Gabby Douglas was just 16 when she caught the world’s attention at the Olympics where she won gold in the all-around event. From her early days on the gym floor to her life after finding Olympic fame, the change of Gabby Douglas has been quite the stunning one indeed.
Gabby Douglas’ talent for gymnastics was apparent from a young age. At the tender age of three, the younger Douglas was turning cartwheels. Just two years after beginning her formal gymnastics training. Douglas won Virginia’s state gymnastics championship. She gained more wins over the years, and it was soon evident that she wasn’t just a talented gymnast, but a possible Olympic competitor.
At the age of 14, Gabby Douglas knew that for her to make it to the Olympics, she needed a change. She’d already been homeschooled for years to focus on her training, and she set her sights on training with Liang Chow, a coach who has worked with Shawn Johnson. But Chow’s gym was in West Des Moines, Iowa — not exactly within commuting distance of her home in Virginia. Moving halfway across the country was not easy for the young Gabby Douglas. She felt seriously out of place as one of few black people there.
Douglas also felt much anxiety about chasing her Olympic dream. It would be years before Douglas opened up about the fears she faced on her road to the Olympics. She once said, “When I started this journey, I never knew what it took to get to the Olympics. I had a lot of self-doubt. You have to believe that you’re good enough and not give up.”
Douglas eventually found the determination to stick with her dream, no matter how tough the journey. Not only did she help her team win gold, but she also won gold in the all-around — making her the first black woman to do so. She said, “It was unbelievable that I had spent my whole life dreaming about this one specific goal and achieved it.”
4. What made Douglas decide to have a change at 14?
A. Her Olympic dream. B. Her talent for gymnastics.
C. Her desire to train with Liang Chow. D. Her tiredness of being homeschooled.
5. Why was Douglas anxious when chasing her dream?
A. She thought she was not talented enough.
B. She had to compete with Shawn Johnson.
C. She didn’t like the training methods in Iowa.
D. She was uncertain about how to get to the Olympics.
6. What words can be used to best describe Douglas?
A. Talented but crazy. B. Fearless but bad-tempered.
C. Optimistic and determined. D. Pessimistic and independent.
7. What can we learn from Douglas’s story?
A. Care and diligence bring happiness. B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Ups and downs make one strong. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
C
“Greetings from the Family”, a song by Robert Keen, tells the tale of a festive get-together. Many listeners will recognize the chaos (混乱) the singer describes; even more than that, they will definitely identify with his struggle to recall how he is related to the various guests. “Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen,” Mr. Keen sings, “Can’t remember how I’m a relative of theirs.”
That may have something to do with the English language. It is often joked that anyone around your age is a “cousin” and anyone older is an “uncle” or “aunt”. English is rather bare in its terms for family members. Other languages pay far more attention to the details.
Take “brother” and “sister” for instance. Societies that value age-order highly often have different terms for older brother, older sister, younger brother and younger sister. These are ge, jie, di and mei in Chinese or ani, ane, ototo, imoto in Japanese.
Chinese even requires the speakers to remember whether a relative is older or younger than they are, whether relatives of their parents are older or younger than they, and so on. There are many armchair theories about the relationship between language and culture that do not hold up to careful examination. The East Asian languages’ focus on seniority (年长), however, is actually related to the importance Confucianism places on the virtue of respecting your elders.
Actually, all languages permit you to describe relationships in any amount of detail your listener would like. The focus that some cultures put on labelling every possible relation with a distinct term does not mean that cultures lacking those terms do not pay attention to family networks. Every English-speaking family seems to have at least one member who can sort out the complicated relations and tell you that Henry Ford was a great-great-great uncle. But each family also has members who couldn’t care less, waving a hand and saying “uncle” or “cousin”.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By criticizing a forgetful guest. B. By praising a recognized singer.
C. By illustrating a shared experience. D. By describing a chaotic picture.
9. Why does the author mention the examples of Chinese and Japanese?
A. To indicate their respect for the elders. B. To make a contrast with English language.
C. To illustrate the influence of Confucianism. D. To give an analysis of East Asian languages.
10. What does “armchair theories” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Baseless assumptions. B. Detailed descriptions.
C. Contradictory thoughts. D. Convincing explanations.
11. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Labelling every relation is no easy.
B. English speakers value family networks as well.
C. Some people enjoy sorting out complicated relations.
D. General terms for relatives indicate weaker family bond.

Robots that can cook are in growing demand in the United States. The increased demand comes at a time when restaurants are trying to improve efficiency and reduce wait times during peak hours.
In a few weeks, White Castle restaurants will test a robot arm that can cook French fries and other foods. The robot, called Flippy, is a product of Mis o Robotics, a company based in Pasadena, California.
Robot food service was becoming popular even before the concept of peak dining hours. Hospitals, college dining areas and other places tried to meet demand for food while keeping labor costs low. Robot chefs appeared at places like Creator, a restaurant in San Francisco. Now, some say, robots may become necessary for the food service industry. “I expect in the next two years you will see much more robotic adoption (采纳) in the food space because of the need for efficiency,” Jain said.
Some people say, robots can lower the demand for labor. At the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, cafe workers used to spend six hours per day making salads, notes Tonya Johnson, the school’s director of nutrition services. But two years ago, the university added a Sally, a kind of robot that now makes around 40 salads per day. By adding Sally, the school was able to cut a job opening in its cooking staff, Johnson said. “I think the need for efficiency has made us realize how much we need more equipment like Sally,” Johnson said.
Miso Robotics co- founder and chief Buck Jordan said fast food restaurants are already having trouble finding workers, partly as a result of a losing population of young workers. Jordan added that his company’s position is that “automation (自动化) is not a choice”. He added, “You must automate in order to survive in the future.”
12. Why is robot food service becoming popular?
A. It can take the place of human beings in the future.
B. It can shorten the distance between workers and customers.
C. It can meet the demand for food and reduce the cost of labor.
D. It can make different kinds of delicious food in a very short time.
13. What does Johnson say about Sally?
A. It makes as many salads as workers. B. It is just a common robot like others.
C. It is useless to improve the speed of work. D. It helps the school employ fewer workers.
14. What’s Jordan’s attitude to automation?
A. Worried. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The popularity of robots in the food space.
B. The debate about using robots in restaurants.
C. More demand for robot cooks in US restaurants.
D. The difficulties in finding enough labor workers.

Amy stared sadly out of the bus window. It was her first field trip as a student of her new school. When her parents sold their farm and moved to town, Amy had been enthusiastic. But at her new school, she felt extremely shy around so many strangers. Worse still, she missed all her animals on the farm.
With a sigh, Amy returned to the present. The bus stopped, and Amy climbed off with the rest of her classmates. “Welcome to the Nature Center,” her teacher, Mrs Brown, announced. “Shortly, a guide will give us a presentation about the area’s native animals and habitat. Afterwards, you’ll be given a worksheet to complete while you explore the rest of the center. Now, everyone, find a partner.”
Amy looked worried. She didn’t have any friends yet… She hesitated for a moment and then approached Janet, an outgoing and confident girl who sat near her in class. “Could I be your partner?” Amy asked carefully.
“Sure,” said Janet warmly. “I’ll get the worksheet.”
After listening to the presentation, the girls examined their worksheets. “It says we must help feed the baby squirrels (松鼠). How big is a baby squirrel? Can we hold one?” said Janet excitedly, not waiting to hear Amy’s response.
When Amy and Janet walked into the squirrel area, they were greeted by an enthusiastic voice. “Hi. I’m John Smith, the keeper here. Did you come to see the squirrels?”
“Yes, ” said Amy with an eager smile on her face. “Do we actually get to feed the babies?”
“Sure, ” John answered and then showed the girls how to wrap a baby squirrel in a towel and hold the bottle of warm milk. Amy settled back into a chair, enjoying the warmth of the tiny animal in her hand. She flashed a smile over at Janet, who was suddenly silent and focusing on her own baby squirrel. As a city- girl completely inexperienced in the handling of animals, Janet was feeling nervous.
Then John asked, “Would you like to feed the adult squirrels?” Amy volunteered immediately.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When John opened the cage, the squirrel inside suddenly jumped out.

【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. D

Many listeners will recognize the chaos (混乱) the singer describes; even more than that, they will definitely identify with his struggle to recall how he is related to the various guests. “Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen,” Mr. Keen sings, “Can’t remember how I’m a relative of theirs.” 以及第二段“That may have something to do with the English language. It is often joked that anyone around your age is a “cousin” and anyone older is an “uncle” or “aunt”.
根据第二段“English is rather bare in its terms for family members. Other languages pay far more attention to the details. (英语对家庭成员来说是相当贫乏的。其他语言更注重细节。)”和第三段“Take “brother” and “sister” for instance. Societies that value age-order highly often have different terms for older brother, older sister, younger brother and younger sister. These are ge, jie, di and mei in Chinese or ani, ane, ototo, imoto in Japanese. (以“兄弟”和“姐妹”为例。高度重视年龄秩序的社会通常对哥哥、姐姐、弟弟和妹妹有不同的称呼。中文分别是“哥”、“姐”、“弟”、“没”,日语是“ani”、“ane”、“ototo”、“imoto”。)”可知,作者提到了中国人和日本人的例子是为了和英语作对比,故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Chinese even requires the speakers to remember whether a relative is older or younger than they are, whether relatives of their parents are older or younger than they, and so on. (汉语甚至要求说话者记住亲戚比自己大还是小,父母的亲戚比自己大还是小,等等。关于语言和文化之间的关系,有许多纸上谈兵的理论是经不起仔细检验的。)”可知,这些描述是经不起仔细检验的,故猜测这里的“armchair theories”是一些没有根据的假设,故选A。
【11题详解】

Every English-speaking family seems to have at least one member who can sort out the complicated relations and tell you that Henry Ford was a great- great- great uncle.

The keeper nodded in agreement and asked Amy, “Would you be interested in volunteering to help out with the animals at the center?” “Interested?”“I would love to work here! What an opportunity!”Amy was excited.
On the way back that afternoon, Janet sat next to Amy, looking at her admiringly. A rush of newfound happiness washed over her.
