It is not a surprise people in the modern times are having much more stress than before. Luckily, a new study has found an easy way to deal with the problem. Researchers from the University of Hyogo (兵库大学) in Japan have found that small green plants on the desk can go a long way towards reducing people’s stress.
More than 60 people from different jobs took part in the study. Half of them were asked to work as usual without any plants in sight while the other half were given a plant to put on their desks. Researchers then used a standard test to measure (测量) their stress levels. More than 90 per cent of the office workers showed lower stress levels after taking a three-minute rest to look at their plants.
The study has found that it does not matter whether people were directly looking at their plants or only having the plants near their computers. As long as people had a green plant in sight, their stress levels changed greatly. Moreover, this finding worked on everyone no matter how old they were and what their jobs were.
People used to go outdoors into nature to relax themselves, but now they have less time to do so, one of the researchers said. “Lucky for them, our study has proved that a small green plant works in the same way as a large forest.”

When you picture a leaf in your mind, what colour is it? You may say “green”. As a matter of fact, that’s not true. The green colour is from a chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素). Without chlorophyll, a green plant would not be able to survive.
Chlorophyll helps plants produce food through photosynthesis (光合作用). During photosynthesis, chlorophyll takes in sunlight. This gives the plant energy. The leaves use the energy to mix CO₂ with water. This helps food production.
In autumn days become shorter and shorter. There is less sunlight for plants. When winter comes, there is less water in the air. With less water and sunlight, photosynthesis slows down. Then leaves stop producing chlorophyll, so plants stop producing food. When the green chlorophyll disappears, other colours such as yellow and orange appear on the leaves. In fact, these colours are always there and they are nearly covered up by chlorophyll before. As soon as leaves stop producing chlorophyll, they change colour, die, and fall from the tree. In spring, days become longer. The weather becomes warmer and there is much more water in the air. So new green leaves can grow healthily and quickly.
Above all, photosynthesis is the food-making and energy process (过程) for plants to survive. Without photosynthesis, plants would not be able to live and grow.

五、读写综合(满分30分)
阅读并回答问题。
When you picture a leaf in your mind, what colour is it? You may say “green”. As a matter of fact, that’s not true. The green colour is from a chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素). Without chlorophyll, a green plant would not be able to survive.
Chlorophyll helps plants produce food through photosynthesis (光合作用). During photosynthesis, chlorophyll takes in sunlight. This gives the plant energy. The leaves use the energy to mix CO₂ with water. This helps food production.
In autumn, days become shorter and shorter.

How to live a healthy and happy life
Hi, my dear classmates!
With the improvement of living conditions, we are paying more and more attention to our health, which includes both physical and mental health. Then how can we students live a healthy and happy life?
In my opinion, we should have a healthy diet and play sports regularly to keep physically healthy. Besides, having enough sleep is of great importance to our growing bodies. In addition, we should take a positive attitude to our life and study so that we can keep mentally healthy. Furthermore, I strongly advise that we should be kind to people around us, for we can be treated kindly in reward. What’s more important is that we should keep informed of the world outside the school so that we won’t be cut off from the world.
I hope all of us can live healthily and happily.
