While other children were just starting their ABCs, three-year-old Mark Swallow was already reading Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. By the age of seven he was speaking fluent French and German and studying both Latin and Greek. Now, at the age of 12, Mark has just started a university degree in English literature.
Mark and other child geniuses will be the subject of a new documentary series which takes a look into the lives of these remarkable children and their families. In the programmes we will meet children like eight-year-old Daniel Manning, who wrote his first book when he was just five and who has just signed a f 60,000 contract with a publishing house to write three novels. Then there is 12-year-old Samantha Price, who started piano lessons when she was three. Along with the piano, she now also plays the cello, clarinet and classical guitar. She has already played with three top European orchestras. And how about ten-year-old Jordan Welsh? She first picked up a paint brush before she could talk. She has already had an exhibition of her paintings in one of London’s top art galleries and has just won a major prize for one of her paintings.
Over the next six weeks we will see what it is that makes these children so special. We will find out how and when their parents knew they were different and about the changes it made to their family life. We will hear from the children about their hopes and plans for the future. Hello and welcome to my blog!
My name is Naomi. I am 16 years old. For the past two months, I have been living in Southampton, England, as an exchange student.
I arrived in Southampton on July 13. It felt unreal to think about living in a new country and in a new family for one year. On my first day, my host mum Tracy showed me around the neighborhood, and we drove down to the sea. The weather was great, and everything looked beautiful.
My school started the week after. I had chosen my subjects before. I had to do English and Math, and I chose History, Geography and Film Studies. The Itchen Sixth Form College is a big school with about 2,000 students who are between the ages of 16 and 19. My school day starts at 8:40 and ends at 15:30. During the week, I don’t do that much with my free time. Sometimes, I stay in school a little longer to talk with my friends, and then I go home and do my homework.
Due to COVID-19, students take only two classes per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In this way, we don’t have to change rooms very often and won’t need to walk too close to one another in the narrow hallways. All the teachers are really nice and supportive.
The school used to organize trips to London or Winchester for its exchange students. However, because of COVID-19, everything is canceled right now. That’s why we have planned some day trips ourselves! A few weeks ago, I went with some of my friends to Portsmouth, a seaside city about an hour’s drive from Southampton. We visited the Spinnaker Tower and saw the city from above. The view was magnificent.
So, this has been my first two months in England. I hope you enjoyed reading my first entry. I am looking forward to telling you about all of the experiences I have over the coming months.

He wanted me, his only son, to cook with him, but I didn’t like cooking. Because of the restaurant, my father was always busy. He never had time to play football with me.
During my high school and college years, I worked with my family at night. But I always avoided the kitchen. I couldn’t wait to graduate so that I could move away from the family business. Several days before my graduation day, my father and I started looking at new cars. Finally, we found the right car, I was sure that my father would give it to me as my graduation gift.
On my graduation day, my father gave me a book as a gift. It was his old cookbook. I was so angry that I gave it back to him and ran out of the house. Several days later I moved away and started my business. Although I often saw my father during holidays, we never talked about the graduation gift. Then one day, I got a call that my father was ill. I went to see him because I was very worried.

(23-24八年级上·上海宝山·期中)The Best Language for Learning Math What is the best language for learning math? Hint: You are not reading it
Chinese, Japanese and Korean all have simpler number words. They express math concepts (概念) more clearly than English. The language gap has drawn lots of attention. Several recent studies have linked weaker math abilities in English-speaking children to English number words.
Chinese, for example, has just ten basic number words. English, however, has more than two dozen. The trouble starts at “11”. English has a word (“eleven”) for that number. Chinese, Japanese and Korean have words that can be translated as “ten-one”—spoken with the “ten” first. That makes it easier for children to understand the place value. Student can easily see the number system is based on units of 10.
English number words over 10 don’t make the place value clear. Words for numbers 13 to19 change the order of the ones and tens. Children are more likely to confuse (困惑) 17 with 71. Therefore, children working with English number words have a harder time doing complex (复杂的) calculations. They make more mistakes.
It also feels more natural for Chinese speakers than for English speakers to use the “make-a-ten” method. When adding two number, Chinese students often break down the numbers into parts and regroup them into tens and ones. For example, 9 plus 5 becomes 9 plus 1 plus 4. This method greatly helps students work out math problems. Many teachers in America are teaching their students the “make-a-ten” method. However, they are having a hard time because of the confusing English number words.
Now, you should feel lucky that you are learning math in China. Thanks to your mother language, all the math problems have become less difficult and less confusing.
1.According to the article, several recent studies have found a relationship between English number words and _______.
A.Weaker math abilities in young learners of English B.Weaker math abilities in English-speaking children
C.Stronger math abilities in young learners of English D.Stronger math abilities in English-speaking children
2.According to the article, how many basic number words are there in English?
A.Ten. B.Eleven. C.More than a dozen. D.More than two dozen.
3.The first three paragraphs mainly talk about_______.
A.why Asian languages can make math learning easier. B.why Asian are better at math than English speakers.
C.how Asian children do basic calculations within ten. D.how children’s math abilities are judged in different. countries.
4.According to the article, if you use the “make-a-ten” method to work out math problems, 8 plus 7 will become ________.
A.6 + 2 + 7 B.7 + 1 + 7 C.8 + 1 + 6 D.8 + 2 + 5
5.The underlined expression “Thanks to” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “_______.”
A.Instead of B.Because of C.According to D.In addition to

(23-24八年级上·上海静安·期中)The Internet is a big place. Nobody has the time to look at every web page to find something. Yahoo can help us to find what we need.
David Filo and Jerry Yang, two Stanford University students, started Yahoo in 1994. They started by making a list of their favorite web pages. When their list got bigger, they made a database(数据库) to keep their information. They let everybody use it for free. Soon, thousands of people began to use their service.
They then made a new kind of software. It would take some information and arrange it for someone to look at. (23-24八年级上·上海青浦·期中)Most of our life is a habit. Habits, good or bad, make you who you are. If you know how to change your habits, then even a small effort (努力) can create big changes. Here are some tips for getting you started.
One Habit for 30 Days. You pay attention to one change for thirty days. After that time it has become a habit. I’ve used this for most of my habit changes. It really works.
One Habit at a time. A month may seem like a long time for only one change, but I’ve found that trying to change a few habits at a time is reckless. Multitasking (多任务) often means none becomes habits.
Experiment. You can’t know whether a different habit will work until you try it. Mix around with key habits until you find the ones that suit you. Don’t try to follow habits because you should, but because you’ve tested them and they work in your life.
Keep it Simple. Your change should include one or two rules, not a dozen. Exercising once per day for at least thirty minutes is easier to follow than exercising on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays with yoga (瑜伽) the first day and mountain biking the third day.
The best way to break bad habits is to know you have the confidence to do so. Want to learn more? Click here. www.xsjedu.org/

What’s My Line?
“One of my actors is sick! He has just one line and you’re the only one who fits his clothes!” One afternoon, the school drama director suddenly shouted to me. She looked so nervous and worried that I felt sorry for her and said, “OK”.
“You will be fine. It’s easy!” She said. But it wasn’t easy at all. On the stage, four other actors and actresses spoke their lines, and I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. I couldn’t even breathe. I just wanted to leave. The next thing I knew, I was running off the stage.
When I was running off the stage, I accidentally knocked over a glass of grape juice that was on a table. The purple juice hit the girl next to me — Andrea, the leading actress of the drama. She gave me a nasty look. I thought she was going to kill me!
But then, Andrea quickly said, “Darling, you’re so silly! Let’s toast (干杯) to my darling’s silliness! Cheers!” She quickly took another glass of grape juice and drank it. The other actors quickly followed Andrea’s lead and saved the scene. The audience (观众) thought my mistake was part of the play!
I said sorry to everyone after the play. To my surprise, they were not angry with me. They told me, “It’s all a part of being on stage.” I could be wrong, but I think I liked being on stage. I think I will try again.

(21-22八年级上·上海虹口·期中)Will the corona virus bike boom lead to greener cities?
The corona virus pandemic has led to an explosion of interest in bikes and biking. As the pandemic was continuing to spread, people began looking for ways of getting around that didn’t involve crowded forms of public transportation. Because biking happens in the open air, and the chance of catching the corona virus while riding is very low, biking is seen as a safe way to travel.
In many places, governments are encouraging bike use. In Italy, for example, the government is offering up to $575 for people to buy new bikes, while France will chip in (补助) $55 to help riders with their bike repair costs.
Biking has also grown more popular because it’s one of the few forms of exercise that has been allowed during many lockdowns. With gyms and fitness centers shut down, biking fills a need for many active people.
Families appreciate biking, too. With schools closed, and kids unable to hang out with their friends, biking is a welcome activity. For many people, that’s the main point-biking is fun.
But bikes are also practical. Experts say that for people in some cities, roughly 60% of their trips can be made by bike. Many cities are seeing this as an opportunity to make their streets safer and greener. Cities around the world are adding miles and miles of bike lanes to their streets to encourage biking.
New York says it will close off up to loo miles of roads so they can be used by bikers and walkers. Oakland, California plans to close 74 miles to traffic-that’s almost 10% of the streets in the city.
Paris has set up over 400 miles of new bike lanes. Cars and trucks have been banned from 75 miles of streets in Bogota, Colombia. In Milan Italy, 22 miles of its roads have been converted (转变).
Though many of these bike lanes are only being added for the time being, if changes in biking habits become permanent, they could seriously cut down car traffic and help make cities a lot greener.

(22-23八年级上·上海徐汇·期中)Choose the best answer.(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案。)

1.According to the passage, biking has grown popular because _________.
①biking is a safe way to travel during the pandemic
②biking is much cheaper than public transportation
③governments are encouraging people to use bikes

B.people who want to get exercise and keep fit can ride a bike
C.the Italian government is giving more than $575 for people to buy new bikes
D.the French government is offering $55 to encourage people to buy new bikes
3.Which of the following cities has made the biggest effort towards adding new bike lanes?
