Stephen Cheatley, a photographer from the UK, is not. He took a photo of lightning one night on the coast (海岸) of Lancashire. It shows several flashes (闪光) of lightning lighting up the night sky! “The lightning made me [feel like] a [pop star],” Cheatley said. On Nov 10, Cheatley won the Weather Photographer of the Year competition with his photo. There were over 4,000 photos of different weather conditions (情况) in the competition, the BBC reported. For example, one showed heavy fog (雾) over a mountain. There is a saying that bad weather makes good photographs. Weather photographers must be ready to work in all kinds of weather conditions. Their work can sometimes be very dangerous. 1.Is Stephen Cheatley afraid of lightning? A.Yes, he is. B.No, he isn’t. C.It doesn’t say. They don’t keep us warm like our hair, or help us breathe like our nose. So why do we have them at all? Researchers from the University of York in the UK believe that eyebrows helped us communicate better when we were still evolving (进化). Early humans had large brow ridges (眉骨). This helped them show their strength. Later, as the human face evolved to become smaller and flatter, our eyebrows allowed us to express complex (复杂的) emotions, as well as better understand others’ emotions, the Guardian reported. A quick flash of the eyebrows, for example, is a sign that someone is willing to interact (互动) with others, while pulling our eyebrows up in the middle is an expression of sympathy (同情), Penny Spikins from York University told The Daily Telegraph. If you still find this hard to understand, just draw a simple face on a piece of paper and draw a line above the eyes. You can draw lines in different shapes and directions. You will find that it is very easy to show anger, fear, or surprise in a face. But this is not the only purpose of our eyebrows. They can also protect our eyes. Their arched shape can help to move rain or sweat around to the sides of our faces, keeping our eyes dry, the BBC reported. Together with our eyelashes (眼睫毛), eyebrows can also help to keep dust and other things out of our eyes. Some researchers believe that if we didn’t have eyebrows, we would have evolved some other facial feature to perform the same functions (功能). That could make us look quite different. 1.________ can keep people warm. A.Eyebrows B.Hair C.Nose D.Mouth 2.The brow ridges were ________ early. A.large B.thin C.small D.flatter 3.A quick flash of the eyebrows is a sign that ________. A.someone shows their strength B.someone expresses sympathy C.someone wants to interact with others D.someone is surprised 4.How do eyebrows keep our eyes dry? A.They are large and have shadows. B.They move rain or sweat around to the sides of our faces. C.They move dust out of our eyes.
