It was raining hard and nearing dusk. I was late for a date in a nearby city that I knew only by GPS. And my phone had died. I couldn’t figure out how to get where I was going or how to let my friend know I was likely not going to make it there.
I stopped at a McDonald’s in a poor part of town and walked up to a mother and her teen daughter. “I’m sorry, but do you mind if I look up a number on your phone and then call my friend and let him know I’m lost?” I asked. She handed me her phone and then told me she was lucky she had her phone, but it was ready to be turned off because she didn’t have enough money to pay the bill.
The young girl and the mother seemed to be close to each other and talked together as I made my phone call, not really paying me much attention as the person at the other end of the phone told me to come on. He then told me how to get there, saying I was not too late.
As I stood to leave, a completely unplanned idea occurred to me. I reached into my wallet where I don't usually have cash and pulled out all I had, a $ 20 bill. I pressed it into the mother’s hand and then turned to leave quickly, because I didn’t want to waste time. The daughter called after me, “You have no idea how you just helped us, sir!” And yet, they really helped me.

A. Waiting quietly. B. Pretending not to care.
C. Chatting with each other. D. Listening carefully to the phone call.
7. What can we infer about the daughter from the last paragraph?
A. She didn’t need any money at all.
B. She couldn’t thank the author enough.
C. She wanted more help from the author.
D. She was angry about getting the author’s money.

In addition to applying for a traditional guide dog, the visually impaired (有视觉障碍的) people will soon have another option to help with their daily life — a robot guide dog.
About the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, the six-legged robot guide dog from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Mechanical Engineering can navigate (导航) users to destinations without running into barriers. It also has voice interaction functions and can recognize traffic light signals. With cameras, sensors, and AI technology, the robot dog can see, listen, and speak with users on daily journeys outside and be a companion at home.
Professor Gao Feng, the head of the research team at SJTU, points out that with six legs, the robot guide dog can walk smoothly with high stability. “Even if three legs are raised, the structure still has three points of contact with the ground, creating a very stable base.” Gao said. He adds that operators can use a cane (手杖) to control the walking and running speed of the robot.
In China, there are currently about 17.31 million visually impaired people, yet only around 400 guide dogs are available due to high training costs. People have to wait for a long time after applying for one. Unlike traditional dogs, the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China. “It's a bit like cars. We can mass-produce them in the same way as cars so that it will become more affordable,” Gao said. “This could be a huge market because tens of millions of people might need guide dogs.”
Li Fei, among the visually impaired people participating in the field test, believes such high technology will likely change their lives soon. “The research teams are thoughtful and are continuously making improvements,” Li said. “The robot dog is electronic, making it easier to get into public places than traditional guide dogs, I will probably try the robot guide dog when it becomes available. They can be precise and reliable as they seldom make subjective mistakes.”
8. What do we know about the robot guide dog?
A. It is smaller than an English Bulldog. B. It can identify traffic light signals.
C. It relies on Al technologies to move. D. It can interact with other robot guide dogs.
9. Why does the robot guide dog have six legs?
A. To walk more stably. B. To support heavier loads.
C. To better control its speed. D. To quickly deal with urgency.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The potential market for robot guide dogs.
B. The high cost of training traditional guide dogs.
C. The difficulty of applying for a robot guide dog.
D. The standard of mass-producing robot guide dogs.
11. What can we infer about the robot guide dog according to Li Fei?
A. It has been widely available to the public.
B. It needs further improvement in accuracy.
C. It will benefit visually impaired people a lot.
D. It will replace traditional guide dogs in the future.
D
The Amazon rainforest spreads across nine South American countries but most of it (60%) is in Brazil. Brazilian scientists think they might have found a way to reverse the damage caused by deforestation and turn farmland back into forest. The secret lies in ancient local knowledge of soil.
Amazonian dark earth (ADE) is a thick, black soil found deep in the Amazon rainforest, and it could help restore forests around the world. ADE is a kind of compost — a soil made from dead plants and animals. Various kinds of compost are sold in gardening centers around the world, but ADE is unique. It was created by indigenous people (the descendants of people who lived somewhere before another culture arrived and took over) from the Amazon between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago. The Amazonian people, today known as Amerindians, created ADE using charcoal from fires, animal bones, food waste and poo. It contains microbes, including bacteria that help to turn chemicals in the soil into useful nutrients that feed plants and trees.
Vast areas of the Amazon have been cut down, mostly to make way for grassland for raising cattle. Scientists are looking for a way to turn grassland back into rainforest and revive forest ecosystems. These support thousands of animal and plant species, many of them unique to the area. Forests also absorb lots of carbon dioxide, a gas that cause climate change.
To see if the Amazon’s special soil could help, the scientists grew grasses and trees in ADE, regular earth and a mixture of both. Trees grown in ADE were up to six times taller than those in regular soil. ADE takes hundreds of years to create, so the scientists can’t simply make more. Team member, Dr. Siu Mui Tsai, said that instead they want to try and “copy its characteristics”, especially its helpful microbes, and see if it could help to restore natural habitats.
12. What are Brazilian scientists trying to do?
A. To bring forests back. B. To measure damage.
C. To reduce farmland. D. To dig out ancient soil.
13. What made the Amazonian dark earth special?
A. Dead plants. B. Animal bones. C. Food waste. D. Bacteria inside.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The reasons for cutting down forests. B. The benefits of raising cattle.
C. The significance of forest ecosystems. D. The influence of climate change.
15. Which of the following might Dr. Siu agree with?
A. Amazonian dark earth is helpful to microbes.
B. Amazonian dark earth is produced in large quantities.
C. Microbes are beneficial to the revival of forests.
D. Microbes are the characteristics of the natural habitats.

Sometimes an act of kindness can mean a lot in life.
Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush driving to the new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment.
As it was all new to me, I took off my gold rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive. At the very first day at the clinic, I did a good job, busy but fruitful. So I felt more than proud. When it was time to get off work, I changed my clothes and went out of the clinic, thinking nothing of the ring.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my face burning red. I felt sick to my stomach. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected. I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. It mattered much to me and now as if I lost a precious thing and my feelings were beyond words.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having some health problems due to your unhealthy eating habits.
As the saying goes, you are what you eat. This shows what an important role the food we eat plays in keeping us healthy.
To have a balanced, healthy diet, to begin with, you must say no to junk food. Junk food, which usually contains much salt and sugar and high in fat and energy, may do great harm to our body. What’s more, you need to eat more fruit and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and minerals.
I hope my suggestions would be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

【47题答案】
【答案】参考范文:
But about two hours later, I received an amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins—which is not a pleasant task—to find my priceless ring. I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. On arriving the clinic, my manager gave the ring to me. Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the cleaner as she was at work elsewhere that day.
Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face. After a tiring day, I was about to leave as usual when I met a cleaner by accident, who came to collect the bins at the clinic. With much curiosity, I quickly came up to her, and asked whether she was the cleaner who had found my rings. The cleaner, wearing dirty overalls, stood in front of me and said yes. Excited and relieved, I expressed my deep gratitude to her again and again. She just told me it was not a big deal. Finally, she left, wearing a bright smile on her face. And that smile would stay in my memory forever.
