A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. The meal was delicious, and my family and I were all excited.
The gift card covered almost all of the check (账单). After dinner, I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside my wallet. The first would just cover the rest of the check. The second would allow me to cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I planned to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant. I had to work long hours of hard work for low pay at that time. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness on their faces at the end of each month. I blinked (眨眼睛) to hide my sadness and smiled at the waitress, pushing the smaller bill back down. Then I picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and happiness.
We are family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

On a Sunday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into his hat.
The next day, the young artist came to the same place and played the violin again. He laid a small board beside his hat. Soon people were attracted (吸引) by the words on it. It said, “Last night, a gentleman with the name of ‘Jack’ put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to get it soon.”
After an hour, a man rushed through the crowd to the artist and said, “Yes, it’s you. I knew you were honest and would certainly come here.” The artist asked politely, “Are you Jack?” The man nodded. “Did you lose anything?” “Yes. It’s a lottery ticket (彩票),” said the man. The artist took out a lottery ticket with Jack’s name on it and returned it to the man.
Later his classmate asked the artist, “You are a student and you need money to pay the tuition for further study in the college. Why don’t you keep the lottery ticket to yourself?” The artist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty, I won’t be happy forever.”

The hum of millions of locusts on the move is broken by the screams of farmers and the clanging (哇嘟声) of pots and pans. But their noise-making does little to stop the greedy insects from feasting on their crops.
Since the beginning of 2020, the East African country of Kenya has been fighting against the nation’s worst desert locust outbreak in over 70 years. The destructive (破坏性的) swarms, some as big as three times the size of New York City — about 192 billion insects — are eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal farms.
“These things are terrible,” says Keith Cressman, an official with the UN Food and American Organization (FAO).“A swarm the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined.”
Experts say the locusts are easy to control with pesticides. However, due to a delay of action and a lack of resources to battle such large numbers, the locust invasion (入侵) is still out of control. If efforts are not made in time to control the bugs, they could have grown to be 20 times their current number by March. That is the start of the planting season in Kenya. Even worse, experts believe that if control efforts fail, yet another generation of locusts, which bave a lifespan of between three to five months, could appear just in time for the September harvest season.
“Although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers and huge vacuums have been suggested in the past, these are not of use for locust control,”the FAO says.“People and birds often eat locusts. But that’s not enough to largely reduce the bug’s population levels.”
11.What are the farmers most probably doing with their pots and pans (in paragraph 1)?
A.They are driving the locusts away.
B.They are cooking meals.
C.They are making music.
D.They are holding a ceremony for a good harvest.
12.What does the example Keith Cressman used (in paragraph 3) show?
A.Locusts grow in number very quickly.
B.Manhattan is faced with a locust outbreak as well.
C.Large numbers of locusts are destructive to food resources.
D.People in New York and California have been eating too much food.
13.Which of the following statements are true?
①Locusts can’t be killed by pesticides.
②Locusts can live for three to five months.
③Kenya’s planting season starts in September.
④The later people start to control the locusts, the worse the situation will be.
A.①② B.①③ C.③④ D.②④
14.According to the article, why is the locust invasion still out of control?
①Because there have been too many locusts.
②Because the locust swarms move too quickly.
③Because Africans don’t know how to kill locusts.
④Because measures were not taken in time to deal with the locusts.
A.①② B.①④ C.②③ D.③④
15.What can we know about the FAO by looking at the end of the article?
A.It is encouraging more people to eat locusts.
B.It thinks locusts can be a main food source for people.
C.It has found an effective solution to the problem of the locust invasion.
D.It has been unable to work out a method to control the locusts up till now.

Most of us have tooth problems from time to time, but only few of us go to the dentist. Lots of us find it a little bit horrible, but we have to understand that a dentist is someone who wants to help us by making sure that we have healthy teeth and gums (牙床).
A dentist’s job is to give us advice about how to take good care of our teeth and gums. They also tell us about making healthy choices about our eating habits. This is because the choices we make about our food every day can make a big difference to our teeth. Having healthy teeth is an important part of having a healthy body, so dentists encourage us to have cleaning and check-ups for our teeth from time to time. Dentists also do things like filling teeth, removing teeth, polishing teeth and so on. Sometimes they have to take X rays to look at our teeth and gums to find out what the problem is.
There are different kinds of dentists. For example, an orthodontist (正形医师) fits braves (牙箍) that help people to straighten teeth, and a paediatric (儿科的) dentist looks after children’s teeth.
Would you like to be a dentist when you grow up? Here are some skills needed.
● ▲ Dentists can not be impatient during their work. They have to take their time.

A.lovely B.scary C.expected D.boring
17.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.What a dentist’s job is. B.How important our eating habits are.
C.When dentists take X-rays for our teeth. D.Why we should check up our teeth often.
18.How does the writer show that there are different kinds of dentists?
A.By telling stories. B.By giving examples.
C.By raising questions. D.By explaining reasons.
19.Which of the following can we put “ ▲ ” in the text?
A.Be patient. B.Be humorous. C.Be friendly. D.Be hard-working.
20.The text is written to ________.
A.introduce us a job B.advise us to study hard
C.ask us to take good care of our teeth D.show us the importance of good teeth

You may feel that math is hard and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? With International Day of Mathematics coming on March 14, Teens interviewed Li Xing, a math professor at Ning Xia University. We asked if math can be beautiful and fun. Here’s what Li said.
Numbers are beautiful
Many people today want to have beautiful looks. But there is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure the length from your head to your belly button (肚脐眼) and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote, “I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day”, “My skiff has left ten thousand mountains far away”. “A thousand miles in one day”, “ten thousand mountains”—all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt. Numbers give us the freedom to imagine.
Curves are beautiful
Sine curves (正弦曲线) are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. The tangent curve (正切曲线) is like a waterfall. That’s really “dashing down three thousand feet from on high”. If you do a math problem and get that curve, you’ll feel terrific!
You may have not learned Euler’s formula: eiπ+1=0. It’s beautiful too. The number “e” is an irrational number (无理数). Its digits (位数) go on forever without repeating. “π” is also such an irrational number. However, when these two numbers come together, they can turn into a natural number!
根据语篇内容,选择最佳选项。
21.What happens if the ratio of a thing is around 0.618?
A.It will look like a human body.
B.It’s as long as a man’s belly button.
C.It may bring people a sense of beauty.
22.Why did Li Bai write the number in his poem?
A.Because he was good at math problems.
B.Because he wanted to use numbers to show his feelings.
C.Because he liked to imagine his travelling through numbers.
23.What does a tangent curve look like?
A. B. C.
24.Which of the following can be put in ________ in the passage
A.Formulas are beautiful
B.”π” is lucky
C.Repeating the numbers
25.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.What International Day of Maths is.
B.Why maths is beautiful and fun.
C.How maths helps us live better.

Hangzhou, together with five other cities in Zhejiang, hosts the 19th Asian Games. The Games are “smart” with the use of many exciting technologies. Let’s have a look!
The stadium (场馆) for the tennis finals of the Hangzhou Asian Games is nicknamed “Small Lotus”. On the top of the stadium, there are eight “petals” (花瓣). Each petal weighs 160 tons. They can open and close freely. It takes 15 minutes for each petal to open and close. When the roof is opening, it looks like a lotus blooming when looking down from the air. It’s built this way for different kinds of weather.
What if there’s an accident during the game and the athletes need first aid ? Drones (无人机) can be used to send things over. They can fly as far as 20 kilometers and travel 16 meters in one second. Using a drone saves about 60 percent of the time, according to the drone maker Antwork. Medicine, blood and other things needed for first aid can be sent to people quickly.
Every dish at the Asian Games should be safe and healthy to eat. In the kitchen of the athletes village in Hangzhou, there is a special system that can tell people’s faces. If a “stranger” goes into the kitchen, an alarm will go off to let people know. The managers of the kitchen will also get messages on their phones. There’s also a system to keep an eye on the temperature of refrigerator.
Want to walk around at the stadiums but can’t make it in person? You can try the Hangzhou Asian Games’ metaverse (元宇宙)! There’s a mini-program on Alipay inside, it’s like an online cartoon world. You can see the stadiums both from the outside and inside. Also, you can have your own character in the metaverse. You can choose clothes for your character who is able to “run” around the stadiums and even talk with other online users.
Suppose that you are in Hangzhou and going to watch one of the events. It will be sad if you can’t find your way. Augmented reality (AR,增强现实) is here to help. There’s a mini-program called the Hangzhou Asian Games AR service. You simply turn on your phone’s camera and it will see where you are and then show you the way. You can also get more information about the stadiums as you walk by.

When you are too sick or tired to eat, would you enjoy a bowl of ramen? It wouldn’t matter how good the ramen is any more—you wouldn’t enjoy it anyway.
If the boss decides to give you another bowl of the world’s best ramen and lets you invite someone to eat for free. But you do not have any loved ones to invite—not even a close friend. Your feelings of loneliness will make the ramen tasteless as well.
Ramen is like the expensive things that many of us think we want in life. Nice cars, expensive houses and beautiful clothes. They are nice to have, but we shouldn’t forget that the most important things in life are our health and our loved ones. We must first take good care of our health and our loved ones before we worry about having nice things.
Being rich is not always about having more money; it can also come from the heart. Having a rich heart is about finding inner (内心的) peace. Once you have made it, you will be thankful for what you have and be less worried about what you don’t have. Or all the riches in the world will not be able to fill your heart.
The next time you are enjoying a bowl of delicious ramen with a loved one or a close friend, think about how lucky you are. When life brings you difficult problems and challenges, remember that these same people are there for you to help you get past difficult times.
31.According to Paragraph 1&2, we can know that ________.
A.health and loved ones are important
B.no one can have a bowl of free ramen
C.eating ramen makes you feel less lonely
D.having ramen with lots of friends is tiring
32.What does the word “ramen” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Close friends. B.Difficult times. C.Kind hearts. D.Expensive things.
33.According to the passage, if you find your inner peace, you may ________.
A.feel a lot more lonely than ever before
B.decide to have another bowl of ramen
C.be pleased about what you’ve already got
D.start to worry about what you don’t have
34.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Enjoy Difficult Times
B.Share Expensive Things
C.Make the Best Ramen
D.Find Real Riches in Life

Here are different opinions from different people on China’s changes.
China, like India, was a developing country and day-to-day life always told us that things were in short supply in1977.
China has lifted 740 million people out of poverty (贫困) in the last four decades (十年). It has become better and better.
—An Indian friend
“It’s much easier to travel to foreign countries now, and it’s not very expensive.”
“When we were young, we wanted to travel to many places, but we failed to do so for many reasons” said a retired (退休的) Chinese man Mr. Qu.
What has changed is that I did not have to attend after-school classes. At primary school, I had lots of homework. Also, when I was in middle school, I had to get up at 6 a.m. and didn’t get home until 9 p.m, but I had time to play sports with my friend, watch TV and read my favorite books and so on.
Now, each parent wants their child to receive a better education, and with more parents sending their children to after-school classes, a strange, tiring and endless competition has appeared. So it is a great luxury for children to have their own time to relax and do sports.

A family dinner is an important tradition to celebrate Spring Festival. Now some people choose to have the dinner in a restaurant, but not everyone is keep on this idea. Should we make a change? Here are ideas of two readers.
Dear Editor (编辑),
We have eaten out for the Spring Festival family dinner for the last three years, and we have enjoyed it a lot. I don’t understand why some people don’t want to change.
Preparing for the dinner and cleaning up the mess are hard work and take a long time. Some people don’t like doing these things. We work all year, so why can’t we have one day to relax?
In my opinion, what or where we eat on Spring Festival Eve really doesn’t matter. Although we choose to eat out, the love between the family members remains the same.
Wang Peng, software engineer
Dear Editor,
For this year’s Spring Festival family dinner, my son suggested going to a restaurant, but I’m a bit unhappy about it. When I was little, all of us sat around the table happily. The simple, homemade dishes tasted more delicious than anything cooked by a top cook.

Chongqing is not alone. Many other cities around the world have been experiencing this same problem for some time now. Some people are worried about this. The elderly, they say, do very little for the nation’s economy (经济). The government, however, has to give them lots of retirement benefits (退休福利). But a recent survey shows that many people agree there are some advantages of having an aging population.
With an aging population, younger people will have more chances to meet seniors in their daily lives. Through usual communication, the elderly can bring a wealth of useful life lessons to younger people. The young, at the same time, are given chances to see things differently.
Besides, in many cultures, it’s normal for elderly parents to live with their children under the same roof. Their children may have already reached adulthood, but these gray-haired men and women continue to play an important role in their development. In some families, the elderly are taking care of their grandchildren. It’s reported that half of all the children in China’s cities live with their grandparents and are raised under their guidance. Thanks to the free childcare, working parents can contribute to the economy more.
An aging population is often considered to be a headache. But perhaps it can be argued that there are also some benefits to it.

Dear Editor (编辑),

You probably have noticed it: Chongqing’s population has been aging fast. According to China’s latest national census (人口普查), up to 23.4 percent of the city’s residents (居民) are aged over 60. This number is expected to grow even further in the coming years.

Restaurants in Europe, America and Japan are trying to let people order their food directly from a screen at their tables instead of a waiter writing down their choices. We call that e-menu. In this way, the restaurants can not only save money but attract more younger people. All kinds of the photos of food such as steaks (牛排) and desserts (甜点) attract people to order more.
“It’s about impulse-buying,” said Adi Chitayat, Conceptic’s CEO. “If a person starts looking at pictures of chocolate cake, it means he wants it.” Frame, a restaurant in Tel Aviv with the system, he also said “The e-menu has helped us to make more money.” People often call ahead to order seats with screens, manager Natalie Edry told Reporters.
At one of the e-menu tables, IT worker Gil Uriel and his family are looking at the photos of the dishes. They felt interested and excited to make a decision on the screen. “It’s more visual (直观).” says Uriel, as his children could have their own choices and they order more food when looking at the photos. “We can still choose, we can still argue—but it’s much easier and interesting when we can all see it.”
