Four Best Books for Teens
Just as You Are
In this book, psychologist Michelle Skeen and her daughter, Kelly Skeen, offer simple tips to help you overcome feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness, stop comparing yourself to others, and be more open and accepting of all aspects of who you are. You’ll also learn how to be more aware of your thoughts and feelings in the moment using powerful mindfulness tools, and build a plan of action for the future based on your values.
Make Your Bed
According to Admiral William H. McRaven, changing the world can begin with one step: making your bed. In this book, Admiral McRaven shares tales from his life, including his time devoted to the military, providing practical advice, wisdom and words of encouragement to readers of all ages.
Shoot Your Shot
It’s written by Vernon Brundage Jr. in the context of basketball and divided into “quarters”, similar to a basketball game. Throughout the book, readers learn life lessons gained and practiced by some of the greatest athletes, including Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Stephen Curry. Shoot Your Shot aims to encourage readers to find success in anything they do in life, whether it’s athletics, academics, the arts, or something in between.
Never Fight Alone
Sometimes, teens just want to be heard by someone who understands, like some one of their own age. Written by Shelomo Solson, Never Fight Alone consists of 51 inspiring interviews with people — from former professional athletes to authors and teen entrepreneurs — who have faced various life problems, like anxiety, depression, and more. From a young age, Dorothy Jean Tillman excelled in her academic pursuits. By age 7, she was already doing high school work. At that point, she started to take college-level tests and apply the credits toward higher education.
By age 14, Dorothy had obtained an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. And she was a year into launching a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) camp startup, and was looking for funding for the organization. Another inspiration for Dorothy is her grandmother, former Chicago official Dorothy Tillman, who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement.
After graduating from ASU, Dorothy hopes to continue developing her camps and start applying her studies on integrated behavioral health into her work. “There is a potential for franchising (授予特许经营权) the camps one day so more kids gain something,” she says. People all over the world watch the Olympic Games on TV, cheer on their nations’ athletes, and get into the spirit of friendly international competition. Yet how many people know how these games came about and why they were created? Who came up with the idea of an Olympic torch (火炬)? Looking back in time can answer those questions.
The first Olympic Games in recorded history took place in 776 BC on the ancient plains of Olympia in southern Greece. These ancient games took place in a religious festival and were devoted to the Olympian gods. They continued for almost twelve centuries until Emperor Theodosius banned them in AD 393.
It was about 1,500 years after the last Olympics that the ancient games were revived (复兴). Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman devoted to the promotion of physical education, was inspired to create a modern Olympic Games after he visited the ancient Olympic site.
The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896, and were attended by 280 athletes from 12 countries, who competed in 43 events. In 2004, the Olympic Games returned to Greece with nearly 11,000 athletes representing 201 countries.
The first opening ceremony (仪式) was at the London Olympics in 1908. The Olympic torch was lit for the first time at the opening ceremony of the 1936 Games in Germany. The ancient Greeks had a ritual fire for their games, but the idea of lighting a torch in Olympia and relaying it to the site of the games actually belongs to Carl Diem, who was the chief organizer of the Berlin Games.
The games were cancelled three times due to global conflicts. They were not held in 1916 during World War I and in 1940 and 1944 during World War II. The games have continued uninterrupted since 1948. A minor change did take place in 1994 when the timing of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games was changed so that they would not be held in the same year.
8. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To lead in the topic. B. To make a comparison.
C. To provide an example. D. To present an argument.
9. Where can you find the data that best support “the Olympic Games have grown in size”?
A. In paragraph 2. B. In paragraph 4.
C. In paragraph 5. D. In paragraph 6.
10. What mainly caused the interruption of the modern Olympic Games?
A The two world wars. B. Carl Diem’s disapproval.
C. The loss of the Olympic torch. D. The ban from Theodosius.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rules of the Olympic Games. B. The importance of doing sports.
C. The political events of Greece. D. The brief history of the Olympics.

It’s less furry than a traditional companion, but a six-legged Chinese robot “guide dog” could one day help vision-impaired (视觉受损的) people live with more independence, according to its research development team in Shanghai.
The robot dog, which is currently being field-tested, is able to navigate (导航) its physical environment via cameras and sensors, including recognizing traffic light signals, which traditional guide dogs are unable to do.
Roughly the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, it can communicate by listening and speaking with a visually impaired operator with AI-technology integrated in its voice recognition, route planning capabilities and traffic light recognition. It also has six legs, which the researchers say help it walk smoothly and with maximum stability.
Married couple Li Fei, 41, and Zhu Sibin, 42, are among the visually impaired people helping the Jiao Tong University team test the robot using Chinese-language commands. “If this robot guide dog comes onto the market and I could use it, at least it could solve some of my problems in traveling alone,” Li said.
Robot guide dogs are under development in other countries, including Australia and Britain, but China has a critical shortage of traditional guide dogs. “In China, there are just over 400 guide dogs for almost 20 million blind people,” said Professor Gao Feng, the head of the research team at Jiao Tong University’s School of Mechanical Engineering in Shanghai.
There might be tens of millions of people in the world who need guide dogs. Unlike those dogs, which will always be limited in supply due to the natural limitations of breeding and the intense training required, Gao said the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China. “It’s a bit like cars. I can mass-produce them in the same way as cars, so it will become more affordable,” Gao said.
12 Why does the author mention “traffic light signals” in paragraph 2?
A. To predict traffic rules in the future.
B. To demonstrate the function of the robot dog.
C. To stress the importance of obeying traffic rules.
D. To show the advantage of traditional guide dogs.
13. What do we know about the Chinese robot guide dog?
A. It has four legs. B. It is hard to keep stable.
C. It has passed the field test. D. It is wider than an English Bulldog.
14. What is Li Fei’s attitude to the robot dog?
A. Unconcerned. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
15. What do the last two paragraphs try to tell us?
A. It is easy to train traditional guide dogs. B. China has enough traditional guide dogs.
C. Robot guide dogs will have a big market. D. Professor Gao wants to mass-produce cars.

Are you refused when you ask for help from others? The following simple tips will increase people’s acceptance of your request for help.
Demonstrate that you’ve tried to help yourself. People are more willing to help those who have attempted to help themselves first. When asking for help, briefly explain what you’ve tried independently. ____16____. Imagine you’re giving a key point list — and be specific.
____17____. People want to help those who they’re sure will act on the help or ad vice offered. Therefore, when you get help from someone who you expect you’ll ask for help again, make sure they’ re aware that you’ve acted on their prior advice — and appreciated it.
Consider the timing of your request. Here’s a personal example. My family love to ask me for tech support. So I started a policy that tech support requests could only be made from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm each day. ____18____. This system works great for everyone.
Don’t make someone guess what you want. When asking for help, make sure the person knows what you want. The more you practice asking for help in these situations, the easier it will get. Sometimes people are shy about offering help, or are just stuck in their own head and don’t think of offering. ____19____ By asking someone for help, you’re actually giving that person the opportunity to boost their mood.
Make your requests using multiple channels. In customer-service situations, there are multiple options to ask for help. It might be best to use the phone, live chat, secure messaging, a face-to-face appointment or Twitter, depending on the situation. It especially helps not to be scared of using the phone if it is the best option for a particular concern. ____20____.
A Get to the point fast
B. Make a smaller request
C. That way, my workday isn’t disturbed
D. If you don’t succeed at first, hang up and try again
E. You have to try several of them to get what you need
F. Show that you’ve acted on the person’s advice previously
G. Providing help to strangers typically boosts the mood of the helper

“Daddy, I want to ask your permission to study in America,” I said to my father a few months before my graduation from high school. But hardly before I finished, he shouted, “No!”
“But why?” I replied. “If you are worried about money, it will be OK since I have got a scholarship…”
But he refused to give in. At the moment, I didn’t know what to say. For more than two years, I had been working very hard to pass all the necessary examinations. I had not told my father because I wanted to give him a pleasant surprise. I thought he would be very proud of me because it was many of my classmates’ parents’ dream to send their children to study abroad.
“Why do I have to get your permission? I am already 18 and I’m not a kid anymore.” I said angrily and rushed to my bedroom, shutting the door violently. Blinded by anger, I found that I could not stay at my hometown any longer. Late that night, I slipped out of the house and decided to take the bus to the railway station to start my own life as far away from my home as possible.
The bus stop was just two blocks away from my home. When I got there I found that I forgot to take any money with me and missed the last bus. I did not want to go back home, so I sat down on the bench and closed my eyes to have a break.
Suddenly, I was woken up by my phone. I looked around and found the road was deserted and the street was so quiet that I regretted that I had left home in such a hurry. I picked up the phone and answered the phone even without checking the number.
“Have you had a good sleep? It’s going to rain. Shall we go home now?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
It was my father’s voice!

12. Why does the author mention “traffic light signals” in paragraph 2?
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. C
【解析】

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The robot dog, which is currently being field-tested, is able to navigate (导航) its physical environment via cameras and sensors, including recognizing traffic light signals, which traditional guide dogs are unable to do.(这只机器狗目前正在接受实地测试,它能够通过摄像头和传感器在物理环境中导航,包括识别交通灯信号,这是传统导盲犬无法做到的)”可知,作者提到“交通信号灯”是为了说明机器人导盲犬不同于传统导盲犬的功能。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Roughly the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, it can communicate by listening and speaking with a visually impaired operator with AI-technology integrated in its voice recognition, route planning capabilities and traffic light recognition.(它的大小和英国斗牛犬差不多,但比斗牛犬宽一点,它可以通过语音识别、路线规划和红绿灯识别等人工智能技术,与视力受损的操作员进行交流)”可知,中国机器人导盲犬比英国斗牛犬的体型宽一些。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段Li Fei提到的“If this robot guide dog comes onto the market and I could use it, at least it could solve some of my problems in traveling alone(如果这只机器导盲犬上市,我可以使用它,至少它可以解决我独自旅行的一些问题)”可推断,李飞对机器人导盲犬的态度是“支持的”。故选C。
15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“In China, there are just over 400 guide dogs for almost 20 million blind people(在中国,只有400多只导盲犬为近2000万盲人服务)”和最后一段“There might be tens of millions of people in the world who need guide dogs. Unlike those dogs, which will always be limited in supply due to the natural limitations of breeding and the intense training required, Gao said the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China.(世界上可能有数以千万计的人需要导盲犬。
A. Get to the point fast
【答案】16. A 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. E

【20题详解】
根据前文“In customer-service situations, there are multiple options to ask for help. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I got there, I found that I forgot to take any money with me and missed the last bus.

【答案】It was my father’s voice! I rubbed my sleepy eyes and looked around. There, about one hundred meters from the stop stood my father in the shadows. Then I realized that my father had been standing there all the time. Perhaps, he knew it would be useless to argue with his stubborn little girl. What he could do was waiting for my anger to die away. At first, I wanted to ignore him, but his voice sounded so assuring in the frightening quietness of night!
I grabbed my bag and hurried toward him. On the way home, my father explained apologetically that he was caught off guard by the news and that he was very worried about my safety if I would go so far away alone. “Now I have realized that you have grown up and it is time for you to chase your dream. I will give my permission as long as you promise to live on campus and will not slip away when you are angry in the US,” my father said with resignation.
