Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family."Mum and dad made all our furniture. Not
because we couldn't afford it:they just preferred making things to buying it.So visits to city
fumiture shops nearby just weren't part of my childhood."When Daniella visited a design exhibition
with her class at the age of ten,she realized she wanted to follow her parents'example.Since that
day, she's been making furniture."T've learnt by giving mum and dad a hand, and through watching
videos on the Internet."
Her trst piece was a table, made soon after visiting the exhibition, and similar to one she'd seen
there."They had fumiture from the last hundred years,and I copied a 1920s design,"said Daniella.
"Unfortunately,no one has wanted tables like that for years.I was pleased with the quality of my
table,though."
Daniella started selling her furniture at a local market."I spend most of my free time inside so
this gave me the chance to get some fresh air and find out what people thought about my designs."
Jadging by how many items Daniella sold, they thought it was pretty good."But at last,I had to give
up,"says Daniella."I'd also started an Interet business, which was doing so well it was taking up
every spare minute I had.The market closed down just after that anyway."
Recently,Daniella was asked to take part in a local design show."One of the organizers had
bought one of my pieces off the Interet.I couldn't believe it when she told me there'd be a
thousand visitors,"she comments.Rather than worrying about this,Daniella was excited by the
chance."had Little idea what visitors would think about it.My furniture is quite different from the
designers whose work I've seen in magazines-mine is more traditional."But Daniella received

Twelve years ago, oceanographer Captain Charlie Mooro was leading his yacht the Alguita in
the North Pacific. He sailed into a mass of floating plastic rubbish which took him a week to cross.
This floating rubbish is now called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch(太平禅垃圾带)and doubles the
size of the USA.
The United Nations says there are now 18,000 pieces of plastic in every square kilometre of sea
everywhere in the world.A walk along any beach will give you some idea of the seriousness of
plastic pollution.
The trouble is,when we throw out plastic with the waste, the plastic doesn't go away.Plastic
does not biodegrade. It photo degrades (into smaller and smaller particles which then
enter the food chain ()Plastics include cancer-causing chemicals which travel along the food
chain in increasing concentrations and end up in our fish and chips.Scientists try to tell us that we
are killing ourselves as well as other animals. Many species are being killed by plastic.Whales,
dolphins, turtles and albatross confuse floating plastic, especially shopping bags and six pack rings
(六环圆塑料包装),wi他jellyfish.A dead Minke whale,washed up on a Normandy beach,was
found to have eaten plastic bags from supermarkets and had died a dreadful death.
Some countries have rebelled and banned plastic bags. And the first was brave Bangladesh.
Then China took the same decision.Botswana,Canada,Israel,Kenya,Rwanda,Singapore and South
Africa have also banned plastic bags.Notice how many of the world's richest countries are not on
this list.It's an absolute shame!
If we can't use plastic bags, how do we carry home the shopping?Take a back pack or a folding
shopping trolley ()Change supermarket to one that provides biodegradable bags.Personally
speaking, what I need to find now,is a supermarket that solls biodegradable rubbish bags, otherwise
I still end up using plastic.I recently spent a week in New Zealand on and saw that everyone was
using special paper rubbish bags.I wish we did something similar hero.
Think globally, act locally.A small Australian town is now one step ahead of the rest of the
world.Local people of Bundanoon in New South Wales have banned plastic bottles from the town.
We need to follow their example and stop plastio from our lives, take care of the earth and vote for
people we think will do the same.
31.How can we get an idea of how much plastic rubbish there is in the oceans?
A.By looking at the sea.
B.By sailing across the Pacific.
C.By travelling across the world.
D.By taking a walk along any beach.
第5页共8页
32.How does the writer prove (that many species are being killed by plastic in Paragraph 3?
A.By telling storics.
B.By comparing facts.
C.By giving examples.
D.By listing nurabers.

A.Great Pacific Garbage Patch doubles the size of the USA.
B.Not many countrics have rebelled and banned plastic bags.

D.Plastics including cancer-causing chemicals can enter the food chain.

Jin Ying,25,is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).She took part in a three-month
training course on acupuncture and tuina(针灸推拿)in the winter of2023 at Beijing University of
Chinese Medicine.
Jin's life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five
Elements theory(五行学说).For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in winter
because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM.For her, learning
these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about embracing a new
lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested in TCM.A survey by
China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people who took part had tried
different TCM treatments.
"I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck pains, which are usually
related to the elderly. And more and more young people coming here also have pains in back,so they
come to me,"said Ma Huifang,a TCM doctor at Guoyitang,a TCM hospital affiliated wnth Beijing
University of Chinese Medicine.
Between Western medicine ard TCM,young people often choose TCM "due to its efficacy
),according to Ma.Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different
prescriptions ()"This is actually an advantage of TCM,rather than a shortcoming,as it can be
a more accurate (treatment for different patients,"Ma explained.
Younger age groups are embracing TCM,and,at the same time,TCM is also good for young
people. As Jin noted,"It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and leam why it is
believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture."
