But there are slight differences between British and American English in vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and grammar. The first difference between British and American English is in vocabulary. Almost all of the words used in British English and American English are exactly the same. Only a very small number of words are used disparately. For example, Americans would say “apartment”, but the British would say “flat” to talk about the place where they live. In addition to some common words, many idiomatic (惯用的) expressions are different. In England people might say “I’ll ring you up tonight”, but in the US, people might say “I’ll call you up tonight”. The second difference between British and American English is in pronunciation. The main difference in pronunciation concerns the vowels (元音). Some American dialects and some British dialects use vowels in different ways. Sometimes, Americans and the British don’t understand each other’s pronunciation. But most of the time, the British and Americans do understand each other’s pronunciation because most of the sounds of the two dialects are the same. The third difference is very small. This is the difference in spelling. A few types of words are spelled differently in British and American English. The most common example is in a word like “center”. In British English, this word would be spelled C-E-N-T-R-E, while in American English the same word would be spelled C-E-N-T-E-R. Another example is “or” vs “our”. The word “color” is spelled C-O-L-O-U-R in Britain but C-O-L-O-R in the US. There are a few differences in grammar, too. The British may say “Have you got...?” while Americans prefer “Do you have...?” An American might say “my friend just arrived”, but a British would say “my friend has just arrived”. Sometimes function words are used differently: the British may say “at the weekend”, but Americans would say “on the weekend”. 4. What is this passage mainly about? A. The development of American English. B. Differences between British and American English. C. The influences of British English on American English. D. The causes of the differences between British and American English. 5. What does the underlined word “disparately” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Frequently. B. Regularly. C. Eventually. D. Differently. 6. Why do Americans and the British find it hard to understand each other’s pronunciation? A. There are different ways of using vowels. B. They use different idiomatic expressions. C. There are differences in grammar. D. There are differences in spelling. 7. Which of the following words probably belong to the American English vocabulary? a-flavour b-theater c-humor d-centre e-kilometer f-honour g-color A. abce B. bcde C. bceg D. defg 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英式英语和美式英语在词汇、发音、拼写和语法方面的细微差异。 【4题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容及第一段“British English and American English are almost the same. But there are slight differences between British and American English in vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and grammar.(英式英语和美式英语几乎是相同的。但是,在词汇、发音、拼写和语法方面,英式英语和美式英语之间存在一些细微的差别)”可知,文章主要介绍了英式英语和美式英语在词汇、发音、拼写和语法方面的差异。因此,文章的主旨是讲述这两种英语之间的差异。故选B。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Almost all of the words used in British English and American English are exactly the same.(几乎所有的英式英语和美式英语中使用的单词都是完全相同的)”及划线词后“For example, Americans would say “apartment”, but the British would say “flat” to talk about the place where they live. In addition to some common words, many idiomatic (惯用的) expressions are different. In England people might say “I’ll ring you up tonight”, but in the US, people might say “I’ll call you up tonight”.(例如,美国人会说“apartment”(公寓),而英国人会说“flat”来指他们居住的地方。除了某些常用的单词之外,许多惯用表达也有所不同。在英格兰,人们可能会说“I’ll ring you up tonight”(我今晚给你打电话),而在美国,人们可能会说“I’ll call you up tonight”)”可知,英式英语和美式英语中使用的单词几乎完全相同,只有极少数单词使用方式不同,disparately应与same意思相反,因此可以推断出disparately的意思是“不同地”。故选D。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The main difference in pronunciation concerns the vowels (元音). Some American dialects and some British dialects use vowels in different ways. Sometimes, Americans and the British don’t understand each other’s pronunciation.(发音上的主要差异在于元音的使用。一些美式方言和一些英式方言在使用元音时有不同的方式。有时候,美国人和英国人可能无法理解对方的发音)”可知,美式英语和英式英语在一些方言中使用元音的方式不同,所以有时美国人和英国人听不懂对方的发音。故选A。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“The most common example is in a word like ‘center’. In British English, this word would be spelled C-E-N-T-R-E, while in American English the same word would be spelled C-E-N-T-E-R. Another example is ‘or’ vs ‘our’. The word ‘color’ is spelled C-O-L-O-U-R in Britain but C-O-L-O-R in the US.(最常见的例子是在像“center”这样的词中。在英式英语中,这个词会被拼写为C-E-N-T-R-E,而在美式英语中,同样的词则会被拼写为C-E-N-T-E-R。另一个例子是“or”与“our”的区别。“color”这个词在英国被拼写为C-O-L-O-U-R,而在美国则被拼写为C-O-L-O-R)”可知,center在美式英语中拼写为center,而在英式英语中拼写为centre;color在美式英语中拼写为color,而在英式英语中拼写为colour。因此可以推断出b.theater,c.humor,e.kilometer,g.color属于美式英语词汇,而a.flavour,d.centre,f.honour属于英式英语词汇。故选C。 C Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young. In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking, also known as jingju, Opera is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience. The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技). Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff. “Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theater. “I feel today’s performance is very special,” Zhang added. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience. “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said. According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added. 8. Why is adaptation and innovation of traditional opera important? A. To run after fashion. B. To attract the young audience. C. To improve digital stage effect. D. To change the traditional opera circle. 9. Which of the following can best describe Tianleyuan Theater? A. A destroyer of Peking Opera. B. An objector of modern opera. C. A pioneer of innovative opera. D. A defender of traditional opera. 10. How does Deng feel about the innovation of jingju? A. Favourable. B. Unreliable. C. Worthless. D. Conservative. 11. Which one can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Traditional Opera Is Dying Out B. The Future of the Traditional Opera Is Promising C. The Performers of the Traditional Opera Are Supporting Jingju D. Traditional Opera Circle Is Innovating to Attract Young Audience 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是传统戏剧用创新和改编的办法,顺应时代潮流,吸引年轻观众。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。 根据文章第一段“Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works.(对传统戏曲的改编和创新是近年来中国戏剧界的一个重要趋势。为了吸引新一代的年轻观众,跟上时代的步伐,传统歌剧界努力创作新的作品。)”可知,对传统戏曲进行创新和改编主要是为了吸引年轻人也来观看,故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).(有着百年历史的北京天乐园剧院引进了流行的京剧表演。京剧结合了器乐、声乐、哑剧、舞蹈和杂技。)”和第四段“Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.(天乐园设有京剧艺术体验区和时尚表演区。据剧院工作人员说,它吸引了2000多名观众,其中大部分是年轻人。)”可知,天乐园剧院率先进行了改革,所以它是创新戏剧的先驱,故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience.(邓认为,创新或许是京剧应对观众老龄化问题的最佳方式。)”可知,他认为创新或许是京剧应对受众老龄化问题的最佳方式,并且可以帮助传统艺术走得更远。 由此可知,他认为对京剧进行创新是有帮助的。故选A。 11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young.(对传统戏曲的改编和创新是近年来中国戏剧界的一个重要趋势。为了吸引新一代的年轻观众,跟上时代的步伐,传统歌剧界努力创作新的作品。近年来,传统戏曲经历了时代和社会的变迁。它逐渐失去了主要的老年观众,对年轻人也没有吸引力。)”和第二段“In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking, also known as jingju, Opera is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.(为了寻找新的机会,使用现代声音、灯光和数字舞台效果,中国传统的京剧,也被称为京剧,以一种时尚和创新的方式吸引年轻人,因为这门经典艺术面临着老龄化的观众。)”可知,文章主要讲的是传统戏剧用创新和改编的办法,顺应时代潮流,吸引年轻观众,因此最恰当的标题是D选项“Traditional Opera Circle Is Innovating to Attract Young Audience(传统戏曲圈创新吸引年轻观众)”,故选D。 D Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA. Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years. Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells. When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer. The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change. 12. What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants? A. To produce more roots and shoots. B. To increase the overall lifetime of the plant. C. To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake. D. To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on. 13. What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text? A. They are relatively abundant in quantity. B. They are resistant to environmental stresses. C. They make quick response to DNA damage. D. They have the ability to repair damaged DNA. 14. What does the underlined word “propagation” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Spread. B. Change. C. Existence. D. Self-repair. 15. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The way of dealing with climate change on the earth. B. The significance of identifying the protective system in plants. C. The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress. D. The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress. 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了科学家们已经展示了植物如何保护自己免受环境压力造成的遗传损害,即植物拥有内建机制,来阻止干细胞中的基因缺陷遗传下去。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.(植物的根和芽的生长尖端有一个内置的机制,如果检测到DNA损伤,就会导致细胞死亡,从而避免将有缺陷的DNA传递给下一代)”可知,植物内建机制的功能是阻止干细胞中的基因缺陷遗传下去。故选D。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.(通过涉及x射线和化学物质的实验,他们发现干细胞比其他细胞对DNA损伤更敏感)”可知,植物中的干细胞对DNA损伤做出快速反应。故选C。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the”以及后文“of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues”可知,当DNA受损时,细胞有能力检测到它,并导致程序化细胞死亡,防止受损的遗传密码传播到植物组织的其他部分。故划线词意思是“传播”。故选A。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.(在植物中发现类似的保护系统在植物发育领域具有重要意义。它还帮助科学家培育出能够更好地应对环境压力的植物。因此,了解植物如何应对这些压力对农业科学应对气候变化具有重要意义)”可知,最后一段的重点是识别植物保护系统的意义。故选B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 While happiness is what most people pursue for a life-long time, many still find it easier to lose than to gain. ____16____? A There are different ways of using vowels. B. They use different idiomatic expressions. C. There are differences in grammar. D. There are differences in spelling. 7. Which of the following words probably belong to the American English vocabulary? a-flavour b-theater c-humor d-centre e-kilometer f-honour g-color A. abce B. bcde C. bceg D. defg C Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. Traditional Opera Circle Is Innovating to Attract Young Audience D Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 While happiness is what most people pursue for a life-long time, many still find it easier to lose than to gain. ____16____?
