Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday in the US. Some other countries have their own versions of Thanksgiving.
Brazil
Legend has it that Joaquim Nabuco, Brazil’s first ambassador (大使) to the US, enjoyed the American holiday so much that he persuaded his government to set up a similar day of thanks. Dia de Acao de Gracas is also celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks for the fall harvest. The Brazilian holiday ends with a colorful and noisy carnival(狂欢节) and parade.
Japan
Japan’s version of the holiday, called “Kinro Kansha no Hi” or Labor Thanksgiving Day, is observed on November 23. It originated from an ancient rice harvest festival called Niiname-sai. Later, the holiday’s purpose was to celebrate the rights of workers. Today, Labor Thanksgiving Day is mainly observed with small acts of community service. Children often mark the occasion by handing out thank-you notes to firefighters, police officers, and other frontline workers.
Canada
Thanksgiving in Canada is a low-key affair with no big parades or retail sales. The holiday mainly focuses on families and friends getting together for a meal. While many parts of the country get the day off, it is an optional (可选择的) holiday in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador. As a result, the celebrations often take place the weekend before the holiday.
Ghana
Ghana celebrates its version of Thanksgiving in August or September. As the story goes, the Ga settlers arrived in Ghana in the 16th century after facing lots of hardships during their travels across Africa. They celebrated their first harvest in Ghana with a feast, and a tradition was born. Before the festival, there is a month-long ban on noise, especially drumming. Similar to Thanksgiving, Homowo is a festival of food.
1. What probably led to the birth of Dia de Acao de Gracas in Brazil?
A. The development of agriculture. B. A demand from Americans in Brazil.
C. A government official’s suggestion. D. The influence of traditional Brazilian culture.
2. What can be learned about Japan’s version of the holiday?
A. It begins with an exciting carnival.
B. Rice sales are a big part of the holiday.
C. Celebrations can take place before Labor Day.
D. It encourages kids to express gratitude for hard work.
3. In which country can you best enjoy the quiet before its Thanksgiving?
A. Canada. B. Ghana. C. Brazil. D. Japan.

根据最后一段“Before the festival, there is a month-long ban on noise, especially drumming. (在音乐节之前,有一个为期一个月的禁止噪音,尤其是鼓声。)”可知,在加纳,感恩节前一个月会禁止噪音,所以你会享受到安静的生活。故选B项。

In Italy, specially trained dogs from the Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs (SICS) are now protecting the beaches and tourists. SICS units, consisting of one dog and one trainer, are tasked with watching over about 30 of the country’s busiest beaches.
The SICS program is the brainchild of Ferruccio Pilenga, who got the idea that dogs would make excellent lifeguards from watching his own Newfoundland, an extremely powerful swimmer named Mas. “The dog pulled a water-filled boat with three people on board for half an hour,” Pilenga said. “A human cannot do that.”
The SICS program is a pretty arduous one. After 18 months of basic training, only those dogs successfully completing the required steps can move on to the more intensive (加强的) aspects of lifesaving techniques, such as jumping from helicopters and leaping from speeding boats.
While the success of the program can be partly attributed to the dogs’ survival instincts that help them find the safest route to shore, as well as their energy and ability to follow commands, Pilenga believes the emotional component (成分) they bring to their work cannot be ignored.
“The presence of the dogs helps to lighten the situation,” he said. “The biggest reward is the emotion that the dog and the owner feel at the moment of the rescue, which further unites that special bond. To be able to use a dog in a water rescue mission gives the rescuer a leg up. The rescuer who operates on his own is alone. But we are never alone. We are always in a team with our dog, so it’s a six-legged unit. With my dog, I can save my energy and become a more effective rescuer,” Pilenga said.
Italy is currently the only country to recognize certified doggie lifeguards. However, with training centers to be set up in the near future in the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, and the Azores, the SICS program is looking to spread its safety net to wider waters.
4. What inspired Pilenga to come up with the SICS program?
A. His adventures with Mas. B. His close relationship with Mas.
C. Mas’s ability to follow commands. D. Mas’s amazing rescue performance.
5. What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Secure. B. Difficult. C. Popular. D. Interesting.
6. What impresses Pilenga most about doggie lifeguards?
A. Their gentle character. B. Their quick reaction to changes.
C. Their outstanding swimming ability. D. Their emotional support for rescuers.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Human lifeguards will be replaced by dogs soon.
B. The SICS program brings about heated debates.
C. Doggie lifeguards will play their roles in more places.
D. Dogs will receive longer training to become lifeguards.
D 5. B 6. D 7. C
根据第二段“The SICS program is the brainchild of Ferruccio Pilenga, who got the idea that dogs would make excellent lifeguards from watching his own Newfoundland, an extremely powerful swimmer named Mas. “The dog pulled a water-filled boat with three people on board for half an hour,” Pilenga said. “A human cannot do that.”(SICS项目是费鲁奇奥·皮伦加的创意,他通过观察自己的纽芬兰犬——一只名叫马斯的游泳健将,产生了狗能成为优秀救生员的想法。皮伦加说:“这只狗拉着一艘装满水的船,船上有三个人,拖了半个小时。”“人类做不到这一点。”)”可知,马斯惊人的救援表现激发了Pilenga提出SICS项目。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“After 18 months of basic training, only those dogs successfully completing the required steps can move on to the more intensive (加强的) aspects of lifesaving techniques, such as jumping from helicopters and leaping from speeding boats.(经过18个月的基本训练后,只有那些成功完成要求步骤的狗才能进入更密集的救生技术,比如从直升机上跳下来,从高速行驶的船上跳下来)”可知,狗狗需要经过艰苦困难的训练,说明SICS项目是一个相当困难的项目。
根据倒数第二段“The biggest reward is the emotion that the dog and the owner feel at the moment of the rescue, which further unites that special bond.(最大的回报是狗狗和主人在获救的那一刻感受到的情感,这进一步巩固了这种特殊的纽带)”可知,狗狗救生员给Pilenga印象最深的是对救援人员的情感支持。
根据最后一段“However, with training centers to be set up in the near future in the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, and the Azores, the SICS program is looking to spread its safety net to wider waters.(然而,随着不久的将来在美国、德国、瑞士和亚速尔群岛建立培训中心,SICS项目正在寻求将其安全网扩展到更广泛的水域)”可知,狗狗救生员会在更多的地方发挥作用。故选C。
C
“Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Do you agree with this old saying? Joanne Gordon does. She is the author of Be Happy at work and other books about careers (职业). Gordon believes that about 30% of employees (雇员) in North America do not like their jobs, and she thinks that is terrible. She wants to help people who do not feel satisfied with their jobs find work that is good for them. Joanne says, “There are no happy jobs, only happy workers.” She believes that happy workers share three main characteristics.
First happy workers enjoy the daily activities of their jobs, and they look forward to the workday. Take Tony Hawk, for example. At age 14, he became a professional skateboarder. Now he is a businessman working on projects related to skateboarding — films and video games, but he still skates every day. He once said, “My youngest son’s pre-school was recently asked what their dads do for work. My son said, ‘I’ve never seen my dad do work.’” Tony agrees that his job doesn’t look like work. He has found a way to spend each day doing a job he enjoys.
Second, happy workers like the people they work with. Sally Ayote says, “I work with the coolest people in the world.” She and her group cook for almost 1,200 people in Antarctica. Most of these people are scientists who are doing research. Sally loves to sit and talk with them. She says, “There is no television here, no radio, so I get to know the scientists and what they’re studying.” Sally thinks she has a great job, and the best part about it is the people.
Third, happy workers know that their work helps others. Caroline Baron’s work helps people who have had to leave their home countries because of war or other dangers. She is a filmmaker who started an organization called FilmAid, which shows movies in refugee (难民) camps around the world. Caroline believes that movies can be very helpful in these camps. For one thing, entertaining movies let refugees forget their troubles for a little while. Movies can also teach important subjects like health and safety. For example, in one camp, thousands of refugees saw a movie about how to get clean water. Caroline knows that is helping other people, and this makes her feel proud and happy about her work.
Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote, and Caroline Baron all get great satisfaction from their work. Tony Hawk says, “Find the thing you love. If you are doing what you love, there is much more happiness there than being rich or famous.” Joanne Gordon would agree. She encourages people to find something they enjoy doing, find people they like to work with, and find ways to help others. Then they can be proud of what they do, and they will probably be happy at work.
8. Who is the book, Be Happy at Work, written for?
A. Joanne Gordon herself.
B. Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote, and Caroline Baron.
C. People who do not feel satisfied with their jobs.
D. The workers who agree with the author’s ideas.
9. Why did Tony Hawk’s son say, “I’ve never seen my dad do work.”?
A. Because Tony Hawk’s job doesn’t look like work.
B. Because Tony Hawk always finds something enjoyable in his job.
C. Because Tony helps people forget their troubles while skating.
D. Because the best part about his job is to spend each day skating.
10. Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote, and Caroline Baron are good examples that show us ____________.
A. how to be a successful businessman
B. how to help people in difficulties
C. how to get along with the coolest people
D. how to become a happy worker
11. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Some people believe that only a few kinds of jobs can really make people feel happy.
B The writer of the passage tells us that many different kinds of work can be enjoyable.
C. The author of Be Happy at Work thinks that happiness at work is really important.
D. Joanne Gordon believes that people will probably be happy at work when they are proud of what they do.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“She wants to help people who do not feel satisfied with their jobs find work that is good for them.(她想帮助那些对自己的工作不满意的人找到适合自己的工作)”可推知,Joanne的这本书是为那些对自己的工作不满意的人写的。
根据第二段“First, happy workers enjoy the daily activities of their jobs, and they look forward to the workday. He has found a way to spend each day doing a job he enjoys.(首先,快乐的员工喜欢他们工作的日常活动,他们期待着工作日。
根据第二、三、四、五段的首句“First, happy workers enjoy the daily activities of their jobs, and they look forward to the workday.(首先,快乐的员工喜欢他们工作的日常活动,他们期待着工作日)” “Second, happy workers like the people they work with. Sally Ayote says, “I work with the coolest people in the world.”(第二,快乐的员工喜欢和他们一起工作的人。Sally Ayote说:“我和世界上最酷的人一起工作。”)” “Third, happy workers know that their work helps others.(第三,快乐的员工知道他们的工作有助于他人)” “Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote, and Caroline Baron all get great satisfaction from their work.(Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote和Caroline Baron都从他们的工作中获得了极大的满足感)”可知,Tony Hawk, Sally Ayote, and Caroline Baron这三个人都从工作中找到了乐趣和满足感。
根据第一段“Joanne says, “There are no happy jobs, only happy workers.”(乔安妮说:“没有快乐的工作,只有快乐的工人。”)”和最后一段“If you are doing what you love, there is much more happiness there than being rich or famous.(如果你在做自己喜欢的事情,那比发财成名要快乐得多)”可知,给人带来快乐的工作本不存在,只有开心工作的人。 故选A。
D
Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be good ideas for those very bright students, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.
Unfortunately, a number of students killed themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some do bad things with trouble-makers and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study.
It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special school called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams, they do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these cram schools.
Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bag. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.
12. A lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because_______.
A. they work very hard
B. they find they can’t do well at school
C. they feel unimportant
D. they are under too much pressure
13. Because of their failure at school, some students take drugs to _______.
A. kill themselves B. seek comfort
C. disappoint their parents D. make trouble
14. In juku-cram schools students_________.
A. are taken good care of by the teachers
B. feel no pressure
C. are trained to pass exams
D. can learn a lot of useful things
15. In ordinary Japanese schools, ______________ .
A. there are strict rules B. students feel safe
C. students can do anything D. learning is not important
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据前文的“The tomato is definitely one of the most popular of all home grown vegetables and for good reason.(番茄绝对是最受欢迎的家庭种植蔬菜之一,这是有原因的。)” C选项“They are vibrant, delicious and easy to grow.(它们生机勃勃,美味可口,易于种植。)”
根据后文的“The trick is to start your seed raising early either in a green house or indoors, especially in colder climates.(诀窍在于,无论是在温室还是室内,尤其是在寒冷的气候条件下,都要尽早开始播种。)” G选项“Tomatoes are warm season plants and can be planted with others like eggplants and potatoes.(西红柿是温暖季节的植物,可以和茄子、土豆等其他植物一起种植。)”

根据前文的“Gently take out your seedling and plant it into the new pot but plant it up to just below its first leaves. (轻轻地取出幼苗,把它栽到新花盆里,但是要栽到第一片叶子下面。)”可知,在移植番茄苗,把它栽种到新花盆里的时候,要栽到第一片叶子下面。后文应该强调的是这么做的原因是什么。B选项“This ensures a deeper and stronger root.(这确保了一个更深更强的根基。)”
根据前文的“Feed your tomato plants with a good quality tomato feed every 10-14 days. (每10-14天喂一次优质的番茄饲料。)”可知,设空处强调的是喂番茄苗的饲料。E选项“Or you can make your own homemade organic liquid fertilizer.(或者你也可以自制有机液体肥料。)”

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (贫困).

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words. A bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly. When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” he said. “I gave my money to a poor family, who seemed to be badly in need of help. I think I can wait for my books until next New Year.”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” Edward can’t believe it! “I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help people around you!” his father added. Holding the books, Edward felt they were the best gift in the world.

A. Canada. B. Ghana. C. Brazil. D. Japan.
B
A Their gentle character.
First, happy workers enjoy the daily activities of their jobs, and they look forward to the workday.
A how to be a successful businessman
B. how to help people in difficulties
C. how to get along with the coolest people
D. how to become a happy worker
11. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Some people believe that only a few kinds of jobs can really make people feel happy.
B. The writer of the passage tells us that many different kinds of work can be enjoyable.
C. The author of Be Happy at Work thinks that happiness at work is really important.
D. Joanne Gordon believes that people will probably be happy at work when they are proud of what they do.

One pleasant New-year morning Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry.
