Dan Mancina is a skateboarder whose jaw-dropping videos get hundreds of
thousands of views. Mancina also happens to be blind, and videos of him using his white
cane (手杖) as he skateboards have gained admiration from fans around the world.
“I’ve lost my vision slowly throughout my life,"Mancina said. It wasn’t until his
mid-20s that his condition—an eye disease started to affect his day-to-day life, stopping
him from driving and biking. The Michigan native started skating at seven, and got into it
more seriously at 13, saying the sport helps him express himself. He stopped skating for a
couple of years. This period, the 35-year-old said, was his “lowest point”.
However, mobility training helped him gain confidence. Slowly, he returned to doing
what he loved. Mancina started filming short videos of his progress and posting them
online and met a new group of people to skate with, gaining enough confidence to return
to the streets. “I was just actually trying it, and then realized I was still the same person
and that I could still do all the things that I love,” he said.
Now, Mancina wants to create spaces where visually impaired (视力受损的) people
can enjoy the sport. “I wanted to build the first skatepark designed for visually impaired
people, so I started a foundation called ‘Keep Pushing’ and have been raising money ever
since for a few years now,” he said. The park, set to be built in Michigan, will use
adaptive methods, such as increasing the size of obstacles, to make it safe and accessible.
“To change the perception of the visually impaired, I started my social media stuff.
Some people think it’s crazy for a blind people to skate. It’s not that crazy in my head. I
just enjoy skating. I encourage people to think that way—don't let other people decide
what you can and can't do. You know. It's all up to you,”Mancina added.

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had
last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do
this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time,
researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AIsystem called Stable
Diffusion to re-create images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US
which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000
photos The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI功能性
磁共振成像).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow
shown by the fMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to
it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned
how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same
participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person
looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an
image of a very blurry airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image”
model and make the image clearer by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”, The final
images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the
researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to
“decipher (解码) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science
magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record
imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other
animals perceive reality.
28. What do we know about Stable Diffusion?
A. It can help train people’s minds.
B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created to draw people’s brains.
D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
29. How did the AI system learn about human brain activity?
A. By recording brain scans from participants.
B. By analyzing descriptions of human thoughts
C. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
D. By examining 10,000 photos about human brains.
30. What does the underlined word “blurry” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Unclear. B. Striking. C. Factual. D. Unusual.
31. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists?
A. To help understand our dreams. B. To improve text-to-image models.
C. To create more accurate brain scans. D. To learn how animals view the world.
D
Warming seas across the globe are endangering coral reefs (珊瑚礁), a key
ecosystem that supports sea life to live and thrive (繁荣).
As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and
revived (复苏) groups of adult corals for the first time, according to a recent study.
Freezing biological materials, or “cryopreserving” them, refers to keeping them in a deep
freeze for long periods without affecting the cell’s viability (活性) according to the
Science Times website. This method usually cools them to very low temperatures,
commonly to-196 C. Since cells would normally die at such a low temperature due to the
formation of ice inside, scientists need to monitor the freezing rate and choose the

freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces of a common
coral in Hawai. After removing the microbes on the corals, they sealed (密封) the corals
in metal containers filled with a chemical solution that partially dehydrated them and
helped control ice growth.
When the corals reached a temperature of around -200 C, the remaining water in the
coral solidified into a glassy form. The corals were still alive, with their life-driving
functions becoming extremely slow. After being cryopreserved for a few minutes, the
researchers pulled the corals out and placed them in warm water. In two minutes, they
started consuming oxygen— a sign of them staying alive.
Previously, researchers had already successfully cryopreserved coral larvae (幼虫)
according to a study in 2018. However, the larvae can only be collected when corals
spawn (产卵), which happens just a few nights each year,“That’s putting a lot of eggs in
one basket.” Us marine scientist Liza Roger told Science News.
This breakthrough offers more hope to the world’s corals, said Roger. However,
there’s more work to be. A few days after melting, the corals became “stressed out” from
the process and were killed by the bacteria they normally live in harmony with. The
researchers are working on using antibiotics (抗生素) to help them survive for a longer
period of time.
32. What is the purpose of the recent study?
A. To control coral growth. B. To help preserve coral reefs.
C. To freeze and revive coral larvae. D. To bring dead corals back to life.
33. What happened to the corals when they were cryopreserved?
A. They became lifeless. B. They consume more oxygen
C. Their life functions slowed down. D. They remained alive and unchanged
34. What does Roger think about cryopreserving coral larvae?
A. It seems an unreliable solution. B. It needs a large number of eggs.
C. It fuels more studies on the eggs. D. It excites hope for restoring corals.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. To Live, or to Thrive B. “Cool” Idea to Save Coral Reefs
C. Freezing “Life” From Distinction D. Scientists Make an Unusual Discovery

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的
短文。
My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of
life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything
bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for
two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we
felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned
to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today,
Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was
closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for
an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We
spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was
closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to
be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the
help of great resources , I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every
situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for
order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports.
My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy
his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things
happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that
good things really were happening to him.

1.所续写短文的词数应为 150左右;

参考范文:
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at
school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked
what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something
good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about
fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the teacher’
s desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just
consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he
kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I
witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a
struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get
used to seeing the cup of life as half full.
