If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the use-by date printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away. But is that really necessary? According to a report, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what use-by dates actually mean and they think the food is not safe to eat.
Use-by dates were introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.
However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates aren’t related to the danger of food poisoning (中毒). Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, cookies may lose their delicious taste, but they are not harmful.
“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts from a US food testing company. Even workers in the food factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. “We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won’t waste a lot of food.”
But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. As a result, food factory officials are now thinking about turning the use-by date into a date which can show when food is most likely to be thrown away.
26.What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.Every year most factories produce too much food for people.
B.People throw away food because they think it is unsafe to eat.
C.It’s necessary for people to throw away tons of food every year.
D.The use-by dates are wrongly printed, so people throw away food.
27.Which of the following information can describe the use-by date?
A.SN66015972306795500
B.B.806725A166949
C.BETTER IF USED BY Apr. 11th, 2023

Jordan took a deep breath as he looked in at the basketball court. “Maybe today I’ll make history,” he thought.
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program (记录单). It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. “Devin, look!” he said to his friend, “You see who has the all-time record? My dad! 24 points! But he never told me that!” “24 points?” Devin said. “That’s great.” Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’s top scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them. His dad laughed. “I had quite a game that day,” he said. “But look at the score. I prefer to give away all my points for a win.” Jordan didn’t notice his dad’s team had lost by one point in that game.
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands (击掌) with his teammates and started to warm up. The court filled up quickly. Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan had led his team to beat the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that?
Jordan became more confident when he hit the first 2 shots (投篮). The Lions called a break (叫暂停). “Great start,” Coach said. “But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us.” He was right. By half-time, the Lions had pulled ahead (反超), 27-24. Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, “Great work!” But Jordan didn’t feel as confident as before.
11 seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS:51. BADGERS: 51. Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. “Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re open.” Jordan looked at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other. “Me?” Jordan mouthed. Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another shot would break the record. And it was the right time to do it!
Jordan moved right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket. The viewers started counting the seconds, “Four… three… two.” Jordan prepared to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin. Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. “You still have the record,” he told his dad. Dad smiled. “You’ve got something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations on your history!”

阅读下面短文从短文后所给的六个选项中选出四个可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
When a friend is going through a difficult time, it’s natural to want to help, but it’s not always easy to know how. Think about situations where you’ve been in need. 37 What did you find the most helpful? The following are ways that you can really help a friend in need.
Only offer help that you are truly able to give. 38 When your friends are unhappy, it’s normal (正常的) to want to make everything all right for them, but think a little about the reality (现实) of what you’re offering before you open your mouth.
39 Offer your help, but if they refuse, then accept that. It may be that they truly don’t want or need your help. That doesn’t mean you needn’t offer help again. It’s simply about respecting what they say about their needs at the time.
Don’t assume (认为) you know what’s best for them. However they are struggling (抗争), your friends need to make their own decisions. When people are going through difficult times, they may feel that what is happening is out of their control. 40
Listen more than you talk. Avoid repeatedly giving your opinion on their situation unless they ask for it. They may want a sympathetic (富有同情心的) ear. It’s best if you can keep your feelings under control. You may feel angry about what your friend is dealing with, but you will be more helpful if you can keep calm as you listen.

B.Don’t force your help on them.
