One day in the 1940s, he was walking his dog in a forest. Lots of burrs (带刺的小果实) stuck to his trousers and he found it hard to get them off. What made the burrs stick so well? When George got home, he looked at them carefully. He found that each burr had many tiny hooks (挂钩). These hooks could hold onto anything, such as clothes, animals, or even human hair. “Nature is a great engineer!” he thought. “Maybe I can make a new fastener (紧固件) with tiny hooks.” George decided to weave (编织) tiny hooks on one piece of cloth. By pressing the two pieces together, they would stick to each other. However, it was very hard to make these tiny hooks. They had to be strong enough to stick to each other. They also needed to be practical, so that the user could pull on them to get them off the hooks. George used nylon fibers (尼龙纤维) to make the hooks. After years of hard work, he was able to weave hundreds of tiny hooks onto small pieces of cloth. He set up the Velcro Company in 1952 for making these fasteners. In the 1960s, Americans started to use these fasteners on their spaceships. The fasteners soon became popular and people began calling them Velcro. Today, you can find Velcro on your school bag, shoes, and almost everywhere else! 27.What does George think of nature? A.It is a hero. B.It is an artist. C.It is an engineer. Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be right in front of your eyes. He is talking about a simple pair of glasses. Modern eye glasses were invented around 1,000 years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses were invented, writers, scientists and teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work. Glasses meant that people could work in their old age. It is a traditional folk holiday focusing on good health and long life. Let’s take a look at some keywords related to this festival. Nine is an important number in Chinese culture because its pronunciation means “long” in Chinese. According to the Book of Changes (《易经》), the number six is considered yin while nine is yang. The ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the Chinese calendar has something interesting—two nines, so the day is given the Chinese name “Chongyang”. When it comes to the Double Ninth Festival, two important plants, the cornel(茱萸) and chrysanthemum, have to be talked about. Cornel, famous in traditional Chinese medicine, is widely planted in the north and south of China. Ancient people believed that wearing the cornel on this day could help stop illness and keep away from the bad things. They also believed that the chrysanthemum could drive away bad luck and stop one from getting a cold in late autumn. So, drinking chrysanthemum wine has always been a traditional custom at this festival. As times change, the festival has been given more meaning. In 1989, the Chinese government set it as a day for the elders, to call on all to care about and love them, so as to build a beautiful, age-friendly society. 35.According to the passage, the Double Ninth Festival carries people’s wishes for a healthy and long life. 36.The Book of Changes introduces how the Double Ninth Festival gets its Chinese name. 37.Traditionally, people drink wines with cornel and chrysanthemum on the Double Ninth Festival. 38.From the second box, we can know why cornel and chrysanthemum are symbols of the Double Ninth Festival. 39.People have had the tradition to show the love and care to the elders for thousands of years on the Double Ninth Festival. D Let’s look at two old but popular inventions we use in our daily lives. Band-Aids (创可贴). 40 The idea came to him by accident. Dickson’s wife often cut her fingers in the kitchen. At that time, gauze (纱布) and adhesive tape (胶带) didn’t come together. People had to cut them to the right size. 41 So he put a piece of gauze on the center of a piece of adhesive tape. 42 Later it became very popular all around the world. Bubble gum (泡泡糖). Bubble gum was invented by accident, too. In 1928, American gum company worker (工人) Walter E. Diemer tried new chewing gum recipes (口香糖配方) 43 But Diemer found that the gum he made was easy to blow. He blew a bubble and then saw the possibilities. He took some of his new gum to a shop and it was sold out in a single afternoon. 44 A.Dickson found they were always too big and soon fell off. B.Chewing gum had already been invented more than half a century before then. C.Dickson was deeply influenced by his wife. D.This kind of new gum was sold out during the day. E.The first Band-Aid was made by American Earle Dickson in 1921. F.Since then, Dubble Bubble—the first brand (牌子) of bubble gum has made kids happy all around the world.
