As part of the post-1970 generation in China, Bai has seen the country’s rapid economic growth (经济增长) during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Thanks to this, people of his generation have had more chances to chase their dreams. “My parents were both farmers and raised five children. We were very poor when I was a child. It wasn’t until the 1990s that our life started to improve,” Bai said. Wanting to change his life, Bai studied hard in high school and got into Henan University in 1998. After graduating (毕业), he became a civil servant (公务员) and had five years of work experience in rural (农村的) areas of Henan. In 2015, the government carried out many policies to lift impoverished (贫困的) rural people out of poverty. Bai helped reduce poverty in Dazhuyuan village in Henan province, hoping to make villagers live a better life. To achieve this goal, Bai and others talked to villagers about job openings and helped them learn farming skills. They also went to more developed areas like Kunshan, Guangzhou and Huizhou, talking with businessmen and government agencies (政府机构) to attract companies (公司) to build factories in the village. Their efforts paid off. In 2015, there were 48 impoverished families in the village. By 2020, Bai and the people he worked with had helped all of them out of poverty. However, Bai knows the work isn’t finished. “We plan to build cultural centers and hold more activities to help villagers, especially the elderly, live richer and happier lives,” he said. 1.
