The mascots (吉祥物) for the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics (残奥会) have shown up in front of us. They are the Phryges, two Phrygian caps.
The red Phrygian cap is also known as liberty (自由) cap. In old times, it was worn in Phrygia, a place in Türkiye (Turkey’s official name) now. That was how it got its name. During the French revolution (革命), it became a symbol of liberty. Today it is a common symbol for French people. In the Smurfs (《蓝精灵》), a popular French cartoon, every smurf wears a Phrygian cap. An officer of the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics said they didn’t want to choose an animal or other characters. They wanted something that could stand for an “ideal”.
The Paralympic Phryge has a prosthetic leg (假肢) that goes to the knee. Michael Jeremiasz, a gold winner at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, says the prosthetic leg sends an encouraging message to disabled people around the world.
The two mascots share a saying of “Alone we go faster, but together we go further.” They will help people from all over the world know more about the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics.

The Paris Olympic Games took place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, with the Paralympic Games (残奥会) from August 28 to September 8. Unlike in previous (先前的) years, both the Olympic and Paralympic share the same torch design.
The torch, 70cm in height, is made of lightweight shiny steel and stands out for its champagne color (香槟色). The bottom part has a special design that looks like the River Seine, along which the opening ceremony was held.
Mathieu Lehanneur, the designer of the torch, shared that he drew inspiration from three themes of the 2024 Paris Olympics—equality, water, and peace. He explained, “For the first time in its history, the torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics has a perfect balance between non-disabled athletes and para-athletes, which shows us what equality really means. ”
Equality is also a driving force behind the Paris 2024 project. This includes putting the same effort into organizing the Paralympic Games as well as the Olympic Games. Equality can also be seen in the showing of women, with as many women as men competing, which is new in the Games’ history.
“The design of the torch stands for water, which looks like flowing water waves. And it seems to have a vibrating feeling, almost like it’s moving. Peace is shown by the gentleness of the curves (曲线). ” added the designer.
The Paris 2024 torch was made by ArcelorMittal, an official partner of Paris 2024. ArcelorMittal will produce 2,000 torches, at least five times fewer than in previous editions of the Games, in order to reduce the influence of production.
The torch which was poured with the wisdom and effort of French people was lit by the sunlight in Olympia, Greece, on April 16, 2024. After that, it has started a journey through 64 areas of France, including five overseas areas.

It’s official — the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will include breakdancing (霹雳舞), or breaking, as a medal sport. The decision was announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC, 国际奥委会) and the Paris 2024 Organzing Committee.
Surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing were also added to the program. These sports, however, had already been included in the Tokyo 2020 program. Breaking proved to be a great success at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. It will make its senior Olympic Games debut (初次登台) in 2024. All four additions point to the IOC’s desire to attract a younger audience.
As part of its ongoing reforms, the IOC allows host cities to add a few sports that can better connect with its local people. French organizers had pointed to breaking’s widespread popularity in their country.
Gender equality (男女平等) is another main focus of the Paris 2024 program. Tokyo 2020 was the first gender-equal Olympic Games, with an overall 48.8 percent female participation. It will be further increased at Paris 2024, reaching the exact same number of male and female athletes for the first time in Olympic history.
Paris 2024 will also mark a growth in mixed events on the program, compared to Tokyo 2020, from 18 to 22. Weightlifting (举重), however, has seen the biggest cuts to the number of athletes it will have in Paris. The sport should have 120 athletes in Paris, which is less than half of its total at Rio 2016.

Here is some “breaking” news: the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added breaking into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games!
Breaking might be one of the very strange sports to be added to the Games, as it’s often seen as more of an art form than a sport.
The dance style first appeared on the streets of New York in the 1970s. In the 1980s, breaking swept around the world when it was adopted (采用) by pop stars such as Michael Jackson. Young people worldwide were crazy about such kind of dance style.
Over the past few years, there has been a talk that the Olympic Games have become less interesting to young people. The IOC is trying to make the Games more “youthful”, with sports that young people do in their spare time. “We want to take sport to the youth,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
To be added to the Olympics, a sport must be practised by men in at least 75 countries on four continents (洲) and by women in no fewer than 40 countries on three continents. Also, it should be competitive and requires training just like other sports. Dancers need to have strong upper body and core strength. “It’s great that it gives us more recognition as a sport,” said British breakdancer Karam Singh.
A New Olympic Sport—Breaking

二、任务型阅读
