Our youth group decided to do something nice for our city. We saw a young woman drove to the gas station and parked her car. She didn’t get out of her car. Instead, she began looking through her wallet.
Then she put her hands and head on her steering wheel (方向盘) and began to cry. The leader told us to politely knock on the window and offer a free gas card to her.
Hearing the knock, the lady tried to calm herself down and then rolled down the window. I said to her, “Here is a free twenty-five-dollar gas card for you. We just want you to know that someone loves you.”
The young woman began to cry again. After calming down for the second time, she accepted the gas card and then told us her story. She was a single mom who had been out of a job for a long time. She didn’t have enough money to live but was hopeful about a job interview that day.
In fact, she was on her way to it. Her gas ran out, and she thought she had one last ten-dollar bill in her wallet. But she couldn’t find it. “Boys, you know how badly I need this job,” She looked at us and said. “You have no idea what you have done for me. Thank you so much!”
We went back to the leader and told him what had happened. The leader thought for a moment and then he gave us four more gas cards and a rose to give to the young mom. She was in surprise when we returned with the rose and the cards. “You all have done enough for me. I can’t take anything else from you.” We insisted (坚持), and she finally accepted the gifts.
We have continued the tradition of handing out roses and gas cards for twelve years. The action makes a difference in our lives because we get to take part in something that is bigger than ourselves. If you have a chance, why not have a try?

Scientists from Spain and the Netherlands did a study and discovered that road traffic noise near schools could cause problems for children.
In the study, Maria Foraster and her team worked with 2,680 children aged 7-10 in Spain. They tested the children’s thinking and memory skills by giving them four tests over a year. The researchers (研究员) studied the noise both inside and outside the schools. They also estimated (估算) the noise levels at the children’s homes. Air pollution and some other factors were also considered (考虑).
The results showed that children in noisy schools had a hard time remembering and paying attention to things compared with children in quiet schools. When children were inside the classroom, the traffic noise was an even bigger problem. And noise at home made no difference to children’s learning abilities.
This study is important because many children in the world are exposed to (遭受) traffic noise in schools. The researchers advised that people should do more tests in other places to see if the results are the same for different groups of children. If the answer is yes, this discovery might change the future rules about noise pollution near schools.

Fresh air is very important to human beings and animals. The more cars there are in the street, the more serious the air pollution is. The air pollution does great harm to human beings and it causes breathing problems and even causes cancer.

Second, people should plant more trees and spread the messages about protecting the air. Third, people should go to school or work on foot instead of by car.
We should do everything we can to protect the air!
