C
In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit — I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing.
What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily combined with a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.
Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
28. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?
A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself.
B. The author agrees to spend money on material things.
C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.
D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.
29. Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that .
A. traveling changes a person’s identity greatly
B. people dislike those who love luxuries
C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries
D. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness
30. What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself?
A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal unique style.
C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s.
31. The main purpose of the article is to .
A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries
B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life
C. tell how to express yourself through appearances
D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness
【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. A

It seems as if social media platforms have taken over our lives. According to a study, there were over 3.6 billion social media users in 2021. And that number is only expected to grow.
Although social media platforms have helped to keep friends and family connected, there is also a dark side to social media. To put it simply, it is a money making machine. This is partially because of social media influencers. A social media influencer is someone “who can shape audience’s attitudes through blogs, tweets, and the use of other social media”. You may be asking yourself, “Why would they want to do this, though?” The answer is simple: to make money. Social media influencers make money by promoting brands among their followers. In fact, influencer marketing is so profitable that the study reported that the industry is expected to reach $15 billion in value in 2022.
Social media influencers are now being called out because some of their actions have started to negatively impact the environment. One man in particular, who goes by Steve to remain anonymous (匿名的), noticed that some online influencers failed to follow rules when they went to national parks or public places. This included things like leaving garbage behind, or using drones (无人机) to take pictures from the sky.
Because of this, Steve made it his mission to stop social media influencers from hurting the environment with their bad behavior in order to get the “perfect shot”. In 2018, he made the account “Public Lands Hate You” to name and shame influencers who failed to follow the rules made to protect the environment. The account now has over 85 thousand followers.
He hoped that it could help some influencers find the light and right their wrongs. Steve said “If everybody thought just a little bit more about their small actions and the impact those actions have on the environment and the people around them, I think that a lot of our bigger problems would be much more easily solved.”
32. What feature of social media influencers is mainly shown in paragraph 2?
A. Good communication. B. Chasing profits.
C. Creative shows. D. Volunteering service.
33. How does the writer present his idea in paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By offering data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By explaining reasons.
34. Why was “Public Lands Hate You” made?
A. To win wide attention and attract more fans.
B. To get the influencers aware of their wrong deeds.
C. To make public places inaccessible to influencers.
D. To inform the influencers of the places for perfect shots.
35. What is implied from Steve’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Well begun is half done. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Every bit of effort counts. D. Actions speak louder than words.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. C

During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents’ house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play.” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we’re going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies (日用品) for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We’d first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we’ll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity (慈善)work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot... It was so small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.
Paragraph1:
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom. I found there were about twenty children. Their clothes were worn out; their school bags were just plastic ones. Immediately I felt sorry for them. The teacher introduced us and told them why we came here. Hearing that, all the children were excited, and told us the things they had wanted for long, such as picture books, new pencils and so on. My mom made a list of these things.
Paragraph 2
Holding the shopping list, my mom and I headed for a store. There I helped my mom pick up the things on the list. And I decided to buy something for the children using my own pocket money. My mom praised me for it. Then I added some candies to our supplies. These children were so glad and they thanked us when receiving the gifts. Some of them started reading the picture books and sharing the candies right away. That day, I learned doing something meaningful for others could also be a wonderful thing.

One day Jack went with his family to eat in a restaurant. They were sitting at a table and waiting for their meal. Suddenly, everyone around them started to cover their noses. Some of them even left their tables and went away.
When Jacks family turned around to see what had caused this, they saw two homeless boys. The boys looked dirty and smelled bad. But both boys were smiling and had beautiful blue eyes. They were looking for someone kind. One of the boys went to the counter and he counted the coins he had. The other boy looked sick and he stood quietly.
The young lady at the counter asked the boy what they wanted. He said,“We only want a cup of coffee.” That was all they could afford. They wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up. It was really cold outside. But to sit inside the restaurant, they had to buy something.
When Jacks mother saw this, she wanted to help the boys. She ordered some more food. Then she went to the two boys table. She put the food on the table. In recent years China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands.

Steve said, “If everybody thought just a little bit more about their small actions and the impact those actions have on the environment and the people around them, I think that a lot of our bigger problems would be much more easily solved.”
32. What feature of social media influencers is mainly shown in paragraph 2?
A. Good communication. B. Chasing profits.
C. Creative shows. D. Volunteering service.
33. How does the writer present his idea in paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By offering data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By explaining reasons.
34. Why was “Public Lands Hate You” made?
A. To win wide attention and attract more fans.
B. To get the influencers aware of their wrong deeds.
C. To make public places inaccessible to influencers.
D. To inform the influencers of the places for perfect shots.
35. What is implied from Steve’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Well begun is half done. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Every bit of effort counts. D. Actions speak louder than words.
