Mr. Lee Kwan Yew was a great Chinese Singaporean politician. He was the first prime minister of Singapore. He said it was important for everybody, especially Singaporeans, 1 more than one language. He spoke English at home with his parents and simple Mandarin(普通话)and Hokkien (福建话) with the children in the village near his home. 5 later he forgot because he didn’t speak these languages in daily life. This is the disappointing part of learning any language. During the war in 1942, he needed to understand the notices Japanese soldiers put up on the walls, so he memorized 2000 Chinese characters in 6 months by 6 alone. He learned to speak Japanese by attending a short course. By the end of the war, he could speak Japanese 7 enough to be an interpreter(口译).
Later he learned to speak Mandarin by asking a neighbor to teach 8 . He tried his best to learn to speak and write because he 9 speak to the Chinese people of Singapore. He practiced for one hour every day during his lunch break. A little while later he learned Hokkien in just 10 weeks, again by using his lunch breaks. He wasn’t afraid to try to speak it, but when he spoke in street meetings, he 11 at by some people because he made mistakes, and his pronunciation was not easy to understand. He told them, “Don’t laugh at me. I have 12 to say to you. Listen and understand what I’m saying!” Soon they stopped laughing at him.
Although he was 13 his 80s, Mr. Lee continued Chinese lessons. He once said, “ Learning foreign languages 14 useful to people 15 they want to be successful in life and in international business.”

三、阅读(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,然后从26~40各题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
(A)
As a teenager, I hated P.E. lessons. I was not very good at sports, and I hated team sports because I always felt like I was letting the rest of the team down. So I hardly did any sports. During these years, I sometimes felt disconnected from my body like only my brain was “me” and my body was just a vehicle(运载工具)for carrying my brain around.
When I started university, I decided to try a kung fu club. To my surprise, I love it! In my first year, most of us were beginners. I used to go twice or three times a week. Because it is not a team sport, I didn’t feel sorry about not being very good. And because it is a combat(格斗)sport, I train in pairs, which means that I get to meet people and talk to them. I also appreciated that the focus of the classes was on getting better at kung fu, instead of exercising to change my body. When I was doing kung fu, my body changed—I got stronger and quicker—but the changes were a side effect of the sport, rather than the goal.
When I moved to Italy this year, I decided to start doing a combat sport again. I joined a local martial arts club and I loved it. We did lots of boxing. I think boxing is like chess, but much faster and much more fun! If my boxing partner tries to hit me hard with his fist, I have to move quickly to avoid him, block or even catch his arm and then throw him to the mat.
When I was a teenager, I would say I just wasn’t a sporty person and I just didn’t like sports and never would. Now I think that everyone should try as many sports as possible because I believe there is something out there for everyone! I feel connected to my body and I am happier and have more energy when I play sports.
26. Why did the writer like kung fu?

A. c-d-e-b-a B. d-c-b-a-e C. c-e-d-a-b D. d-e-b-a-c
29. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. A great sport—kung fu B. My college life
C. Sports change my life D. Make yourself love sports

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well in tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems.
But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who have high score as well, displayed just average collaborative(合作的)skills. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition.” However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society.” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls can be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment can influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication such as class debates, students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.
34.What do Chinese teachers and parents think of working together now?
A.They like it a lot. C.They can’t stand it.
C.They think it’s important. D. They think it’s unnecessary.
35.What can we know from the findings of the survey?
A.Boys are better at working with others than girls.
B.Students who do well in tests are worse at working with others.
C. Collaborative skills are less important than scores for students’ futures.
D. The classroom environment can influence students’ ability to work together.
36.What can be done to improve students’ ability to work together according to the passage?
A.Giving students high scores on every test.
B.Helping students to get used to exam pressure.
C.Making girls work with girls rather than boys.
D.Having more communicative activities in class.
37. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. The popularity of PISA across the world.
B. Chinese students’ ability to work with others.
C. The findings of a survey about working together.
D. The difference between boys and girls in working together.

Dear Matt,
There is too much homework to do in middle school. Sometimes I can’t finish all the homework as scheduled because some of the homework is too difficult for me to work out. It makes me so upset that I am losing interest in studying. What can I do?
Jay
Dear Jay,
Middle school can be difficult. I am sure about it.
First, I’d recommend doing the hardest homework first. Leave the easy part for later. Another way to organize the order of your homework is from your least favourite to your favourite subject. That way, you can use your energy for the most difficult work in the beginning, and as you become more tired or impatient, you’ll be able to finish the rest more quickly and more easily. Saving the best for last is a good tool of motivation(动力) and serves as a nice reward in the end.
Second, do your homework as soon as you can. This is a great way to organize your most disliked tasks in life. If you get your homework done as soon as you get home (or even during a free period in school), you’ll open up the rest of the day for the things you actually want to do. The longer you avoid your homework, the less likely you are to get it done.
Third, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not in this alone. Can you ask your parents, teachers or friends for help? Would a teacher extend the due date if you ask for more time? Can you join-- or organize-- a study group? Whatever you decide, you’ll always find others willing to support you and help you be the best student you can be.
Good luck.
Matt
38.Which statement is true according to the letter written by Matt?
A. You should finish all your homework by yourself and not ask for help.
B. You can do the thing you really want to do before you finish your homework.
C. You’d better finish the easiest part of your homework first to motivate your interest.
D. You’d better leave your favourite homework to do last.
39.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Matt’s letter?
A. The thing you want to do. B. Your homework.
C. Your favourite subject. D. Your study group.
40.The underlined word “extend” in the last paragraph probably means___________.
A. make ... larger B. make ... brighter
C. make ... smarter D. make ... longer
