Are you angry by the noise of your alarm clock every morning? Still feel sleepy after getting
up? Now, you can say goodbye to that annoying alarm clock, you needn’t hear its unpleasant noise
every morning.
The Glo Pillow (发光枕 ) can wake you up with soft LED lights. The lights produce the
brightness over 40 minutes just like the sunrise. The pillow is taking the place of the traditional
alarm clock. It was designed (设计) by Eoin McNally and Ian Walton to be against the pressures of
a “24 hour” lifestyle.
The pillow uses a kind of LED material below the surface. It wakes the user up with light. The
material can also show the time on the pillow’s surface, and it is perfect for those who sleep with
their heads completely buried (埋) face down into the pillow. 40 minutes before the pre-set (预设)
alarm time, the pillow begins to glow and gently brings the user out of sleep. The natural waking
process helps to set “body clock” and makes people build a healthy sleep-and-wake habit slowly.

A. LED lights B. the alarm clock
C. the sunrise D. people
30. The pillow wakes people up with _____.

One night in winter, a bear came into the city of Vancouver in Canada. It went around the
streets and found some food in the trash bins (垃圾箱) and started eating. In the morning, someone
saw the bear and called the police. They came and took the bear back to the mountains. The bear
was returned safe and sound.
But what happens in other countries when big animals come into cities? In Cape Town, South
Africa, baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are hungry. Sometimes they go into houses and
take food from fridges! They can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too.
Sometimes, they die in traffic accidents. Human food is also very bad for their teeth. It has a lot of
sugar. Now, there are baboon monitors (监视器) in Cape Town to help deal with the situation.
People also help return the animals to the countryside. In Moscow, there are 35,000 stray dogs
(流浪狗). They live in parks, old houses, markets and train stations. Many people give them food
and water. Some make small houses for the dogs in their gardens. This helps them in winter. In some
cities, you can see birds, insects (昆虫), mice and squirrels (松鼠) every day. But sometimes, big
animals can be dangerous. We need to stop them coming into cities without hurting them.
33. Where did the bear find food to eat in Vancouver, Canada?
A. In fridges. B. In trash bins.
C. In cars. D. In restaurants.
34. What makes the city dangerous for baboons, according to the passage?

If you ask your fiends in your city:“What time do you get up?”, their answers might be similar
because you live in the same place and follow similar routines. But in cities around the world,
people have different ways of living. 37
In Beijing, people get up at about 7 o’clock in the morning. After having breakfast, people start
their work or study. At noon, they have lunch and take a nap (小憩). 38 Some people
get off work at about 5 pm, while others may keep working until midnight.
People’s daily life schedule in Urumqi (乌鲁木齐) may surprise you. 39 What
time do they have lunch? The answer is around 2 pm. In the afternoon, people work from 4 pm to 8
pm. The answer behind this difference is that the days are very long in summer in Urumqi. The sun
rises at about 6 am but sets at almost 10 pm. So people in Urumqi may finish their dinner at 10 pm,
when you are going to fall asleep.
Rovaniemi (罗瓦涅米) is a city in Finland (芬兰). It’s in the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Every
year, people in Rovaniemi see a special geographical phenomena (地理现象): polar day. The polar
day happens from June to July when the sun doesn’t set at all. People try to keep their usual routines
and enjoy relaxing activities. 40 Sometimes, they wake up earlier than usual because
of the constant (持续的) daylight.
A. To sleep during the bright nights, they use thick curtains (窗帘) and eye masks (眼罩).
B. Let’s see how daily routines change in three cities.
C. Then they might do some fun activities like having dinner with fiends.
D. In summer, people start work at about 10 am.
E. What time do they get off work? It can be different.

WONDER——Giving a helping hand
I recently finished reading the book Wonder written by the US writer R.J.
Palacio. This book tells the story of Augusta Pullman, a 10-year-old boy with
facial (面部的) difference, and his journey through school.
The book teaches us to be kind to others. It really touched (触动) my heart.
Students often bully (欺负) Pullman for not looking normal (正常的). But his
classmates Jack and Summer don’t care about how he looks. They become his
real friends and like him for who he is.
