He wears a suit and a tie. He is always polite. He’ll smile at you when he says “Good afternoon”. He travels a lot. He is a “man of the world”. He is interested in different cultures and speaks different languages. He likes sports, both playing and watching.
Who is he? He’s an English gentleman (绅士)!
The great Irish writer Oscar Wilde said that a gentleman is never impolite to anybody, even without wanting to be!
In the past, a gentleman in England was a man from a good family. He went to one of the best schools and he was rich and smart. He didn’t need to work. These days, however, “gentleman” means any kind and polite man. “You’re a gentleman.” means “You’re a nice person!”
So it seems that the English gentleman is quite old-fashioned (老派的). Is there still such a person today? Well, the UK’s magazine Country Life says there is. The magazine writes about how to be a “modern gentleman”. Its advice includes turning oft your phone at dinner and singing well in churches (教堂)!
31 The first paragraph tells us what a gentleman wears and likes.
32. A gentleman will also get angry easily if others do something wrong.
33. The life for a gentleman was like all the others’ in the past.
34. These days, a gentleman is expected to be a person with kindness and politeness.

Do you know the Dragon King in the novel Journey to the West? He can control rain. When he sneezes (打喷嚏), it rains.
Dragons are common in Chinese culture. We Chinese call ourselves “the descendants (传人) of the dragon”. How often do your parents say “wang zi cheng long”? They say it because they want you to be successful. That means you not only have the ability to control your life but also have much time to have fun.

However, in Western countries, people think differently about dragons. In the West, there is a bad dragon. It has seven heads and eats babies!
Western dragons look like dinosaurs (恐龙). They have wings. In stories, they spit out (吐出) fire and catch women. A man usually becomes famous after killing a dragon.
Because of this, some Chinese experts have suggested changing the English word for Chinese dragons to “Loong”. They believe the word “dragon” makes western people think badly about China.

Research suggests that the seat you choose in the classroom says a lot about you and your personality. For more than seventy years, researchers and teachers have studied the link between the place where students choose to sit in class and what they are like as people and learners. Where do you usually decide to sit? ____71____
____72____ But is this really true? Well, some researchers say it is not. In fact, shy students often choose the back row because it is far away from the teacher and they don’t want to answer questions. At the back, but in big classrooms, it can be hard to see the board and hear what the teacher is saying. This could be the reason why students who sit here often get lower grades on tests and exams. For students with poor eyesight or hearing, the back of the classroom is not a good choice.
Students who sit at the side of the classroom are normally interested in class. However, they like watching and listening rather than joining in. These students are usually also very good at taking notes. Next time you miss a class, borrow notes from someone who sits here.____73____ These people usually get good grades in school and are interested in learning.
____74____ Then the statistics (统计数据). say you probably like your teacher. You probably also have a good relationship with your classmates.Caring, outgoing, and cheerful people usually sit in the middle. They are normally serious about learning and feel disappointed with low grades on tests and exams.
You probably sit right at the front of the class if you're longing for (渴望) knowledge. Students who sit here usually want to discuss things with the teacher and are often very interested in the subject. They want to be in the best place to see and hear everything the teacher does and says.____75____ So, if you really want to hear what everyone says in class, choose a different place to sit.
A. Do you sit in the middle of the classroom?
B. Have you ever really thought about the reasons for your decision?
C. This means it’s a good idea to sit in a different place every day.
D. People often think that students who sit at the back are lazy.
E. On the side of the classroom you will generally find modest and thoughtful people.
F. The only problem with sitting here is that it can be difficult to see and hear what other students do and say in class.

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years. There are only about 5,600 languages all over the world now. And half of them may disappear in the near future. One organization called Wikitongues is trying its best to save these languages.
When a language disappears, many other things can go away as well, like culture and knowledge. Because of this, Wikitongues believes the process of bringing the languages back must be done by speakers themselves.
Started in 2016, Wikitongues is an open Internet collection of world languages. There are more than 400 languages and dialects (方言) available on Wikitongues’ YouTube channel (频道), like English and Chinese, are spoken by millions of people. Others are uncommon. Bora is spoken by only a few thousand people.
More than 1,500 people from 70 different countries have added videos to the channel. Udell, who works for Wikitongues, says there are many examples of languages that disappeared but later returned to use.
“Hebrew died out in the 4th century BC and was revived (复兴) in the 1800s. Now once again, it’s the mother language of millions of people. So, too. We hope so.”
Theron, one of Wikitongues volunteers, lives in Namibia. His mother language is Subiya, which is spoken by about 30, 000 people. “I think my mother language is the first language I learned when I was born,” Theron said.
Theron hopes his work can help keep Subiya from disappearing. And he’s not just sharing his language with others through videos. He is also working hard to create a Subiya dictionary and its teaching materials that can be used in schools.
☆It helps stop a culture from disappearing, because the language has a ____76____ with the culture and knowledge of a society.
☆There are fewer speakers using their mother languages, and most of them communicate in popular languages.
Why it is founded
Wikitongues—Saving the ____77____ Languages
How it ____78____
What it achieves
☆It provides an online platform (平台) for speakers to share their languages, both popular and uncommon.
※The example of Hebrew shows that it’s ____79____ to bring languages back especially uncommon ones.
☆Videos about over 400 languages and dialects are already on Wikitongues’s channel.

In the past, a gentleman in England was a man from a good family. He went to one of the best schools and he was rich and smart. He didn’t need to work. These days, however, “gentleman” means any kind and polite man. “You’re a gentleman.” means “You’re a nice person!”

Chinese dragons are not real. They usually have fantastic power like controlling the weather. The Chinese emperors liked dragons very much. They wore clothes with dragon pictures. They hoped they could have the power, too.
But some don’t agree. They think we have our own culture. Most western people already know the differences between Chinese dragons and western dragons.
36. Why do our parents say “wang zi cheng long”? ________
A. Because they want us to have the same life as dragons.
B. Because they try to make good wishes for our future life.
C. Because they think we will become a person who is very rich.
37. Which of the blanks can be filled with the underlined word “power”? ________

Now once again it’s the mother language of millions of people.

Now I prefer to spend time on my study. In the past, I didn’t like sports at all. But now I’m good at swimming and become much healthier than before.
As for Chinese tea, it is an integral part of our culture. Tea is mainly grown on the mountains. After the workers collect its leaves, they are selected, fried, packaged, and ready for sale.
