California’s Hidden Gems
Lost Coast
An experienced hiker’s paradise, California’s Lost Coast stretches from Shelter Cove to Mattole Beach, about 75 miles. If that’s too ambitious, drive the Mattole Loop instead, stopping to explore Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to Avenue of the Giants, and the town of Ferndale, recognized by its Victorian architecture.
Mono Lake
Otherworldly in a number of ways, Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake on California’s eastern edge. No fish swim here, but brine shrimp do, and those draw myriad bird species that migrate along the Pacific Flyway. Distinct limestone formations called tufa stand out — literally and figuratively — at Mono Lake.
Point Reyes
Point Reyes is pleasantly quiet, especially along its coastal trails. Look for wildflowers and endemic animals on Tomales Point Trail — which rambles for nearly 10 miles on this special, skinny peninsula, delivering gorgeous, foggy views of the Ocean.
Trinity Alps
Another stunning preserve in Northern California, Trinity Alps Wilderness awe s visitors with its alpine lakes and granite peaks. It’s an excellent option for day hiking, like Hidden Lake Trail, but also for multiday backpacking trips such as the 18.6-mile Canyon Creek Lakes Trail.
Shasta Lake
This sprawling reservoir might best be experienced via houseboat. Once on board your floating accommodations, try your hand at all the water sports: swimming, water skiing, fishing, jet skiing, and more, all with regal Mount Shasta in the background.
21. What can you do in Point Reyes?
A. Enjoy fantastic views. B. Visit a natural preserve.
C. Climb sharp peaks. D. Try some water sports.
22. What is the best choice for people carrying binoculars and bird field guide?
A. Shasta Lake. B. Point Reyes. C. Mono Lake. D. Lost Coast.
23. Where would this passage most probably come from?

You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back? You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills.
Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master's degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency(精通)with particular computer prograns
On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can't be defined. And they can't be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common and most necessary for success-include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader,a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It's also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.
Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you're a doctor.Being flexible,a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.
Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to success. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you'll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.
Soft skills are what can set people apart from one another, but soft skills don’t come naturally.
24. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills.
B. Soft Skills Can Be learnt at School.
C. Soft Skills Needed in Workplace
D. Soft Skills matter to Your Success at Work.
25. Which of the following belongs to hard skills?
A. Being expert in English.
B. Being able to solve problems.
C. Being good at expressing oneself.
D. Being skillful at communicating.
26. Accoding to the passage, soft skills_______.
A. are certain inborn qualities
B. help one stand out from the others
C. are more difficult to gain than hard skills
D. attract the employers more easily than hard skills
27. What will the author most probably talk about afterwards?
A. Why soft skills are important.
B. What skills belong to soft skills.
C. How soft skills are developed.
D. Where soft skills are mostly used.

I had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well , because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development many parents are led to believe. However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse , the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract (分心) us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.
Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.
We are not alone here. Several analyses and systematic reviews centralize on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities finds no evidence of intense changes associated with digital-technology use.
As a psychologist studying children’s and adolescents’ mental health, I appreciate parents’ frustration (沮丧) and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however, no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.
More young people are talking openly about their mental-health struggles than ever before. But insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.
28. What is presented in The Anxious Generation?
A. Scary stories affect children’s brains.
B. Parents are responsible for children’s health.
C. Teen’s mental illness results from screen time.
D. The epidemic of mental illness is unavoidable.
29. What does “the same message ” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Many countries do research in mental health.
B. Well-being and social media are closely related.
C. The young are trapped in the mental-health crisis,
D. Social media don’t necessarily cause mental illness.
30. What is implied in the last paragraph?
A. Effective actions need to be taken. B. Positive stories should be shared.
C Financial support needs to be provided. D. Broader research should be done.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To suggest ways to help those in need.
B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.
C. To recommend a newly-published book.
D. To give a voice to children’s mental issues.

Evolution (进化) can perform extraordinary makeovers; today’s airborne songbirds evolved from the wingless, earthbound dinosaurs that wandered millions of years ago. But some organisms seem to be unchanged — in other words, escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, is nearly identical to its 410-million-year-old fossils.
Scientists have long wondered how these species do so. It has been assumed that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for moderate or average qualities (stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities that would cause a species to change (directional selection).
But a study published in the National Academy of Sciences USA contradicts this idea, showing that evolution constantly favors different qualities in seemingly unchanging animals to improve short-term survival. In the long term, though, “all that evolution cancels out and leads to no change,” says the study’s lead author, James Stroud.
Stroud and his colleagues studied for lizard (蜥蜴) specios; all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of these populations every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived. Stroud expected to observe stabılızıng selection at work preserving moderate qualities. Instead he saw clearer evidence of directional selection: some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better.
“The study offers a good explanation for why we see what we think is stabiliring selection,” says Tadashi Fukami, an ecologist studying evolution at Stanford University. Many new qualities are evolving in the short term, but they don’t provide a crucial advantage over the long term. In other words, species staying unchanged may simply have found the best possible combination of qualities for lasting success in their environment. So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.
32. Why does the author mention the “coelacanth fish” in paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate the power of evolution. B. To add evidence to natural selection.
C. To give an example of unchanged species. D. To prove species' extraordinary makeovers.
33. What's the focus of paragraph 2?
A. Unsolved mysteries. B. A common belief.
C. A sharp contrast. D. Unique Characteristics.
34. How did Stroud conduct his research?
A. By analyzing lizard fossils. B. By tracking research objects.
C. By illustrating stabilizing selection. D. By categorizing qualities of lizards.
35. What will Stroud probably do in the future?
A. Make trips to visit lizard experts. B. Summarize average features of lizards.
C. Reveal the best combinations of qualities. D. Examine lizards under extreme conditions.

“She wants a what?” barked the fruit seller. I was in one of the many street markets of Luzhou, a small city located in China’s Sichuan Province. Already, a crowd of curious on - lookers was gathering: white - haired grandmas, toothless old men, mothers holding infants. Everyone was waiting, wondering why the foreigner was causing such a fuss
I took a deep breath. The crowd leaned in. “Do you have a pumpkin?” I asked as clearly as possible. A mother holding an infant explained there was no pumpkin here in English. I had to move on to yet another market in my search for Halloween.
As an American English teacher in China, the urge was strong to explain my country’s cultural traditions to my students. I’d had plenty of success in teaching the Chinese about significant United States holidays and events, Halloween being one of them. Yet I was now in a new teaching position, in a different region of the country which seems to have every kind of produce known to man except the one I wanted for Oct.31.
I had learned that in teaching about Halloween, there was no substitute (替代品) for a carved pumpkin. Descriptions produced blank stares. Drawings were misinterpreted. Pictures only puzzled.
Sure, I could give up showing a real jack-o’- lantern (南瓜灯) to my students. I could lecture on the history of this tradition, which had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. We could have a go at wearing masks, and role- play trick - or - treat.
But nothing could compare with the pumpkin. For that reason, I was willing to go through just about anything to find a pumpkin for my students.
In another section of the city, I headed to a big market. “Do you have a pumpkin?” I asked the seller I saw. “A what?” she seemed to be at a loss. However, I didn’t know how to make her understand what I wanted.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Suddenly, an idea occurred to me.

That's why we have collected some tips that will help speed up your learning process. First, create a music playlist for learning. Soft background music will not only create a relaxed atmosphere, but also we do stress. You can even find ready made play lists on popular music applications. Second, set a clear goal answer to questions. What exactly do you want to learn and why as soon as you get the answers, find an interesting way of learning. Third, count on your talent. Less often, hard work and perseverance are true signals of our intellectual abilities, not talent. Fourth, remember the rule, two thirds spend only one third of your time learning theories. The rest should be used for practice. When we practice, our brains get used to the process, and then spend less energy on IT. Thus, we can have extra energy and opportunities to learn something new. Finally, develop and grow your mental attitude. The more you believe that you are able to learn something, the more knowledge you will absorb. M: I’m not sure. I’ve seen them many times. They are frequent visitors to my garden, damaging my plants and making a mess. That’s so annoying! Look, they brought some trash here today. One time, I found a dead mouse in front of the door.
W: Wow, that’s not very pleasant. I remember I read somewhere that oranges and lemons can be used to scare off cats.
M: What? You mean I should put some fruits around to keep cats away? Are you kidding?
W: It sounded ridiculous to me too. According to that article, cats really dislike the smell of oranges and lemons. You know how strong their peels smell, right? So, they can be used to frighten off cats. Why don’t you try it? Oranges and lemons are non-poisonous, so they won’t be harmful to animals or your garden. Maybe that actually works.

A
California’s Hidden Gems
A. An advertisement B. A travel guide C. An encyclopaedia D. A nature novel
A 22. C 23. B

D 25. A 26. B 27. C

C. Financial support needs to be provided. D. Broader research should be done.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To suggest ways to help those in need.
B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.
C. To recommend a newly-published book.
D. To give a voice to children’s mental issues.
C 29. D 30. A 31. D
根据第一段中“However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. (然而,这本书一再暗示数字技术正在重构我们孩子的大脑,并导致精神健康问题的流行,这一观点并没有得到科学的支持。)”可知,该书重复暗示数字技术正在重构我们孩子的大脑,并导致精神健康问题的流行。C选项“Teen’s mental illness results from screen time.(青少年的精神疾病与看屏幕时间有关。)”
根据划线词前面的内容“When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.( 随着时间的推移,他们发现社交媒体的使用并不是预测或导致抑郁症,而是已经有心理健康问题的年轻人比健康的同龄人更频繁地或以不同的方式使用这些平台。)”以及划线词后面的内容“An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. (在72个国家进行的一项分析显示,在全球范围内,幸福感和社交媒体之间没有一致的或可衡量的联系。)”可知,“同样的信息”指的是社交媒体并不一定导致心理健康问题。通过在72个国家进行的一项分析显示,在全球范围内,幸福感和社交媒体之间没有一致的或可衡量的联系。故划线词指代的是没有一致或可测量的证据表明社交媒体与幸福感之间有密切关系。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.(我们这一代人正处于危机之中,迫切需要科学和基于证据的解决方案所能提供的最好的东西。不幸的是,我们的时间花在讲述没有研究支持的故事上,这些故事对那些需要、也应该得到更多支持的年轻人几乎没有帮助。)”可知,针对于年轻人的心理健康问题,我们正在浪费时间讲述没有研究支持的故事,而这些故事对需要帮助的年轻人并没有帮助,这暗示我们需要采取有效的行动来解决这个问题。故选A。
根据第一段中“I had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well , because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development many parents are led to believe. However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science.(读完《焦虑一代》后,我不得不说些什么。这本书将会畅销,因为乔纳森·海特特讲述了一个许多父母都倾向于相信的关于儿童发展可怕的故事。然而,书中反复暗示数字技术正在重新连接我们孩子的大脑,并导致精神疾病的流行,这一观点并没有科学支持。)”以及最后一段中“Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.(不幸的是,我们的时间花在讲述没有研究支持的故事上,这些故事对那些需要、也应该得到更多支持的年轻人几乎没有帮助。)” D选项“To give a voice to children’s mental issues.(为孩子们的心理问题发声。)”
D
A To demonstrate the power of evolution.
C 33. B 34. B 35. D

根据倒数第二段“Stroud and his colleagues studied for lizard (蜥蜴) specios; all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of these populations every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived. Stroud expected to observe stabılızıng selection at work preserving moderate qualities. Instead he saw clearer evidence of directional selection: some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better.(斯特劳德和他的同事研究了蜥蜴物种;所有这些在2000万年间都相对没有变化。
根据最后一段“In other words, species staying unchanged may simply have found the best possible combination of qualities for lasting success in their environment. So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.(换句话说,保持不变的物种可能只是找到了在其环境中持久成功的最佳品质组合。那么,当蜥蜴的环境发生更剧烈的变化时会发生什么呢?为了帮助回答这个更大的问题,斯特劳德仍在继续探访这些蜥蜴)”可知,接下来斯特劳德会在极端条件下检查蜥蜴。故选D项。

内容包括:1. 大家的看法及理由2. 你的观点。
Yesterday, our class had a discussion on whether reading a book is better than listening to it and opinions divide.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yesterday, our class had a discussion on whether reading a book is better than listening to it and opinions divide.
Some students hold the view that reading a book is better in that they can stop wherever they need to digest or reflect on the material or write down important points for subsequent review. Also, the scent of the ink will intrigue them into the magical world of books, spiritually satisfied.
However, others argue that listening to a book can take place anytime and anyplace, which saves them the trouble of carrying books wherever they go. And listening to a book can more easily get them immersed in what the speaker is saying.
I think we should deal with serious books by reading, and books for relaxation can be done by listening.
Yesterday, our class had a discussion on whether reading a book is better than listening to it and opinions divide.
Some students consider it better to read a book. It helps them better digest the information in it and more easily turn the pages back and forth to review points. However others disagree. They think listening to books is more convenient, as they can do it anytime and anywhere. Moreover, they can do other stuff while listening.
Personally, both methods have strengths and weaknesses. As students, we should read the books related to our lessons and listen to other books for relaxation.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Suddenly, an idea occurred to me.

On Oct. 31, I brought the carefully - carved pumpkin into the class.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, an idea occurred to me. I could bridge the language gap with visuals! I drew a simple sketch of a pumpkin, complete with a stem on top and the characteristic ridges (纹路). “I need something like this,” I said, showing my drawing to the seller. She studied the sketch with curiosity, then looked up at me, understanding dawning on her face. After a moment, she disappeared behind a pile of produce and soon returned with a round, orange pumpkin. “That’s it!” I exclaimed, my face lit up with joy. Immediately I rushed back home, starting to carve my beautiful pumpkin.
On Oct. 31, I brought the carefully- carved pumpkin into the class. The students gathered around, their eyes wide with curiosity as they observed the delicately carved face with a flickering candle inside. It was indeed a traditional jack-o’- lantern, and it captured the essence of the holiday. As the light cast shadows around the room, I began to tell them about the origins of Halloween, the legends of spirits and the custom of carving pumpkins to drive off evil spirits. They listened attentively, eyes fixed on me. We were all connected through the universal language of celebration and tradition despite the cultural differences.
