Eight fitness exercises you can do at home
Walking
An effective walking workout at home will help to strengthen your legs, while getting some low impact aerobic exercise as well. If you don’t have any stairs available, just walk around the house a few times — it may not be very exciting, but it will do the job!
Jumping jacks
These are always fun, as they bring back memories of being a kid! Who hasn’t done jumping jacks for fun as a child? Well, surprise — they are also great cardio exercises, and good for warming up, too.
Push-ups
These are probably not the most favorite exercise of many people, but while they can be hard to do, you can find easier ways to do them. You don’t need to pretend you’re “Rocky”, and do them with one hand: just do what works for you. Do them on your knees, instead of keeping your legs straight. Or, do them by standing up against a wall. You will build up arm strength and work out muscles in your chest area.
Leg lifts
These are great for building up strength and muscles in your legs. If you find it hard to do the exercises with your legs straight, try bending them slightly.
Crunches
It’s the best exercise for building up and strengthening belly muscles. When you’re just getting started, don’t worry about getting your head all the way up. So long as you’re going up until you feel the stretching of the muscles, you will see some benefit.
Jogging in place
Jogging is a great exercise for your heart. You can jog in place at home while watching TV or listening to music. The only equipment you will require is a good pair of shoes, to eliminate any stress to your legs.
Squats
These are wonderful exercises for your legs and bottoms. You can even just try these by sitting and standing up again from a regular chair, if you’re finding them to be too difficult. As long as you’re able to do a few repetitions, you will provide some benefit to your body.
Dancing
Dancing is a wonderful exercise, which is great for your heart. Not only that, but it can lift your spirits as well, and give your overall feeling a boost.

On that day, New York City experienced a torrential downpour (倾盆大雨). The rain caused the streets to flood and the subway system almost came to a stop as the subway stations were drowned in water. Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour.
Many people who were going to work were trapped and forced to go home. Some battled with fellow New Yorkers to hail a cab (招手叫出租车) or to get on a bus. Still others faced the storm bravely, walking miles to get to work.
I happened to be one of the people on the way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most service had stopped. After making my way through crowds of people, I finally found a subway line that was operating. Determined to get to work, I decided to take the train uptown several stops and then switch back to the downtown train. It was annoyance, but it paid off. However, the train got more packed at each stop. Finally, the train reached my stop.
But the journey was not over yet. I would still have to walk several blocks to get to my office. When I finally got to work, I was completely soaked and left a puddle (水坑) of water everywhere I sat. I was also exhausted (tired out) and discouraged from my commute.
My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off. When it was 5:00 p. m., I was ready to go home. I was about to log off my computer when I received an email from Garth, my Deputy Director:
I would like to thank all those who made the effort and eventually reported to work. It is always reassuring, at times like these, when employees so clearly show their devotion to their jobs. Thank you.
His email was short, but I learned more from that brief message than I ever did from a textbook. The email taught me that a few words of appreciation can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the transit troubles had made me miserable. But Garth’s words immediately invigorated me and put a smile back on my face. As a matter of fact, his email made the whole subway painful experience all worthwhile.
The day may have been one of the darkest days in New York City history, but it was one of the brightest days in my life thanks to Garth.

The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY (准确性). Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
If you do not use your English beyond the classroom, you will forget what English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.
12. What is most probably the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To improve your reading.
B. To improve your listening.
C. To improve your spoken English.
D. To improve your vocabulary.
13. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that______.
A. don’t be fluency. Just be accuracy
B. don’t be nervous, don’t be shy. Just write!
C. don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Just speak!
D. don’t be shy, don’t be fluency. Just listen and write!
14. The last paragraph is possibly close to the meaning of “_____”.
A. more hurry, less speed B. better late than never
C. silence is gold D. practice makes perfect
15. The text is most probably taken from a ______.
A. teacher’s diary B. report on study
C. sports newspaper D. movie magazine
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

As I entered my freshman year of college, I happily moved into my dormitory (宿舍).
My roommate, Alex, welcomed me with a half-hearted smile. We exchanged pleasantries (寒暄), but something felt strange. Maybe it was the way Alex’s eyes looked around the room, sizing me up. Or perhaps it was just the tension (紧张局面) that hung in the air.
Alex and I were as different as storms and sunny days. I was an early riser, while Alex burned the midnight oil. I preferred a tidy space, while Alex kept things everywhere. Our disagreements grew from the dirty floor to late-night music.
One evening, after a long tiring day of classes, I returned to find my favorite cup broken on the kitchen floor. Alex stood there, looking guilty (内疚的). I felt very unhappy and started shouting at Alex. Words flew like arrows (箭), hurting each other’s feelings. Hate and anger filled the room. “I can’t take this anymore!” I shouted, and then hurried out of the dormitory, leaving Alex alone. Days turned into weeks, and Alex and I continued to be like strangers sharing the same space. I dealt with my studies and spent more time outside the dorm. Alex, on the other hand, seemed to stay in his own world. We almost had no communication with each other.
But then, one rainy afternoon, I found Alex sitting on his bed, looking out of the window. His eyes were red.
“Look, Alex began, “I know we’re different. But maybe we can find a middle ground.” Then he handed me a fresh cup of tea. “For the broken cup,” he said. I accepted it, touched by his friendliness. “And for the sleepless nights,” I agreed.

【答案】 We started small. Although we had different habits and different lifestyles, we were trying to work together. After Alex offered me a fresh cup of tea, I forgave him for his behavior, too. He was also trying to adjust his schedule, and we eventually found the middle ground, where two of us stayed out of each other’s way. Although our relationship was still relatively stiff, at least there was no conflict.
The real turning point came when Alex fell ill. It was a rainy night, and Alex suddenly had a fever. He was lying in bed in pain, coughing. Seeing him like this, I greeted him with great concern, “Are you okay? Alex, do you want me to go to the hospital with you?” He said that it didn’t matter, but later he was in a coma with a high fever. I was very worried, so I took him to the hospital and accompanied him to see the doctor. The next morning, he woke up and he looked at me. He said he was sorry because we had so many misunderstandings and conflicts before and hoped that we could get along well. He also thanked me for taking care of him last night. I replied that it didn’t matter. Later we became good friends. Through this incident, also learned the importance of tolerance and patience.

Dancing
Dancing is a wonderful exercise which is great for your heart.

Public schools in Washington D. C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion (激情). For them, it’s important that students have a joyful experience with music.
The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.
“I have been a musician all my life,” says Charles West. “I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. I played in an army band.”
Larry Jernigan’s musical interests are varied. “I was formerly trained in the piano and the guitar. The alto sax and the flute, I picked up while working here.”
In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own.
Charles West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it will enrich other areas of their lives. “I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,” he says. “They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.”
But Charles West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.
“This instant age has taken away from the sit-down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence and it takes time.”
Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students’ performances.
