but didn’t know what the game would be. He was the first player to ever score in a game of basketball. 30. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? A. There were 9 players on each team at one time. B. The first game of basketball was exciting. C. The nice doorkeeper helped Naismith. D. Basketball has changed overtime. 31. Naismith cut the bottom off the peach baskets so that ______. A. the doorkeeper would not fall off the ladder B. the judge could record each ball quickly C. the players could score more easily D. the players could go on playing 32. What does the underlined word “lone” in the last paragraph mean? A. Wrong. B. Only. C. Additional. D. Easy. 33. The text is written to introduce ______. A. the birth of basketball B. the life of James Naismith C. the first basketball team D. the rules of basketball 30. 31.答案:D。 分析:根据文中 “Naismith realized that he could cut the bottom off the peach baskets. This would make the ball fall through the basket and the players could keep playing.” 32.答案:B。 分析:根据前文 “The game was played by Naismith’s students and ended with a final score of 1 - 0.” 33.答案:A。 (2017年·四川对口高考) 14th February, 2017 Dear Parents, I would like to give you a warm welcome and invite you to our school event on Saturday morning, 25th February.
